Yes, it has been a while but I am glad to hear from you. My e-mail address is RussellLawOffice(symbol for at)bellsouth.net or RussellRobertT(symbol for at)gmail.com (These messages are said to be scanned for addresses by spammers, hence the variation.) It is amazing that with such a unique surname, that more inquiries haven't been received. The posting on GenForum for the Carfrae bulletin board hasn't had a posting in many months.
I do not know if a DNA project has been started for this surname group, but you might contact Family Tree DNA so get the latest news.
Look forward to hearing further from you.
Hi Neil

[I am resending this reply which appears not to have got through yesterday - I attached a couple of files which may have been too big]

I think that we have the same James. As coincidence would have it, I discovered some of James & Janet's other children (including my Elizabeth) shortly after I posted my original message. Elsewhere on the "Carfrae" pages someone noted that an alternative spelling was "Cathfrae" - in fact I found them under "Cathrae" - there are also Carfraes who appear to be listed as "Carfree" too .

Details from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk are as follows:-
13/03/1774 CATHRAE ALEXANDER, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK; 03/12/1769 CATHRAE CATHARIN, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, LEITH SOUTH; 30/07/1780 CATHRAE ELIZABETH, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, CHILD 9, BARONY;
19/04/1778 CATHRAE ROBERT, JAMES CATHRAE/JANET CATHRAE, CHILD 8, BARONY;

The files I was trying to post are the marriage entries for James Carfrae/Janet Carfrae 1 Sep 1769 and William George/Elizabeth Carfrae 17 Oct 1798. I will try and post them again separately but I may need to email these to you direct as they didn't post to this site last time. Kind regards

Andy
Andy,

Interesting info. I am collecting as much Carfrae genealogy data as I can but I have little to add except for one nugget that makes me suspect you're right in your supposition about Elizabeth's parentage. It is this: Richard Torrence, of Edinburgh, Scotland, told me in 2003 (without disclosing his source) that this James Carfrae was a nailor or nail-maker.

He also gave me a list of offspring but Elizabeth wasn't one of them. That said, he opined that no doubt there were other children who were still born, died before they were baptized or did not make it into the Parish Registers.

I suppose we cannot assume there was no other James Carfrae, nailor, at that time and district but it strikes me as a pretty good bet. If you have a copy of the parish register for the marriage, I'd very much like to have a copy.

Regards,

Neil Carfra

I can't help with the parents of Janet and James but I have an ancestor, Elizabeth Carfrae who married William George in Leith on 17 October 1798. The marriage entry in the parish register describes her as "Residenter Leith and Daughter of the deceased James Carfrae, Nailer"

I have not been able to find a record of her birth but have identified James Carfrae/Janet Carfrae as the most likely parents based on the assumption that Elizabeth was born between Hugh in 1771 and John in 1783 but that her birth was not recorded.

Do you have any additional details which would confirm whether my assumption is correct? If I am correct then I would be ineterested to hear if you have had any success in the intervening period in finding James and Janet's parents. Needless to say, I can give you information on Elizabeth's descendants if these would be of interest.
Many thanks for your help. Andy Turner

Please share with me the Canadian locality in which your Carfrae anestors settled so we can first determine the likelihood of the same people being involved. I get the impression that my Carfraes were in South Leith, having strayed from Est Lothian where they had lived for quite some time. The East Lothian Carfraes are said to have descended from the Sinclairs of Rossyln. Look forward to hearing form you. R. Russell

A "World Carfrae" tree has been privately created by Neil Carfra (variant spelling of Carfrae) which includes all of my data. I looked at the tree briefly and do not find either George Carfrae or his bride Margaret Taylor. So please give me as much of the b-m-d information as you have, and their antecedents on either side so that I might see if I can relate it to the Carfrae tree or insert the information into the tree as related or isolated awaiting a relationship tie. Please contact me directly by email. Robert Russell

There are two branches to "my" Carfraes. The one I'm related to most closely left Leith in or around 1907 and settled in what is now just north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The other line is more of a puzzle for me. I do not know when they left Leith (it was also around 1907 and they may have all come together - these two lines had same father (John Carfra) but different mothers. I am a descendant of the second mother, Ann Watt) but by WW 1, they were in British Columbia. At least one of the sons enlisted from there into the Canadian Expeditionary Force and went to fight in Europe.

Do you think there are any connections?

Neil

I hope you're still out there, Donna. I was reviewing the postings here today and i see your response to me from way back in 2001. I don't recall ever seeing your response, hence my failure to answer you. I'm sorry about that.

I do have a possible connection for you: James CATHFRAE (an alternate spelling for Carfrae in those times), born December 13, 1784, in South Leith, Mid Lothian, Scotland. He is my 4th great-grandfather. His parents were William Cathfrae and Agnes Waters. In addition to James, they had William (September 27, 1782) and Peter (July 8, 1787).

James had at least seven children, William, James, David, Helen, Francis and two Agneses (the second replaced the first).

Does that give you any leads?

I'm sorry, but I do not have that info. But...I'd be very greatful if you'd share what Carfrae info you have and I will do the same for you. I am particularly interested in the line that emmigrated to Canada.

Perhaps we could share computerized files?

Cheers from Canada.

Aunt of Alfred Carfrae born in Scotland 1914 Alfred Carfrae's father was Librarian for Edinburgh University. Alfred Carae's parents died in Peckham London about 1928 when Alfred was just 14 years old.

Hope this helps.

Karen and I an Carfrae

Thanks for your answer Neil. Elizabeth's father and grandfather were born in England (Elizabeth was born in 1845, so I'd guess her grandfather would have been born some time around 1800). I have no info before him, so it is possible that his father was perhaps from Scotland. Do you have any info on a Carfrae with a son James born around that time, and who is "unaccounted for"? Or at least any suggestions on Carfrae men born around 1770-1780?

Hi Neil
I've searched all the boards for Carfrae and everyone seems to be Scottish. My Carfraes were English. (my gggrandmother Elizabeth Carfrae was born in Dover, Kent). Do you have any info on English Carfraes?

Have you seen Cal Carfrae's web site. www.carfraeclan.com/ ?
His ancestors came from Edinburgh in the 1800's. His site is generally good although he has one error. Montrave Villa is on Corstorphine road, near the centre of Edinburgh. Not as he has it pointed out on a map in Fife.
