I am married to Glenn Robinson, son of the Clarence Robinson that you mention and Grandson of Luther Carder Robinson. The best I can tell Mary Carder Robinson was the sister of Luther Carder's mother (can't remember her name right now). Luther's adoption was informal and he took the name Robinson later.

Hello, I am the granddaughter of Nancy Robinson Davis. She did indeed marry John W. Davis and had three sons, Thomas F., Robert W., and Harry H. and one daughter Matilda Elizabeth who was my mother. Mom died in 2007 at the age of 92. She had a wonderful memory and told us many stories. I remember my grandmother very well and I remember visiting her relatives in Cumberland, MD., her sister Margaret's fammily and her brother Ike's family. Would love to share information. I have also contacted her brother Clarence's son, received information from his wife today.

Hi John,
I would be particularly interested in details of any Carder families from 1750 to 1800, and where they came from if possible.

There are two main branches of the Carder family by 1800, in north Essex and south Essex/London, and I'm trying to tie in these families. Ultimately I believe all the Carder's in these areas originated from Wethersfield in north Essex.

Any help you can give would be appreciated and I will then try to link in your family with the other branches.
Paul

Carder Family From Wethersfield, Connecticut from 1600 to 1680 or Richard CARDER

This is an appeal to our American cousins. I am looking for any connection between the Carder family an the town of Wethersfield in Connecticut. I believe the early settlers included Richard Carder (b.c1615 in Essex, England) who probably came from Wethersfield in Essex, England.

Certainly from 1600 to 1650 the only known population of Carder's in Essex was in the Wethersfield area. It is probable that people from the village, including some Carder's, emigrated to the New World and founded the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut.

My branch of the Carder family comes from south Cambridgeshire, England, (only a few miles from Wethersfield) and I can trace this lineage back to 1596. Prior to that, from research into wills & land deeds, I am 95% certain, that my family also originated in Wethersfield.
The only problem is that the early Wethersfield Parish Registers have been lost and official records only begin there in 1650. But through the wills etc I have what I think is a fairly accurate but incomplete Carder family tree from Thomas Carder who was born c.1490 up to the ealy 1600's. But there is then a gap until 1650!

If anybody can add any information to this theory or thinks otherwise I would be delighted to hear from them.

Best wishes,
Paul

Nelson Edwin Carder and Ella Hill

Hi Judy;

I'm glad I saw your post!

Nelson Carder was my great-grandfather - although it's just coincidence that my last name is also Nelson. Nelson and Ella adopted my grandmother Rheta. She says that Nelson's father was Henry and was born in England.

This is where things get confusing, though, and any help you can give me to sort it out is much appreciated. There were two Henry Carders mentioned in the Leamington Post on November 11, 1915:
DEATHS.
Carder. - In Gosfield North, October 29th, Henry Carder, aged 95 years.
DIED.
Carder - At Albuna on Friday, November 5th, Henry Carder, aged 94. The funeral was held at Albuna church, Sunday.

However, the only matching Carder I can find in the 1871 census is Henery Carder, age 39, which makes him too young to be either of these men.

If you search the Rootsweb family trees for a Henry Carder born in 1820, you'll find two listings for a Henry Carder born in Ickleton, Cambridgeshire, England. I'm tempted to think this is the same person as our Henry Carder, but don't really know how to go about verifying it.

I guess visiting the Albuna Cemetery to check out the gravesite, and trying to find his death certificate at the Provincial archives, will be my next steps.

Kirsten

A helpful gentleman on this board confirmed that Henry Carder is not buried in Albuna Cemetery as reporting in the Leamington Post notice of his death.

Then, I was at the Archives of Ontario on Saturday, looking up Henry Carder's death registration. There was no information filled in on father's and mother's names, date and of birth, unfortunately.

So I am no futher ahead on Henry Carder!

Kirsten

Henry Carder - Ickleton, CAM, ENG to Essex Co, ON, CAN?

I was at the Provincial Archives in Toronto today, looking for clues on my ancestor Henry Carder. I managed to find his death registration today, but I was disappointed to see lines drawn through "date of birth", "age at death", "father's name", "father's place of birth", "mother's name", and "mother's place of birth". Isn't it a find when those pieces of information are all there???

In any case, the only useful information was that he was born in England, which family stories said was the case already. I haven't found him in any census yet, but I know from his death notice in the Leamington Post that he died in 1915 at 94 years of age.

Several family trees on the WorldConnect pages list a Henry Carder born in 1820 in Ickleton, Cambridge. I don't think I can assume they're the same person based on the date of birth being about what it should be. Can anyone give me advice on how to figure out if these two men are the same?

Kirsten Nelson

Re: Carder

Hello,
The Carder's are my mother's branch of the family for which I have the family line back to around 1450, but I don't think I can help your query.

Around 1500 there were two distinct branches of the Carder family in England. My branch are from the East, primarily from Wethersfield in north Essex and, from 1596 onwards, also found in south Cambridgeshire, mainly around the village of Ickleton. This branch I have fully explored as far as the medieval records will allow.

The other branch of the Carder family came from the south-west, from Devon and Somerset, and they seem to have originated from the Okehampton area but I have not done any further investigation. It is possible that the two families were linked at an earlier time, say before 1550 when most of the local records began. On the other hand, the name Carder is a professional name - one who cards wool (carding with boards to prepare wool for spinning) - so there may be no connection.

I probably haven't helped you much but if you find any link to the east of England in your researches please let me know.
Best regards,
Paul
I am currently trying to tie in all branches of the Carder family in Essex.

Does your family have any connection to Essex in particular the village of Wethersfield or even Ickleton in Cambridgeshire where my side of the family comes from?

I would of course be pleased to share any info I can. I look forward to hearing from you.
Paul
