Hi Michael, I've got a family tree starting at Michael and Christina who had Christian Carle who married Sophia Wohlfarth.
Christian was born 1863 died in 1915.
I've also patched together bits of pieces of their children via census details here in the U.K.
I think Christian's brother was Frederick who is my great grandfather (I also have his family tree).
Frederick married a Margaret Wohlfarth who was cousin to Sophia. I've got a family tree of theirs too.
Our family all became Carters in the 1900's before Frederick took the kids to Australia.
I'm living in England though.
Love to hear from you and know what you have?

My email is suecarterdublin@yahoo.co.uk

Susan Carter
Hi Karen, I believe these are my ancestors too.
My great grandfather was Frederick Carle, and I believe his brother was Christian Carle. I have family tree's of both of their families. Bakers and butchers seem to have been the order of the day.
Their father I believe wa a Michael and Christina Carole from Ahringen? Wurttemburg.
I'd love to know more about your family tree.
regards
Susan Carter (Frederick Carle changed his family's name to Carter in London in the early 1900's before emigrating to Australia, although I have been living in the UK the last 10 years.
My email is suecarterdublin@yahoo.co.uk

Hi, Bertha Carle appears on a family tree I have.
My grandfather was a Carle (now all changed to Carter).
I believe Bertha was his cousin - a Streitberger family tree exists, and contains a photo of Bertha on it.
I believe looking at the tree that Christian is the brother of my great grandfather who is Frederick Carle ( I have a pretty good family tree of Frederick and his wife Margaret - who happens to be Sophie Wohlfart's cousin - who married Christian.
I'd love to know more of your tree?
regards
Susan Carter

Thomas Carle of Trucksville, PA, was married to Grace Lillian Hess who was my grandmother, Lyda's, sister. Lyda was married Charles Cecil Hartman. I remember that Thomas was a schoolmaster. I have met Homer and the other sons who were remarkably tall. I may have met you when we were children. Curtis Hartman was my father.

John, William T. Carle (1862-1864) and Frank S. Carle (1863-1864) were sons of William Holman Carle and Sarah (Thatcher) Carle. They died the same week, probably of some childhood epidemic illness.

Who were the four others who were moved from Southport Cemetery? I would love to know. Just finding out the name of Susan Ann Carle's husband has been a huge help to me. I have some Carle family records from an old Bible that contain more information about this family. I will send you a private message.

Thanks from another Susan Carle :)

You can reach me at mmgardener@gmail.com I think it might be easier than through Ancestry's web site.
Marilyn Hunrath Mathis

Rufus and Marge (Deering) Carle of Maine

I have no connection to this family but came across this story so am putting it on here for anyone who might find it of interest.

From "History of Camden and Rockport, Maine" by Reuel Robinson, p. 405:

“Capt. Rufus Carle died in 1871, at the age of 84. He came to Camden from Saco, Maine, about 1794 with his father, Joseph Carle, whose wife was Margre Deering, of Kennebunk. Their other children were Rhoda, who married Wm. Hilt, Stephen, died in Ohio, William, died at sea in West Indies, John, married Sally Wright, drowned in Sheepscot, James, married first, Elonia Wright, second, Hannah Wright, Nehemiah and Margre. Joseph died in 1839, aged 85, his wife in 1847, aged 92. Rufus Carle married Anna, daughter of Lieut. James Lawrence, Jr., who came from Pepperell, Mass., and married Sarah, daughter of James and Anna Simonton. Mr. Lawrence lived for a time in the Clay house, where the Methodist church now stands. Being a miller, he later had charge of the Molyneaux mill. In 1804, he bought of Charles Barrett the place now known as the Carle farm, which then included the farm adjoining (now owned by Wm. Brown), that place having soon been sold to his wife’s brother, John Simonton, and recently burned, it having stood upwards of 90 years and been occupied by twelve different families and about 58 people. There has been but one death there, that of Mr. Haskell, several years ago. Mr. Lawrence built a log house near the present Carle house, which was built by Rufus Carle in 1818. Mr. Lawrence was nearly 93 and his wife nearly 94 when they died. Rufus Carle followed the sea for awhile, then returned to his farm. His children were James L., Sarah L., Marcia, Mary A., Rufus, Sophia B., Betsy H. James Carle’s children were, by his first wife, John; by his second wife, Otis, Amos, Jonas, George.”
I am trying to trace Carley Lincoln Carle back to America. I know from UK census records that he was born in New York (don't know whether that is state of city) in 1866. On his marriage certificate he lists his father as a John Wersey Carle and records him being a solicitor. At some point Carley emigrated to the UK and marries Elizabeth Turland Frith in 1898. They had 4 children 3 of which survived to adulthood.

Terry,
My question for you actually relates to your Paulus relatives.
You pop up as matching info with mine in the trees.
What I know for fact:
Kathryn Paulus was born in 1855, maybe Alsaice Lorraine, maybe NY. Parents both die when she is a child. She comes to Buffalo, and is taken in by a family (I don't know their name). Her brother and sister are taken by other families and "go west". Got together with sister "Lena" sometime in early 1900's. No contact with brother. Only Katherine/Catherine is the one in NYC in 1860 with Micheal and Magdeline. I'm thinking sister Lena was shortened from Mom's name.I'm guessing one brother died from what ever killed parents. I have an immigration date for Michael of June, 1855, Kate born in Aug., so may be reason for confusion on birth location.
Does any of this make sense to you? I have Michael and Magdeline as the probable parents of Kate, but have no proof.
I appreciate the time,
Nancy Gavin Koester

I have a question concerning the marriage of Timothy Carle and Elizabeth Hall in 1705. Samuel (their son?) was married in 1708. I have read that Samuel's brother was also a Timothy. Isn't it more likely that Elizabeth Hall married Samuel's brother Timothy? Of course, that leaves the question as to who Samuel's mother was. Can you, or anyone, clarify this?

I replied last year to this posting but have heard nothing from that reply. I know that Columbia Carle was the son of Alexander (Carle) Carell of Venango County, PA. I am descended from Columbia's brother James. In my previous reply I erroneously stated that Columbia was on the 1870 census but he wasn't. Further research indicates that you were, in fact, absolutely correct. Columbia certainly appears to have died during the Civil War. In fact, I believe he died in Kentucky and is buried near Versailles. I have Alexander's will. In it Columbia (Actually Columbus) and James are identified as his sons. All of his daughters are also identified along with most of their children. Alexander died in 1844. I have been unable to trace this family back any further, probably because of the alternate spellings of the name. I would love to hear from any of his descendants.

Re: Justina M Dickinson Carle -AK WA-OR

Hello from Skagway Alaska! Justina shows up on the 1900 census as an orphan living in the Peniel Mission. The history of the Peniel Missions is interesting, apparently Victorine Tooley or Yorba and her daughter(?) Roberta Yorba were members of the Peniel Mission in Sacramento and decided to establish a mission in Skagway and when they moved up, brought both Justina and another orphan, Gusta Carnahan with them.
The Peniel Missions were dedicated to helping the "soiled doves" or prostitutes. There is no record of any of them after 1900, so they may have found better areas to take the Mission (once the gold rush was over, the population of men and consequently prostitutes dropped). I guess that means that Justina was an orphan in Sacramento so her parents must have died before 1899, and they were all from Sacramento. There is a short book in the National Park Service library here that is about the Peniel Missions.

Hello Terry.

I rec'd some notifications back in Oct. I exchanged some info with Betty Cheatham some years ago. Would be interesting to learn if there was a link between "your" Carle family and mine.

My grandfather was Thomas Carle, married to Grace Hess and lived in Trucksville, PA. I believe his father was IRA Carle and lived in the Scranton area. Grace's paternal fathers (not sure which one) fought in the Revolutionary War.

These are from my notes so I don't know how accurate some of it is: My Uncle Graydon told me > Arthur Hess, Grace's father returned to Benton, PA from Jameson, NY after Pearl Harbor in '42. He worked at McHenry's Distillery and a tannery in Jamison City which is 130 miles from Stillwater where Grace grew up (before the war). Jameson, NY and Jamison City sound a little too close to be accurate. He may be buried at St. Gabriel's, 12 miles from Stillwater. I've seen the ruins of the tannery and the schoolhouse where Grace attended.

But some of this doesn't sound right; Arthur Hess would have been pretty old by '42. I think I sent you a document about the Hess pioneers from Zweiburken, Germany. One was Conrad Hess who settled in Lucerne and Columbia counties around 1752.

Back to Carle: My grandfather's offspring were Graydon, Phillip, John, Lyle, and Homer (my father). There was a daughter, Audrey, who died, I believe in her late 20's or 30's from an ailment. Homer was born 9/1919.

I am most interested in the European origin of the Carle family. I did find a Scottish link sometime ago: John Carle who was convicted in the Supreme Court of Adelaide 5/20/1851 for forgery and sentenced to 7 years. He departed Port Adelaide on the vessel, Union 7/6/1851 for Hobart Town. I had thought that he was from Scotland but I'm not sure now. I think there is a Adelaide Scotland and an Adelaide, Australia. But my thought was IF he had come from Scotland and was sent to Hobart Town, NZ, there might be a Scottish link.

w/r Jo Carle

Hello,

I had forgotten that I placed an inquiry.
Dec. 2006 seems like ages ago now. I have been fooling around with Ancestry.com stuff for almost a year now and have made alot of progress.
Yes, Kenny V. Carle was my father, Kevin Carle is my brother, and Philo D. Carle was my great grandfather.
I forgot now why I made the inquiry into James John Carle.
He is my brother Kevin's "specialty", so to speak.
My great grandfather Philo was born, I believe in Broome Co. He later lived in Albany and married his 2nd wife there before moving back to Binghamton.
Philo's father was John Carl/Carle. He was born abt. 1808 in Blenheim, Schoharie Co. He died after 1880 and before 1892. He is buried with his wife Margaret Maria Suttle Carl in Chenango Valley Cemetery, Town of Fenton, N.Y.
We believe, but have no proof, that John Carl's father was Isaac Carle and his mother was Maria Houghtaling, (several spelling variations). Issac came from Columbia Co., N.Y. to Schoharie Co. N.Y. in abt. 1804 with 5 children. Later John was born there.
It has been my unsuccessful quest to find documented linkage between Isaac Carl b. 1776 and John Carl b. 1808. No luck.
I would be thrilled to hear from you further and find out how you are related.
If you are related to James John Carle, I have found a living great grandaughter of Gen. James living in California, who is very interested in Gen. James history and is willing to communicate with related Gen. James John Carle's.
Hope to hear from you.

Terry K. Carle

Greetings,

Thanks for your inquiry.
I do not know how much I will be able to help you. However I will share what little I have on the Suttles.
I believe you are in E-mail communication with my sister. She has mentioned communicating with someone with your E-mail address. So my sister may have already given you all the info that I have.

Peter Suttle and his wife Rachael are my great great great grandparents on my fathers side (Carl/Carle).
Peters had two daughters, One of his daughters, was Margaret Maria Suttle. She was known as Maria. I have her death certificate and it litsed her name as Margaret Maria Suttle, b. Blenheim Twp. Maria married my gg grandfather John Carl, aka John T. Carl, aka, John T. Carle.
Together they had 11 children. One of them was my great grandfather Philo DeWitt Carle. (Another was James John Carle whose inquiry you answered. He was a great uncle.)
Philo Dewitt Carle had 9 children. One of whom was my grandfather George Warren Carle. My grandfather had 6 children one of whom was my father, Kenneth V. Carle. Kenneth had 7 children, of which I am the oldest. I have 3 other siblings interested in family history. 2 of us subscribe to Ancestry.com.
The earliest reference I have to Peter Suttle is the 1810 Federal Census from Blenheim twp., Schoharie Co. N.Y. On that page Peter Suttle has a wife and two daughters I believe. He shares the census page with Isaac Carle, William carle and James Carle. Isaac Carle was my ggg grandfather. So my ggg grandfathers shared the same census page in Blenheim, Schoharei Co. in 1810. THey were in close geographical proximity.
Peter Suttle was in Blenheim in the 1830 Census, but he was in Broome CO, town of Sanford in the 1840 Census.
My great great grandfather John Carle moved to Broome CO. in 1834. We do not know when he married Maria Suttle. We suspect it was after they moved to Broome CO. but we have no proof. I have looked long and hard for marriage records with no luck.
The Suttles settled in Windsor township area as did the Carle's.
However at some time, some of the Suttles moved to Tioga Co. Pa. around Gaines, Pa.
There is a verbal Carle family history that John Carle and Maria also spent time in Tioga Co. to farm and because of the deer hunting. But I can find no evidence of them there that is documented.
Two of the Carle son's, including my great grandfather Philo, joined Pa. military units in the Civil War in Tioga Co. So they had to have had some connection with Tioga Co., Pa. We suspect that this connectin may have been some of the Suttles that moved There.
I can only find Daniel Suttle, one of Peters sons who can be linked by documents to Tioga Co. but perhaps other Suttles were there also. You have the history of the Suttles from Pa to WV. If you care to share that with me I would be very happy to have it.
I am sure you know that Peter Suttle had abt 7 children. 2 girls, 5 boys we believe.
I believe that Peter was a farmer his whole life.
By the way, an alternative, and perhaps earlier name for the Suttle was Settle, and another variation was: Suttles, as I am sure you have found out.
I have found Peter Suttle in the 1810, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Federal Census.
I did make a trip to Broome COunty this past August to obtain genealogy information.

I was able, through many attempts at phone contacts with people responsible for cemeteries in the Windsor area, to get a hint that some Suttles may be buried in an abandoned cemetery called the "Doolittle Cemetery."
The story of how I found this abandoned cemetery is amazing.
I had received rudimentary directions over the phone from someone who rememberd as a child seeing Suttle headstones in a long forgotten cemetery. When I arrived in the Windsor/OOuquaga area I followd the directions but could find no cemetery despite hours of searching. Dejected, as I was leaving the area I saw someone setting a headstone in a modern cemetery and stopped to ask him if he knew of the Doolittle Cemetery. He did not but knew someone who might. We called this person and he was not home! But his wife told me where he was mowing another cemetery acroos town. I drove there and found this man who did know where the Doolittle cemetery was .My origianl directions were way off.
I found the turn off to the Doolitle cemetery which was the driveway to an abandoned farm house. Then I had to walk 1/4 miles into the woods and There bathed in sunlight was the Doolittle-Sitterly Cemetery!! In the upper left corner of the cemetery, on a hill, were approx. 13 Suttle graves in various conditions. poor to good.
Peter & Rachel and several of their children and grandchildren are buried. There are two stone that say only Mother and Father. I have looked around and believe that they can only be the parents of Peter Suttle! But the stones do not have names on them.
My sister may have sent you pics of the headstones already.
Yesterday I found a missing pic of Chares Suttle headstone and sent it to my sister. If you need E-mail pics of Suttle headstones I will be glad to forward them to you. They include Peter, Rachael, George, Peter Jr. , John Charles, Annie, Resetta, and Ira. I have no pics or images of any Suttle people.
Maria Suttle Carle is buried in an unmarkes plot in the Chenango Valley Cemetery, N.Y. I have that pic also if it is of interest to you.
I believe that all of Peter's family except Daniel stayed in and were buried in Broome Co. But I may be wrong. I have in my ancestry.com program, what I think are the wives and Children of John, Peter Jr., Daneil, and George Suttle gathered from Ancestry.com. I am sure you have this info also.
I do not know where the Suttles came from before they were in Blenheim, Schoharie CO. The Carl/Carle's came from Columbia Co., N.Y. in about 1804.
As you know most "Suttle's" came from eastern England, and Ireland and other parts of Great Britain. But some came from Germany.
The name suttle is anglo-saxon for "Clever man" or "Cunning man".
Most Suttles are in N.Y., W.V., Ohio and Tennessee, N.C..
I believe that if you are using Ancestry.com you can use SEARCH and find my tree to compare my knowledge to yours. I welcome any corrections or additions to my tree.
A good source of information is the Schoharie Co. Historical Society, "Old Stone Fort", 145 Fort Rd., Schoharie , N.Y., 12157. Ph. 518-295-7192.
The town of Windsor historian is Helen Osborn, Ph. 607-655-2601. She is hard to get in touch with but helpful.
I hope I have given you some useful information.

Terry, I am so sorry for the delay in responding!! I had forgotten about this site. If you are Kenny's kid then you have all of Kevin's information don't you?? Your suspicions were right regarding Philo's parentage. I was able to glean that from the 1840 census report (Philo was born in 1839). I believe he was born in Albany but grew up in Broome County, around Windsor is what conventional wisdom tells us. I have visited Philo's grave in the Glenwood Cemetary back in Binghamton. Please feel free to contact me at jc615 at yahoo dot com. It is always nice to meet new family members!!!

I KNOW THAT ON ONE SITE THAT YOU HAD THAT YOU WERE RESEARCHING THE SUTTLE NAME ALSO SO I TAKE IT THAT THE SUTTLE'S MARRIED INTO THE CARLE FAMILY. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE SUTTLE NAME FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS AND WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THE INFO THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE OR ANYONE ELSE WITH THE SUTTLE FAMILY THAT CAME OUT OF NEW YORK. PETER SUTTLE AND DOWN. I UNDERSTAND THAT MARIA SUTTLE CAME FROM ONE OF HIS FAMILY MEMBERS, THIS IS ONE THAT I DO NOT HAVE AND WOULD LOVE TO FOLLOW THIS ONE ALSO AND IF IT WOULD INVOLVE THE CARLE FAMILY TO ME THE BIGGER THE FAMILY THE BETTER IT IS. I DO HAVE THE SUTTLE FAMILY FROM PA INTO WEST VIRGINIA IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

Re: Joseph Carle/Marie Louise Carle

My maternal greatgrandmother was named Marie Louise Carle before she married a Georges (?) Burghard. Marie Louise's Father was an Antoine Carle from Lutzelhause/Lutzerhaus area of Alsace who came to America in 1900 with a daughter, Antoinette, a son-in-law Juan Gless (a Basque who paid their way), another daughter or niece named Estelle (Stella), and others. They settled in El Toro, California and some of these are buried at the Old Cemetary at Mission San Juan Capistrano. I am looking for more info on the Carle line as well as the Burghard line who came from the same area. Can anyone help?
