The Carkeek lake to which you refer is probably the one in Washington State. There were several Morgan Carkeeks in our line and the one connected with Washington is Morgan Carkeek who came to California circa 1847 and moved on tho Seattle Washington and was a big business success. He is a cousin to the Stephen Carkeek who settled in N.Z., with his wife, Martha Piotti, as the first Customs Inspector. They stayed in N.Z. and had many children, some of whom married Maoris. I believe that all or most of the Carkeeks who settled in N.Z. are descendants of Stephen Carkeek b. 1818 Swansea, Wales. His father was another Morgan Carkeek b. 1778 married Mary Abbot and had four children in Swansea. Your Stephen 1818, Mary Elizabeth who died and is buried in Swansea, Morgan James b. 1815 (my great great grandfather), and Frances. When the father Morgan died, Stephen had his mother Mary and sister Frances brought to N. Z.. My Morgan went to sea and eventually, for at least the second time, married my g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth Hardy. They sailed from Tazmania, with Morgan as Master, on the Creole to Venezuela and then on to San Francisco where they had my g-grandfather Stephen Hardy Carkeek and two sisters. The children all stayed and so we are fifth, sixth and seventh generation Californians. Because of divorce and a tough life,or some mistake, my g-grandfather changed our spelling to Carkeet. So, our family is the closest in bloodline to most you you New Zealand Carkeeks. I believe that ours was the only seafaring line of Carkeeks. All were sea captains and our Morgan was a Master Mariner. He and his only brother must have lost touch. I would love to know if anyone over there has seen any records of our Morgan having been there.

I had discovered that Morgan married Elizabeth Hardy in Launceston, Tasmania in 1854. I knew that he was a mariner, but on the wedding license he is listed as a Master Mariner......Today I found that he and Elizabeth sailed from Launceston on 17 Aug. 1854 on the Creole bound for Valparaiso, Chile. He is listed as the Master. I know that they were expecting a child and she was born in Chile. Before the year was out they were in San Francisco, California. They had two more children in S.F and were divorced in 1859. Morgan disappeared from records there in 1860, but his family remained and his son, b. 1856, was my great grandfather, Stephen Hardy Carkeek. He changed the spelling to Carkeet before he married ca. 1880.

I have recently joined ancestry.ca and am researching part of what I believe is the same family. I have a narrative record which includes Rosanne Carkeek, and have her born in Ireland 16 Nov 1839 and died in Toronto Ontario 30 April 1928. Roseanne is my husbands great grandmother, her son Arthur Knowlton is his grandfather. I found John Carkeek and Charlotte Trelour as her parents listed on the record of her death. I have been looking at documents on ancestry.ca. Is your record of his birth date and place accurate? What is it that you would like to know that I might have? I can give you information going forward but not back any further than John and Charlotte. If I can find the link to the narrative about the Knowlton family, I could send you that. That is where I found Roseanne.

Hi Carol,
I would say that the majority of the Carkeeks are in Australia, New Zealand, Northwestern USA, Middlewestern USA. Most of the Carkeets (note spelling) are in Australia. My particular family line of Carkeeks is in New Zealand and here in California. My g-grandfather changed the spelling from a "k" to a "t" on the end. A large bunch of Carkeeks originated in Redruth, in Cornwall............Colleen Carkeet Bill

I am delighted to hear from you. Please e-mail me at CllnBill@aol.com.........I have quite a bit of general information about the family, but some gaps in Morgan's story. I have been waiting to hear from someone like you for a long time. I have communicated with Graham Carkeek of Wellington. He has material mostly about Stephen and his descendants. Our communications were sketchy, at best. My g-grandfather and grandfather were named after your g-grandfather. I would guess you and I are of the same generation......Regards, Colleen

hi! have just found the us cousins and am astoundeded at the number of carkeeks in not only America but the UK. In New Zealand, we are very rarely heard of and must repeat our name over and over. I still cannot believe that Carkeek Lake actually exists and only wish my late father had been aware of the many descendants of the english family and the extent of the miigaration or the carkeeks.
Lake carkeek sounds incredible AND HAD i KNOWN OF ITS EXISTANCE IN 1993 would have happily remained forever in the united states
