I would like to provide this summary of our Carey/Cary y-DNA Surname Project. The project home page is http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/carey
We currently have 77 members in the project from haplogroups E, G, I, R1a and R1b. Most members are from haplogroup R1b.
Many members do not have DNA matches within the project at this time so we are unable to assign them to lineages. However, we have been able to identify 8 lineages from matches within the project.
Haplogroup R1a – Lineage I. We have three project members who are in this lineage. One member has identified an earliest ancestor born in Delaware in the early 1800s and provided a pedigree which is on our Patriarchs page. Another has identified an earliest ancestor who does not have the Carey surname.
Haplogroup R1b - Lineage I. We have six project members who are from this lineage which gives us the beginnings of a pretty good modal for this lineage. Most have identified that their earliest ancestor was Thomas Cary who emigrated from England to the United States in the 1660s, living first in Virginia and then Maryland. Based on the pedigree information they provided we have a posted a combined pedigree that links most of them on our Patriarchs page. Comparative analysis of the haplotypes for these members supports the pedigree.
Haplogroup R1b – Lineage II. We have five project members in this lineage with different earliest known ancestors. None have provided pedigrees.
Haplogroup R1b – Lineage III. We have three project members in this lineage. All of them have identified a connection to the Bahamas. Two have indicated that their earliest known ancestor was a William Carey born in the Bahamas circa 1840. They have not provided pedigrees at this time.
Haplogroup R1b - Lineage IV. We have three project members in this lineage. Two have indicated their earliest ancestor was Jonathon Cary born circa 1711 in Maryland.
Haplogroup R1b – Lineage VI. We have two project members in this lineage. One has provided a pedigree with an earliest ancestor John Cary born in Bristol, England, circa 1610 who immigrated to Massachusetts in the early-1600s. The other has an earliest known ancestor born in New York circa 1808. Comparative analysis of the haplotype for these two members suggests that their earliest most recent common ancestor lived before John Cary emigrated from England.
Haplogroup R1b – Lineage VII. We have three members in this lineage but one does not have the surname Carey. Although all three have different earliest known ancestors, all have a connection to Ireland. Two have provided pedigrees. Comparative analysis of the haplotype for these two members suggests that their earliest most recent common ancestor lived about 8-10 generations ago.
Haplogroup R1b – Lineage VIII. We have two members in this lineage. Both have provided pedigrees indicating that their earliest known ancestor was a John Cary from Buckinghamshire, England. A combined pedigree is posted on our Patriarchs page.
