I am trying to get started on my family tree (father's side)
with little knowledge. My father was born in Ottawa abt.
1913 to Charles and Christina. His siblings were Bryce,
Lorna, Ruth, Claire and Wynn and Guy (deceased at an
early age). One adopted sister by the name of Rita. I can
not find any records of my father and am wondering if
anyone may have heard of this family. He married Dorothy
Roy in 1936 and had two children Gregory and Elizabeth.

Thank you for reading this and of course for any help that
anyone may be.

Greg Carleton

(Published in the Lake Charles American Press for Sunday September 30, 1956, p. 31,Lake Charles, La.)

Carleton-Dahlgren Vows Solemnized

Miss Betty Ann Dahlgren became the bride of Dr. Milton Lee Carleton in the Crown Heights Christian Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at 7:30 p.m. September 28.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Dahlgren, Oklahoma City, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Carlton of Crosby, Texas. Dr. Carlton is residing in Lake Charles.

The Rev. J. Clyde Wheeler officiated at the ceremony. Mrs. Ted McElroy, organist, played the traditional nuptial music and accompanied Joseph Benton, soloist.

The sanctuary was decorated with arrangements of white gladioli flanked on each side by 14 branch candelabra against a background of greenery. In the chancel, centered behind the communion table, was a candelabra with lighted tapers. A satin covered pre dieu (sic) was placed in the center of a gladioli and candelabra arrangement with a background of jade greenery. A white cloth marked the bridal aisle and family pews were tied with satin bows.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose a gown of chantilly lace and gossamer tulle over satin. The elongated bodice was designed with a Sabrina neckline and long tapered sleeves. The front of the bouffant skirt featured alternate tiers of lace and pin pleated tulle and fell into a train in back. Her chapel train was edged with a dust ruffle of tulle. Her fingertip veil of imported illusion fell from a cloche of lace embroidered in seed pearls.

The bridal bouquet was a shower arrangement of white feathered carnations and stephanotis blossoms tied with satin streamers.

Mrs. E. George Dahlgren, Jr. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, served the bride as matron of honor. She wore a cocktail length dress of copen blue iridescent taffeta. Matching velvet framed a shallow yoke at the scoop neckline and a matching velvet inset in the skirt was finished at the waistline with a flat bow. She wore a velvet bow on her head, white shorty gloves, and shoes to match her gown. Her bouquet was a shower arrangement of white gladioli blossoms with copen blue pompoms.

Miss Dorothy Kamp, Oklahoma City, and Miss Sandra Carleton, sister of the groom of Crosby, Texas, were bridesmaids. Their gowns, accessories, and bouquets were identical to those of the matron of honor.

Paul Carleton, brother of the groom of Crosby, Texas, served as best man. Arthur Hoklins III, Lake Charles; E. George Dahlgren, Jr., brother of the bride, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Dr. H.G. McFarland, and Dr. W.B. Fowler, both of Shreveport, La, served as groomsmen and ushers.

A reception was held immediately after the ceremony in the social hall of the church. The bride’s table arrangement was one of garlands of maidenhair fern, white asters, and copen blue pompoms. Five branched candelabra were placed on each side of the cake arrangement.

Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Byron Lamun, Mrs. Leonard Babcock, Mrs. Lawrence Stone, Miss Nancy Roberson, all of Oklahoma City; Mrs. John Miller, Mrs. Keith Kashwer and Mrs. Leroy Coppock from Stillwater, Oklahoma; Mrs. Eugene Needham, Miss Jane Ann Robinson, and Miss Louise Lansden for Norman, Okla., and Miss Jane Babcock from Lake Charles.

For the wedding trip to Colorado the bride chose a sheer wool ensemble in mink brown. The costume was a sheath dress with a silk chiffon top and a short bolero jacket. Her accessories were brown and she wore a bronze chrysanthemum corsage.

The bride has been serving as field director with the Sowela Area Council of Camp Fire Girls in Lake Charles.

The groom is a dentist practicing at 920 ½ Ryan Street.

Out of town guests included: Mrs. W.W.
James Edward Carleton

I am researching for a James Edward Carleton also spelled Carlton/Carelton who would have in the Kansas City, Missouri area around 1869-1870. I have no information on him other than he would have been in his 20's. He is possibly an ancestor of mine. I have found a James Edward in the 1870 census in the Kansas City, Missouri area but do not know which if he is the one that I am looking for. He had a son in 1869 and the son was given the same name as his father. The last name has been spelled various ways as noted in this correspondence. I am hoping that someone will have information or is related to him. I would appreciate hearing any information. Thank you!

Barbara

George T. CARLETON Biography, b. 1805 ME to WI to MN to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 745.

City of La Crosse

GEORGE T. CARLETON, merchant; is one of the pioneers of Wisconsin. He was born in Newcastle, Lincoln Co., Me., Jan. 2, 1805; son of Thomas and Hannah (Hall) Carleton; when about a year old his father removed to Kennebec Co., and he grew up to manhood on his father's farm in that county. At the age of 23, he engaged in the mercantile business, which he has continued up to the present time. While in Maine he was in business in Vassalboro and Waterville. In 1833, he married Eliza Drummond, who died in 1840, leaving two children (since deceased). In 1841, he married Miss Mary Dane, of Skowhegan, Me., and came to Wisconsin in 1843; was three days making the trip from Sheboygan to Fond du Lac with an ox team, with no road but an Indian trail. In the spring of 1844 he built the first sail-boat on Lake Winnebago, for the Indians on the lake and up Wolf River. He carried on business in Fond du Lac till 1851. About the 1st of July in that year he came to La Crosse, remained a few days, then returned to Fond du Lac, and came again in August. At that time he put up a building on Third street, where Giles's pork house now stands, for a store and dwelling. There was no lumber to be had in La Crosse at the time, and he purchased his at Robinson's Mill, and run it down the creek into Black River, thence into the Mississippi and to La Crosse. He burned his lime on a pile of logs for the plastering, and thinks this was the first plastered house in the county. After completing this building he returned to Fond du Lac, and, in November, 1851, removed with his family and a stock of goods to La Crosse; came with horse teams, and was eleven days on the road. He continued in business on Third street till 1869, then removed to Sauk Rapids, Minn., and came to North La Crosse in the spring of 1877. He was three years Alderman of the First Ward of La Crosse; has two sons - George T., born in Waterville, Me., and Fred D., born in Fond du Lac, Wis.; both married and engaged in mercantile business in North La Crosse.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

Looking for info on Elizabeth CARLETON (b. 1753 London), daughter of Zachariah CARLETON. Elizabeth married Rev. Thomas SMITH of Clare, Suffolk, and they settled in Bedford. Children were Elizabeth Carleton, Carleton, Mary Ann, Sophia, Catherine, John Stantiall, and Edward (my gx3 grandfather) born 1787 in Bedford. Edward was also a minister in various counties. Found generations back of Zacharia CARLETON on the www.familysearch.org site but cannot find who he married. Zachariah was a banker in London. He was the son of Owen CARLETON.

Trish LEWIS
Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia
Canada
I am looking for Samuel Carlton and family. Samuel was born 1885 and died 1940. His wife's name was Maude and his children's names were: Bill, Dorothy, Martha, Bernard, Samuel, Ardall and Gladys. I also beleive there were 2-3 more children from Samule and Maude. Their daughter Martha was born in Alberta, Canada, but I believe the rest of the kids were born on the Washington coast area. I am Martha's granddaughter and I am trying to find her family. Thank you. Jackie

Monroe Co GA Bull - Carleton Family Cemetery

Larry Childs did this survey and I'd like to find out more about the people buried here.

Bull Cemetery/ Carleton Cemetery

This cemetery is located in Monroe County Ga. on Juliette Road , State highway 83 on the left side of the road coming from Forsyth to Monticello Ga. Just before you get to the bridge at the river. If you go over the bride you passed it.

There are three marked Burials there and maybe three others I am not sure.

There is a very large monument about eight feet high that can be easily seen from the road about 100 feet into the woods. The cemetery over looks the river.

William Bull
Died 30, 1846

Mildred Gibson Willis Bull

There appears to be and infant size unmarked one as well. This burial is next to Mildred

Dr. J. M. Carleton S. D.
Died February 1851
Dr. Frederic Carleton Johnson (1880-1931) - Carleton namesake?

My wife's great-grandfather was born 1880 in Wisconsin, graduated from the University of Wisconsin, became a physician and radiologist. From the 1930 census, we learned that his father was born in England and his mother was born in New York. He died in 1931 in Dallas, Texas. His obituary informs us he practiced in Hot Springs, Arkansas and later in Birmingham Alabama, where he married a Miss Florence Elizabeth Hancock, who was his nurse. They had one child, Frederic Carleton Johnson, Jr, my wife's grandfather.

I'm posting here on the CARLETON board because we have very few clues about Dr. Johnson's parentage. We are guessing that perhaps his midle given name was to honor his mother, or a maternal ancestor. So if anyone here has a list of CARLETON marriages, my wife and I would very much appreciate hearing from you if there is a record of a CARLETON bride marrying a Johnson groom.

Then again, the presumed CARLETON ancestor might have been from his father's side of the family, and thus from an even earlier generation.

Almost forgot -- Dr. Frederic Carleton Johnson's father was born in England and his mother was born in New York, according to the 1930 census.
Carlton Family from Galbally, Limerick, Ireland

I am looking for information on Thomas Carlton (father John Carlton and mother unknown) and Jane Forde (father Thomas Ford and mother Jane Clancy). (Last names sometimes spelled as Carleton and Forde on records found) Thomas and Jane were married in Roman Catholic Chapel of Hospital in the Registrar's District of Hospital in the Union of Killmallock, County of Limerick, Ireland according to the marriage registration I have. They had three children, John (called him Jack) 1873, Catherine 1876, and Bridget 1878 all born in Mitchelstown, Galbally, Limerick, Ireland. I believe there is a fourth child, William Carlton also born in Ireland abt. 1875 but I am still waiting on a birth record on him. The family then moved to Wales and had another child, Marie 1881 and lived in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales according to the 1881 census record. Jane, John, Catherine, Bridget and Marie came to america from the Liverpool port to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania aboard the ship "SS Lord Clive" July 27, 1885. Thomas had come over about 1882. They moved to western Pa, Fayette Co., Westmoreland Co., and Washington Co and surrounding areas. I would love to talk to anyone with any information on this family line.

I am doing Carlton Genealogy and looking for info on John Carlton b ca 1838 d after 1873 and his wife Eliza Robertons. Have lots of info on the Carlton's. Will share.
Eugene Carlton Goodwin

My great grandfather, Edward FARRELL (father Bryan), born about 1820, had three sisters. They lived in Co. Tyrone, Ireland near Strabane. One married a CARLETON (Carlton?), another a Carlin and the third, a McGlynn. I would like to find the Carleton relatives of this Carleton / Farrell connection. Can anyone help ?

Would like to hear from any descendents of this couple. I know of one son named Eddie. Mary was the daughter of Max and Freda (Writer) Wunchel. She had a brother named Luther and possibly a sister named Elsie. I think she was born in Kansas, lived as a young girl in Iowa Park, TX, and the last address I had was from Compton, California. I have pictures and letters that she wrote to my father, her lst cousin (Ben F. Writer).
Kay Wofford
garryw@direcpc.com

Australia to Ireland and all hands were lost. The year should be 1868.Records indicate that there may be siblings. Any connections?

Redding, Susanna and Peter Carleton of Landaff and Bath, Grafton, NH

Susanna REDDING appears to be the daughter of Moses REDDING and Priscila RIDER of Middleboro, Plymouth, MA (1790) and Barnet, Caledonia, VT (1820). I found that Susanna b. 31 March 1785 was the sister of Thankful (REDDING) Mc KEEN of Landaff, Grafton, NH (1810) living very close to Peter & Susanna (REDDING) CARLETON. Further support for the connection is demonstrated in the names of Peter and Susanna's children: Susanna REDDING who married Peter CARLETON of Bath, Grafton, NH. In 1810 Landaff, Grafton, NH we find James MC KEEN and Peter CARLETON living just 3 doors apart. We also find your marriage record for James and Thankful (REDDING) MC KEAN in 1804, and Peter and Susanna (REDDING) CARLETON were married in 1807 also in Landaff, Grafton, NH. Further evidence that this Susanna, Mrs Peter CARLETON, is the same as the Susanna b.1785 daughter of Moses and Priscilla (RIDER) REDDING including the use of their names in the names of the children of Peter and Susanna (REDDING) CARLETON:
The first son was named Edmund Edward CARLETON named after Peter's father, b.in Bath 9 April 1808; Moses Redding CARLETON was their second son b. 10 Sept 1809 in Bath or Landaff; 3rd son was William Hutchins CARLETON, b.1811 named after father's grandparents; 4th Frederick Cleveland CARLETON was born in 1813; 5th was Abigail Priscilla CARLETON b. 1814 and named after Abigail (HUTCHINS) CARLETON, mother of Peter; and Priscilla named after Susanna's mother Priscilla (RIDER) REDDING; and Lucy Johnston CARLETON was the 6th child b. in 1820. I am unclear of the Johnston and Cleveland family connections if any."
James Carleton, born Dublin 1841

James Carleton is my great grandfather. He was part of the Irish contingent that defended the Vatican from Garibaldi and was taken prisoner. He entered the U.S. through New Brunswick, Canada, and settled in Medford Massachusetts. I believe his wife's name was Mary Crooke but not positive. He was part of the Fenian movement that planned on invading Canada. Any information at all would be appreciated.

Anyone know of a Carleton marrying a Bean in NH?

My ggg-grandmother's name was Rebecca Carleton Bean and she was born in 1820 (most likely in Nashua, Hillsboro, NH). She married George G. Hale of Nashua, Hillsboro, NH on May 23, 1839.

I have no idea what Rebecca's parents names were, but I'm hoping her middle name of Carleton is a clue (maybe her mother's maiden name?).

If you know of any Carleton's marrying any Bean's in NH around the ealry 1800's, please respond to this message. I have hit a wall!

Thank you!
Emily (Hale) Hardwick

CARLETON/SHAW/HALLOCK, Auburn, Maine - 1900's

I am trying to locate any living descendants of my paternal grandfather's sister, maiden name Mildred Beatrice Shaw, b. September 28, 1900 in Webb's Mill, Casco, Cumberland, Maine to Elmer Chester and Lucy Churchill (Edwards) Shaw. She married Alton J. Carleton of Auburn, Maine on August 26, 1918. He was born about March of 1893, I believe to Robert and Margaret Briggs Carleton, probably in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine. I have located a death archive record listing a Mildred B. Carleton for March 2, 1972 dying in Lewiston, Maine at the age of 71 years. This fits. Mildred and Alton had two children - Alton, Jr., b. about 1925 and Jean, b. about November of 1927. I already knew of the marriage and children; the 1930 Census has confirmed approximate dates. They were living in Auburn, Maine at that time. A member of my family believes that when she saw Jean during the 1950's, her family was then living in Skowhegan, Maine. Jean Carleton, (if the Maine Marriage Archives haven't failed me, and this is yet to be confirmed), married a man named Harold B. Hallock March 14, 1950, again, probably in Auburn. If I have located the correct family in the 1930 Census, Harold was born about 1925; his mother's name was Velma. While reviewing information in the Maine Marriage Archives, another marriage quite by chance caught my attention - A "Carleton H. Hallock" of Auburn, Maine was married August 16, 1986. I found it more than interesting that his first name was Jean's maiden name, and the middle initial "H" could possibly stand for "Harold". I am wondering if this man is a son of Jean and Harold Hallock, or if using very short generations, perhaps a grandson. If any of this information sounds or is familiar to anyone, or if you can confirm or refute any of it, please contact me. Thank you, Mary

Winifred Carleton/Alicia Prescott Skinner

I am looking for cousins who are the children of Winifred and Alicia. Winifred (1887-1982). Alicia (1909-1981). Alicia was the daughter of Prescott Skinner, my mother's favorite uncle.
I have a lot of information on the Skinner side but nothing on the Carleton side nor anything about their children. Anyone know this family? Thanks!

Looking for Lineage of Martha Maria Carleton (born approx 1830)

I'm looking for information on the parents and lineage of Marth Maria Carleton, who married John Inman Eastman (DPOB 1831 Middlesex, MA) in 1856 in Concord NH. They had at least three children (Helen Carleton, Maria Louise, and Harriet Lee Eastman). Harriet (born 1864 in Philadelphia) was my paternal great grandmother. One of my sisters has Carleton as a middle name.

Lots of Carletons out there, but I am having trouble tracking this part of the family line past Harriet Lee Eastman. Any long-lost cousins out there? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Jeannette Davis

The only information that I have is that Ralph Carleton's parents were John Carleton and Sarah Newton. Can anyone assist with additional information about these two?

Carlton and/or Carleton

I have wondered if the spelling of Carlton, without an e, or Carleton, with an e, has confounded our search for the New England Carltons/Carletons. I have had a Carleton in South Carolina tell me the ALL Carletons came to the new world through Virginia. I have had a New Englander tell me that ALL Carletons came to the New World through Boston (Charlestown), MS.
I am perplexed with these revelations. Can anyone help me know which person might be correct before I attempt to learn more about my family tree. For starters, I would like to learn more about the background of George Washington Carleton, my grandfather, who was George Washington Carlton.
