My ggrandfather, Walter Cope Carlile, was born 1857 in Philadelphia and raised in Chattanooga, TN, where his father was the mayor after the Civil War. They were a prominent family and the one picture of Walter and his wife Mary Helen (Nichols) shows them in costumes of 18th century France, probably for a costume ball. Their children were Margaret, Thomas B., Helen, and Morton. The last documentation I have is Walter's presence at Margaret's baptism at Grand Rapids, MI, in 1884. Family gossip suggests that Walter was a rounder and left Mary Helen with the children. I have not been able to trace him after the birth of Morton in 1890. Does anyone know anything about him?
