He was James Carlisle, born about 1758 and died in 1833. He had two wives. Nancy Williams and Sarah Reno.

Does anyone know if he or any of his siblings may have migrated to Pennsylvania? I know this is a tough one but I am trying to establish a link to the Carlisles who settled around the Juniata/Mifflin area of Pa. around 1750.

Bill Carlisle

I turned over the information I had to a cousin but going from memory the James you refer to may be the second James. The family repeatedly used the names John, Robert, and James
creating some confusion. His father, James died in 1753 in Augusta County and was from Newry Parrish, County of Down, Northern Ireland. His will is also in the Augusta Will Book.
You may want to contact Pat or Ted Eggleston telford@exis.net
Sorry I was not able to do more.

Chalkley's only entry from WB 1, p. 3, names John Wilson, admin. of Robert Wilson.
I find James first in Augusta Court Order Book 3, p. 415, when he & mother, Elizabeth are named on 21 Mar 1753, admin. of his father, James. Their bond is on p. 427 of ACCOB 3.
James is of legal age (at least 22), so he was b. no later than
21 Mar 1751.
Do you have info on his father, mother & sisters, if any?

The names you mentioned are likely to be my family. If so, James did not go anywhere but is buried behind Clover Creek Presbyterian chapel 7 miles South of McDowell in Highland County, Virginia. Some confusion exists due to shifting boundaries: the Carliles never moved but county lines did. Their land was originally in Augusta County, then Bath County and finally Highland County. James' headstone reads, "Revolutionary War Soldier - died 1802" James was badly wounded at Guilford Court House and was carried home by brothers Robert & John. Start at Augusta County Will Book #1, page 3.

Correction. James was not a justice. First note on him names admin. of his estate. USGenWeb-Virginia is a good source. Go to VA files, scroll down to Chalkley's Chronicles. We may be verry distantly related. James is of the tree of a son-in-law
whose lines intersect with at least four of mine.

James was more likely b. ca. 1715. He was on the first panel of judges named when Augusta County was formed in 1745.
He m. Nancy Campbell, b. ca. 1716, d/o William & Sarah, in 1746 in Augusta Co. First ch. was Jane, b. 24 Nov 1746, d. 1787. His son, James was b. ca. 1758. James' will is found in Bath Co. Will Book (WB) 1, p. 211. It is dtd 16 Jan 1802 & probated at the Jun 1802 session of the Bath Co. Court. Sons, John & James are named executors; so James was still in Virginia in January 1802. Other sons named are Robert, William, Samuel, & Alexander. Also named are wife, Nancy & daughters, Jinny, Nancy, & Elizabeth Hicklin. His inventory was submitted 14 Jun 1802, WB 1, p. 224.

I have an ancestor - James Carlisle born 1725 in Orange County, VA- died in 1802 in Jackson River, Bath, VA--- He married Nancy Rachel Campbell in 1716 in Augusta, VA. My direct ancestor must be his son- James who emigrated to Ohio in 1800 to start Tobacco farming. I would like to know more about the will you mentionned. I am not absolutely positive that my James is the son of this James????

Actually, Pheba was the daughter of David's second wife. I still don't know anything about his first wife. Almina, therefore, was David's third wife. There were one or two more after Almina.
Recently discovered your request re: David Carlisle. Your description fits like a puzzle piece in my search. David Carlisle's 2nd marriage was to my great great grandmother, Almina (Wilhelmina Beitner Johnson)Carlisle. David's daughter (Pheba Carlisle) by his 1st wife was approx. 10 yrs old when he married Almina. Almina died 8 yrs later. The 1900 Census for Grand Traverse County lists both David & Pheba AND a "border" Nellie Myers. David had 4 sibs: George, Horace, Esther & Jenusa. Since David is not my blood line, I havent pursued further inquiry re: 1st wife or Pheba. Please let me know if this is helpful to you.

So far as I've been able to research they arrived in Michigan about 1868, settling in St Clair Co., having come from Ontario. The first of the family to arrive in Ontario came from Northern Ireland although he attended college in Glasgow.

I grew up in Michigan and remember how rare the name Carlisle was outside the thumb area.

Kathy

It is not certain that William J. Warnock was a "junior" in today's use of the word. No documentation has been found for his middle name. His older brother James was known as "junior" which, then, was used to differentiate a son from another relative of the same name - grandfather, uncle, older cousin, etc.
I don't know where you got your information, but it would seem that someone thought James Jr. & William J. were the same individual.
That I do not have the parents / ancestry of most of the wives, doesn't mean the information may not be out there - only that I have not yet researched most of the "married ins" except for my own line.
Following are immediate families of oldest to youngest son. I left out full dates for the sake of brevity. [Where first name is in parentheses, the individual was known by middle name]:
SAMUEL LAKEN WARNOCK + Rachel LOWREY (m. 1906). The info I have was sent to me by another researcher so I have not verified it. Also was Mary Forrester sister to Elizabeth that marr George?
I am sorry I do not. They had 5 children, and I only knew of 3, Corrine, Sherman and Dugan. I am assuming that they lived in Flora, Illinois or that vicinity at some point because that is where my dad (Sherman) was born. Sherman was born in 1916 and his mom (Amanda) died when he was 7 and his father (William C) died when he was 17. This is what I was told when I was still in school, so dates might not be accurate.

Barb

You may want to check the dates out a little more.I had thought he died in the 1860s too, then found he was still living at age 74 with his son. He is listed on the 1870 census 6th Civil District, Shelby Tenn. page 144. The scribe mistook the name for Chambley Carlisle but on close inspection you can tell it is Chambliss. He had $2000 of real estate. Quiet a sum for those days. Chambliss was a witness to William Herbert's will in 1920 and moved to Tenn between 1835 and 1840. He is in my direct line also through James V. Carlisle one of his sons.
Its nice to visit with someone from Elizabeth's line.
Steve

Both were born in Alabama, and Cupidene's obituary indicates that she was born in Pike Co., Alabama - but does not list a maiden name.

J.D. was born abt. 1917, Cupidene 2 Jan 1919 (died 9 Jan 2004 in Winter Haven, Florida).

They had at least five children: Robert Harold, Carolyn, Phillip, Royce Hayward, and Earl. At least three children were born in Alabama before the family relocated to Hillsborough Co., Florida in 1945 per Cupidene's obituary and the 1945 Florida Census.

Any information would be helpful, I have so far been unable to confirm Cupidene's maiden name or J.D.'s acutal name.

I am researching Landon Carlisle's wife, Nancy. I believe she was born Nancy McDonald, about 1811 in VA. Landon is buried in North Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton, St Joseph County, IN. Nancy is believed to be buried there but no grave stone exits for her.
