My father's name was Roscoe. His mother's maiden name was Carlow. Her family was from Maine. I remember he had an aunt named Gertrude that lived in Winchendon, Massachusetts whom I visisted when I was in my early or pre-teens . Walter may have been his second cousin. I remember visiting someone like that in Maine when I was a teenager around 1964. The civil war soldier Albert Carlow of the 5th and 146th New York regiments is my grandmother's grandfather. I do not remember my Murray (Carlow)grandmother; she died before I was born. I don't know how she came to live in the Boston area. My mother is 91 and still living. She may remember some of this. She lives in Massachusetts; I live in California. Contact me with specific questions and I will see what I can come up with.

In the 5 years since I posted my inquiry I have discovered much. Uriah did have a brother Lyman. I have NOT done much research on him. Other sibilings include Jane Carlow who married William Pels; Sylvanus (who married but I don't know who yet), Nancy; Jacob; Stephen Jr., married to Elizabeth Kelly; Grace; William Rider Carlow; and Abigail. This line has been VERY difficult to follow because they all named their children with the same names and records are hard to come by. They traveled quite a lot from Syracuse to Albany to Orange, Ulster and Dutchess Counties in NY to Manhattan, to Cape Cod and back. The Carlow/Callow family was definetly in Massachusetts.

Please contact me directly if you would like to exchange information.

Larry

Hi Larry,
I am working on the Carlow family. My husband is the grandson of George T. Carlow. I have traced George to the Carlow family from MA. I believe that this family maybe related to Lymon Carlow, who maybe a brother of Uriah Carlow. Do you have any info that may connect them?
~Gail Carlow

I am also the g?grandaughter of Johann Jacob Carlow. I've got to get everything sorted on paper. My g?grandfather John Carlow was born at sea coming to America. They came on the Priscilla. Somewhere we found that they originated from Desden, Germany....it was Prussia then. It got delayed in England. They ran out of money on the voyage and had to pay it off when they arrived. My g?grandfather...another John...fought in the civil war. New Brunswick is near Carlow Island off the coast of Maine. My Uncle Arthur told me that we once owned it. I am wondering if they came for religious freedom as they were Presbyterians and Rome was creating havoc then. I think it's funny that my father Rocky was the first generation of Carlow Catholics in America on my paternal side. Another interesting thing that I found out is that there is a Native American g?grandmother in there somewhere. Lanatia. I will try and contact Michael Kaehn and AJones. Maggie Breedlove has lots of information. She lives in Australia and is a cousin. She's very organized and has good information. Watch for her on the boards. We have a beautiful family....truly gifted and interesting....we've come a long way from the Priscilla :) Cousin, Donna
sm0kinmama@cox.net

Hi, I am your first cousin. Your sister Linda was my favorite person in the world. I remember Peter and Kitchky. I visited Uncle Arthur many times. And, visited your mother in the early 90's. I have our family history back to 1751. I drive by the house at 575 whenever I am in Boston area and go into the hardware store. My father Rocky died when he was 32 and many issues kept us apart. I have always been sorrowful that we could not know each other better. I live in Rhode Island. You can reach me by e-mail @ sm0kinmama@cox.net (it's a zero in my handle not a capital O) Please contact me. I have no picture of my beloved grandparents...only those that I have in my heart from a young child. Donna Carlow Polofsky

I also wanted you to know that I have a James Carlow and another family, William Carlow in Warren County from 1860 census and on. Here is what I have.

William born in Dundas, Ontario married a Mary Ann ?.
Children: 1) William born 1851 in Dundas ON, came to Warren with family in 1860. He married and is buried in Warren, wife died 1917. 2) Catherine, 3) Mary Ann 4) Margaret.

James Carlow b. 1822 Ireland, died Warren, PA 10-6-1902, married Mary ? born 1824 Ireland.
Children: James F who married and resided in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. I don't think he had biological children, just step children.
Mary Ann who married a John Donoghue and resided in Titusville, PA, no children .
Sarah.....who was unmarried, died/bured Titusville.

I suspect my Sylvester Carlow family and these two above might have been related as they resided in Warren County, PA, I have no proof yet.
Ginny Eakin
I would like to see the genealogy map of the Carlows with Sylvester in it. Unfortunately I believe my Sylvester was born approx 1805-1809 in Ireland. I am told by some elderly family members that the Carlows were from northern Ireland. Another member said they were on the Spanish Armada when it wrecked and ended up in Ireland.
Regardless my Sylvester Carlow ended up near Niagra Falls Ontario, married his wife, Mary Kelleher. I am told the Kellehers were originally from County Carlow (doesn't it sound backwards?)
Info in Ontario is very difficult to secure.
In Warren, Warren, PA I have found three Carlows (Carlo's also spelled): Sylvester, James and William. I suspect James and Sylvester might be brothers. William I do know resided in Dundas, Ontario before USA..........but that area cannot come up with any Carlow records.
So I would gladly compare my Sylvester with yours?
Ginny

I have found the above Carlow's living in Warren County, PA in the latter 1800's census.
Sylvester and wife Mary and children: Felix, Hannah, Sylvester jr, Alice, Elizabeth were living in Farminton Twp of Warren County in 1860 census, dau. Margaret wasn't born until 1864.
Then I've found a William Carlow who was born in Dundas, Ontario, living in Warren County and a James living in Warren County.
Sylvester's family attended William's funeral, so I assume they are related.
I also have a Mariam Anna Carlow who married a Joannem Eagan 11/5/1872 in Warren County, catholic church and a Margarettam Carlow who married a Edwardum Egan 9/20/1876 in Warren County, catholic church.
I hope someone feels they are related!!!!
I have most of the information about Edward DeWolf Carlow.
Edward Turner Carlow said his father, Edward DeWolf and his mother, Sarah, were killed by Indians. We are not sure when but it was after 1860 because I have Edward DeWolf on the 1860 census. The children, Edward, Fannie and Lucy were taken by the Indians. Lucy was sold to a Dutch family and evenually married one of the sons.
Fannie was sold to an abusive family and evenually went in- sane. Edward lived with the Indian's until he was 16 and then became a Indian scout for the calvary.
I was curious about Hiram's family.

My ancestor is Edward DeWolf Carlow born 1828,son of Jacob Henry & Elizabeth Carlow and Hiram Carlow's brother. I found Hiram on the 1880 census also but I also found Hiram on the 1870 census in Rockland, Brown Co., Wisconsin. Wife Hannah, childern Elizabeth Josephine, Hiram, Haley, Seymore. I haven't been able to figure it out because Hiram would be 17 in 1880 and on the 1880 census the 17 year old is Higley. Then Haley the 3 year old on the 1870 would be 13 in 1880 and the 13 year old is Mahala on the 1880. Semner and Seymore could be the same and just hard to read on the orginal. If you have anymore information let me know.

CARLOW, Sylvester and Mary of Warren, PA abt. 1860's

Sylvesters wife I believe is Mary Kelleher Carlow. They are the parents of Sylvester Jr (lived in Erie, PA), Rosalie Margaret Carlow md. Richard Mullins (lived Warren, PA - she born 1864 Warren, PA and md. 1881 Warren, PA).; Hannah Carlow md. Martin Shean (lvied Chicago, IL),; and Elizabeth Carlow md. James Harrison Jennings...think she born in Canada, he born Brockport, NY...md. in Tidioute, PA Warren County abt. 1872).
I also have a James CArlow listed in census in Warren, PA and I would think he is related also but I don't know how.
I am told that the Carlow's were orig. from Spain??, were on a ship that shipwrecked and ended up in Ireland....and from there to Canada....possibly St. Catherines, Lincoln County, Canada????
I cannot seem to find the Sylvester and Mary and children all in one census together.... I've found some Carlows/Carlos in Warren, but I can't connect things. Does anyone have any Carlows that strayed to Warren, PA????
Ginny

HI! I have some Carlows in my family tree, but they are in Pennsylvania in abt. 1860's for sure, but they came from???? I am told that they were from Spain and while on a ship which wrecked...they ended up in Ireland?? And from that point they went to St. Catherines, Canada (Lincoln County). Where they went from then I do not know evidentally by 1864 to Warren, PA Warren County because my grgrandmother, Rosalie Margaretha CARLOW was born, she married Richard Mullins of Warren, PA. She had an older brother Sylvester Carlow. Sister, Hannah who married a Martin Shean and lived in Chicago, IL. Another sister, Elizabeth (born abt 1850ish in Canada) and she married a James H. Jennings and resided in Tidioute, PA.
Did any of your Carlows/Carlo's wander to PA????
I know I have a James Carlo in Warren, PA (not sure where he fits in). I do know they moved around, just don't know where??? or why???
Ginny

if this person is still available regarding Carlow family history I would love to know if she has any with my line.....which was in poss. St. Catharines, Lincoln, Ontario or other areas of Canada.....and they settled in Warren, Warren, PA, having my great grandmother there March 20 1863/64, Rosalie Margaretha Carlow , parents Sylvester and Mary Kelleher Carlow. Sylvester might have been married previous to a Elizabeth McGee, having a child, Elizabeth Carlow who married James harrison Jennings, residing by 1880 census in Tidioute, Warren, PA with family. Also a son Sylvester Jr born about 1859/60 in Warren, PA. Als a sis Hannah who married a Martin Shean and lived in Chicago, Cooks, IL.
Rumor was Sylvester might have had a fight with a brother and never reconciled......????
Ginnyeakin@csonline.net

Hi! This would be really nice if we linked our Carlows as I am at a standstill. Here is a brief of what I have:
My greatgrandmother was Rosalie Margaretha Carlow born March 20, 1863/64, dau. of Sylvester and Mary Kelleher Carlow, born in Warren, Warren, PA. She married Richard
Mullins.
Siblings known are:
1) unknown md. a Gaffney
2) Hannah md. a Martin Shean, lived in Chicago, Cooks, IL
3) Sylvester Jr md. Nellie Hurley, relocated from Warren, PA
to Erie PA
4)Elizabeth md. James Harrison Jennings....she may be
the oldest and had a differ mother (mary McGee) and
from St. Catharines, Lincoln, Ontario (catholic). They
are found in census in Tidioute, Warren, PA.
NOW, rumor has told me that the Carlo/Carlows were orig. spanish, were on the Spanish Armada when wrecked putting them in Ireland, and ending up moving on to Ontario by 1850's at the very latest.
It is also hearsay that perhaps Sylvester had brother(s) and they had a spat and never to see each other again?
I hope you might be able to help?
Ginny

Hi Cousin Donna,
My name is Maggie Breedlove. I too am descended form Roscoe Carlow and Elizabeth Crane/Crain. My Grandmother was Ella Carlow Breedlove #5 youngest sister of Walter #2. My understanding from Franklin Sherburne (Son of Aunt Gertie, that is Gertrude Carlow Buckley Sherburne #3) is that the Carlows and Cranes/Crains are all English and not Irish....some may have married Irish. My mothers notes say that your grandmother, Nellie Curtain Carlow was born in Ireland. I'd love to hear from you. Warmly, Maggie

Kathie Ann, I just found this posting of yours that dates back to Apr. 2000, so I assume you may have obtained additional information on Nathanial Carlow by now. However, just is case I thought I would pass along my non-proven findings on this Carlow family.
I believe Nathanial Hudson Carlow is the son of James Carlow and Polly Hudson. James Carlow (2) is the son of James (1) Carlow and Mary Dickey.

James (1) Carlow is found in the 1790 and 1800 census of German Twp, Fayette Co PA. James was in the Rev War. Found in the Roll of the Third Company in the Eighth Battalion of Cumberland Co Militia PA. The family of James and Mary moves to Jeffereson Co. Oh, Ohio Co. WV, Belmont Co. Oh and then on to Muskingum Co. Oh between 1800 and 1830. Their son John appears in Madison Twp. Guernsey Co. Oh in 1811. James (1) disappears from records in 1810, 1820 and Mary appears on the 1830 Blue Rock Twp. Muskinghum Co. Oh census. I assume James (1) died during that period. Other children: Katherine (my line married Jacob Coleman), John and Agnes (married David Parshal).

James Carlow (B: PA per 1860 census) and Polly Hudson (B: NY per 1860 census) are married I believe in Jefferson Co. Oh before 1813, where Nathanial Hudson Carlow was born on December 20, 1813. In 1850 James and Polly are found in the census for Blue Rock Twp Muskingum Co Oh. Other children: Jesse J., Horace W., Abdallah, William D., James Curtis and John.

Nathanial Hudson Carlow and Mary Hannah Richey are married in Monroe Co., Oh on 11/9/1837. I believe they are the N. H. Carlow family in the 1850 Platte Twp, Andrew Co MO census. Chidren: James Hudson, Nathaniel, George, Mary (Hannah M.), Caroline F., William A.

I hope this helps get you on your way investigating this Carlow line. As I mentioned above I can not prove these relationships as they are piecemealed together from various misc. sources and census records.

Bill

Thank you so much Bill! With my family having been Blue Rock residents, I also have a lot of Colemans in the line. Coleman/Carlow are just part of the Blue Rock area history.

I have an Abdellah Carlow into my extended family line. He was married Adeline Mawhorter in 1856 in Muskingum County, Ohio and is the father of Robert M. Carlow, who married Lorinda Urban. I am researching Urbans, and found him and thought it were an unusual name. I have his line traced into the 1930s.

CARLOW or CALLOW, Uriah and Sarah VIELE

From the Collections of the Dutchess Co. Hist. Society - Volume IV, Compiled by Helen Wilkinson Reynolds, Page 25, we know that Uriah Carlow married Sarah Viele (daughter of Pieter Viele and Gerritje Freer) at Poughkeepsie, NY on April 05, 1805.

I am trying to link the possiblity that Uriah CARLOW was actually Uriah CALLOW and either the son or grandson of one Stephen CALLOW of both New York City and Dutchess County (Post Revolutinary War Time Frame).

Has anyone ever suspected the possiblity that CALLOW could have evolved into CARLOW?

Does anyone have any information about the name URIAH CARLOW or CALLOW of New York?

Thanks

Larry Lachance
