Carkhuff/Carkuff

Hi, I'm trying nail down my ancestry some little bit. Tough thing to do. I notice both Carkhuff's and Carkuff's coming out of the NJ and PA area. It looks like the names diverged somewhere around the time of a Mary Carkuff in the mid 1800's. I have to assume that Carkuff is just another variation on the original. I notice there are a fair number of Carkuff's out there and have managed to contact some lost relatives who seem convinced the name is Scotch-Irish in origin. I don't have a clue. Happy to hear from anyone about this. thanks, doug

Mary Carcuf

I am pulling my hair out over this woman. She is my 5g-grandmother and this line stops with her and her husband.

Census records say she was born about 1805 give or take a year. For a long time, they said she was born in NJ, then, at the end, born in PA (the same pattern followed with her children).

She married William Huffman, again saying he was born in NJ. They had four children: Jane, Louisa, Oliver and Roxanna. They moved to Wayne County, OH about 1840. William died in 1842. The family later moved to Porter County, IN.

Oliver's death index card had his parents listed as William Huffman and Mary Carcuf. That's it. That's all I know. Based on the spelling, pretty sure it's some form of Carkhuff/Kirkhoff etc.

Andreas Carkuff - Sussex Co. NJ

My files list an Andreas Carkuff (b. 5 Apr 1788, Knowlton Twp, Sussex Co. NJ) as part of the household of Philip Bellis/Bollesfelt (b. 23 May 1734 Niederbieber, GE) and Irma Margaretha (last name unknown). I don't have anymore info on Andreas and do not know why he is with the Bellis family, but throw this out in case anyone has anything on any Carkuff's up in Sussex Co., NJ. Philip moved up to Sussex Co. sometime around 1760 from Hunterdon Co. so I suspect Andreas is related somehow with the Carkuff's in Reading Twp.
