My line of Carews goes back to Devon, England, but there are nine generations born on this continent. For several generations, the eldest son was named George. Recorded family history begins with "Jack Carew, Handsome Jack, pressed aboard an English Brig of War, Aug 1746. Captured by a Frech Corvette, a month later sent a prisoner to Bordeaux, France, Exchanged at the end of the WAr. Returned at the end of the War to Witless Bay, NF. Married, had sons Jack, Tom, David, George. Tom Married, had sons, George, Martin, Richard. George Married, had sons Martin, Laurence, Thomas. Martin married, had sons George and Wilfred, daughters Lillian and Mary Agnes. Handsome Jack's father was John Carey. Martin emigrated to the US about 1890. The last George Carew, son of George, died in 1970 in Virginia.
