Cardoza, H. in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Cardoza, H.

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching. I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Do you know anything else?

Pablo

Its reported that the last name Cardoza originated some where in Spain, also take note, my great grand parents are so far the oldest Cardoza I can find that came to the US from Spain via Mexico.
Elizabeth

Thank you for replying!

The John Cardozo/Cardoza in my family was a mason according to the 1900 census. It also states that he came to the States in 1870 from England. His first born son was also named John with the middle initial of I. It is possible that John Sr.'s middle initial was also I as his son Arthur (my ggrandfather) listed his father as John I. Cardoza on his SS# application.

Is it true that all the Cardoza/Cardozos originate from the Azores? Were they predominately Jewish?

John CARDOZA, Modesto, CA --- naturalization

I recently sent for the Alien registration and/or Naturalization papers for my husband's grandfather, John Cardoza, under the FOIA. I finally received the info but it is for the wrong John Cardoza!! This John lived in Modesto, Stanislaus County, CA and was born in Sao Jorge in 1895. I have an index card, his Declaration of Intent, his Petition for Naturalization, and his Naturalization Certificate. I returned the copies I received, but scanned then into my computer first so I could pass them along to a descendant of this John Cardoza. If that is you, I'd be happy to send them along. They give a wealth of information including his village of birth, that of his wife, his port of entry and ship as well as date of immigration, and his photo. It's a lot of great information!! Wish it was mine! :)
My great-great grandfather lived in Hackney in around 1877?his name was Joeseph Nunes Cardoza sometimes called Cardozo, Nunes was a name passed down through the family. I know he originated from Portugal. He went on to marry a Scottish lady my great -great grandmother who I think was called Mary. They had two girls that I know of and may have had other children, my great grandmother Florence Cardoza being one of them. They owned a fishmongers in hackney and had a market stool there. This is about as far back as I know if you could help me trace some more I would be greatful to anyone.
Thanks

I have recently completed a fairly exhaustive one-name type of study of the Cardoza & Cardozo births, marriages & deaths in England from 1837 through 2001. As well, I have accessed the published records of the "Spanish & Portuguese Jews Synagogue of London" (known as the Bevis-Marks Synagogue) at the Society of Genealogists for the same surnames.

I have discovered that quite a few men who were named something else used the name "John" for government record-keeping type purposes. Of course, this makes identifying the right "John Cardozo" (or Cardoza) born about 1851 rather challenging :-)

Do you know anything else about him - his occupation, for example. I have found that certain occupations seemed to run in these families & this might help.

By the way, the use of the final "o" or "a" is inconsistent even within family groups.

Looking for info on my g-grandfather Arthur Cardoza/Cardozo. His parents are listed as John and Ella Cardozo (with the O)on the 1880 census but he is Arthur Cardoza (with the A) on the 1910 census. My grandmother used the A ending but it seems that Arthur's siblings- John b. apx 1879, Lester b. apx 1883, William b. apx 1884 and Eva b. apx 1877 all used the O at the ending???
Does anyone have info on these Cardoza/Cardozos?? They were in Oyster Bay- Long Island, NY in the 1880's-1910's. Ella was listed as born in NY apx. 1858 and John listed as born in England apx. 1851.

Do you know anything else about your Olive Cardoza? The Cardozo family I am tracking, (some switched to Cardoza when they got to the US) had a sister Olivia that seems to have vanished. The letters I have from the brothers and sisters (back and forth) often mention "Little Olivia" and how no one has heard from her. We are not sure if little Olivia refers to a daughter of Olivia Cardozo or not. If it does, what we can gather so far is that she was to be sent to a relative to raise, for one reason or another, in Ca. Lost track of her at that point.
I was under the impression that she was in Portugal as a child though.
Maybe we can solve both puzzles in one shot.

My email is dragonfly1of2@comcast.net

Michael goularte
