My name is Keith Carfrae and I reside in Canberra Aust. I read the info on e-mail and thought that the following may be of interest. Thomas married Elizabeth Younger 1745, son Thomas jnr married Janet Freeland 1766 - children Bertha, James b.1772,William and John, James married Elizabeth Peebles 1796 and with their 11 children migrated to Australia in 1857. My line- from Thomas jnr, son John who married Elizabeth Tennant to John jnr who married Agnes Swinton and with 12 children migrated to Australia in 1841. One of those children was my great grandfather a twin Bland. I have otheer info so should you requir same let me know regards Keithe

That is all we have on Margaret Carfrae,she was born in london,she may have been married before she married Thomas as we have her name on my granddad's birth certificate it says formaly Lindsey. Many thanks for replying to me

Yes, it has been a while but I am glad to hear from you. It is amazing that with such a unique surname, that more inquiries haven't been received. The posting on GenForum for the Carfrae bulletin board hasn't had a posting in many months.
I do not know if a DNA project has been started for this surname group, but you might contact Family Tree DNA so get the latest news.

[I am resending this reply which appears not to have got through yesterday - I attached a couple of files which may have been too big]

I think that we have the same James. As coincidence would have it, I discovered some of James & Janet's other children (including my Elizabeth) shortly after I posted my original message. Elsewhere on the "Carfrae" pages someone noted that an alternative spelling was "Cathfrae" - in fact I found them under "Cathrae" - there are also Carfraes who appear to be listed as "Carfree" too .

Details from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk are as follows:-
13/03/1774 CATHRAE ALEXANDER, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK; 03/12/1769 CATHRAE CATHARIN, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, LEITH SOUTH; 30/07/1780 CATHRAE ELIZABETH, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, CHILD 9, BARONY;
19/04/1778 CATHRAE ROBERT, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, CHILD 8, BARONY;

The files I was trying to post are the marriage entries for James Carfrae/Janet Carfrae 1 Sep 1769 and William George/Elizabeth Carfrae 17 Oct 1798. I will try and post them again separately but I may need to email these to you direct as they didn't post to this site last time. Kind regards

Interesting info. I am collecting as much Carfrae genealogy data as I can but I have little to add except for one nugget that makes me suspect you're right in your supposition about Elizabeth's parentage. It is this: Richard Torrence, of Edinburgh, Scotland, told me in 2003 (without disclosing his source) that this James Carfrae was a nailor or nail-maker.

He also gave me a list of offspring but Elizabeth wasn't one of them. That said, he opined that no doubt there were other children who were still born, died before they were baptized or did not make it into the Parish Registers.

I suppose we cannot assume there was no other James Carfrae, nailor, at that time and district but it strikes me as a pretty good bet. If you have a copy of the parish register for the marriage, I'd very much like to have a copy.

I can't help with the parents of Janet and James but I have an ancestor, Elizabeth Carfrae who married William George in Leith on 17 October 1798. The marriage entry in the parish register describes her as "Residenter Leith and Daughter of the deceased James Carfrae, Nailer"

I have not been able to find a record of her birth but have identified James Carfrae/Janet Carfrae as the most likely parents based on the assumption that Elizabeth was born between Hugh in 1771 and John in 1783 but that her birth was not recorded.

Do you have any additional details which would confirm whether my assumption is correct? If I am correct then I would be ineterested to hear if you have had any success in the intervening period in finding James and Janet's parents. Needless to say, I can give you information on Elizabeth's descendants if these would be of interest.

I have just been looking at my family tree and came across a wedding between Mary Carfrae and David Murchie on the 24 Sept 1926 in the Grand Hotel, Glasgow, Scotland.

Marys' mother was called Mary Howie and her father was called Thomas Carfrae, if anyone has any info on the Carfraes that i have mention please get intouch.
