Carkhuff/Carkuff

Hi, I'm trying nail down my ancestry some little bit. Tough thing to do. I notice both Carkhuff's and Carkuff's coming out of the NJ and PA area. It looks like the names diverged somewhere around the time of a Mary Carkuff in the mid 1800's. I have to assume that Carkuff is just another variation on the original. I notice there are a fair number of Carkuff's out there and have managed to contact some lost relatives who seem convinced the name is Scotch-Irish in origin. I don't have a clue. Happy to hear from anyone about this. thanks, doug
