Photo of Charles Carlsen b.1868 Do you know this man?

This mysterious ancestor was apparently "born at sea" while his mother was coming to the US. The only photo I have is from around 1895/6, taken in Willimantic, CT. He was born in 1868. He was married to Eva Sydleman b.1874 and had a daughter Helen b.1894. He left his family (daughter and in-laws) after he was widowed in 1896. Upon further research, I find that he died in Canada in 1922, and had married two more times (Mary I Lawford Hall and Susanna E Lillie). Any additional information would be appreciated.
Thanks, Stacia

I don't think he's related to me. I have an Uncle Charles Arthur Carlsen, born 24 Nov 1915 in Brooklyn, New York, New York, USA. He lived in New York all his life and died 18 Apr 1975 in Patchogue, Suffolk, New York, USA. My Uncle Charles is the brother of Carl Carlsen and son of Edvard Karlsen. Carl's birth spelling was Karl Karlsen. The spelling must have been changed through his immigration to the US.
Re: Looking for info about athlete, Scott Carlsen

I don't know Scott Carlsen and I'm not related. I am trying to help you search to find him.

http://www.goodwillgames.com/html/past_1986handball.html
1986 lists him playing handball for the USA. He participated, so death (if if did occur - see SSDI doubts), was after this time.

I suggest you contact Scott's parents, and delicately approach the subject. Simply saying you are contacting about an upcoming 35th HS reunion or get together, if he is dead, they will say so, and you can ask if he has other family that you can contact, or to let his classmates know. Again DELICATELY, but if you know where his parents are, why not go directly to them.

Other places to search:
Death records for the county Colorado Springs is in, after the 19786 Olympic date. Same goes for newspapers.

Local home town newspapers for death.

I would still question his death, since there is NO Social Security death record. He would have HAD to have a Social Security number, especially since he left the country to participate in the games, to work, bank, taxes, etc.

If you look, you will see that there is a Scott R. Carlsen, connected to the right place/parents in CA. If you use Ancestry, you can also track him in WA (1996). For privacy reasons, I will not post this. Try peoplesearch.com and Ancestry "US public records".

San Lorenzo is in Alameda County, so....

California Birth Index, 1905-1995
about Scott R Carlsen
Name: Scott R Carlsen
Birth Date: 31 Jan 1957
Gender: Male
Mother's Maiden Name: Gustafso (might be Gustafson?)
Birth County: Alameda

California Marriage Index, 1960-1985
about Scott R Carlsen
Name: Scott R Carlsen
Age: 22
Est. Birth: abt 1957
Spouse Name: Patricia D Sattui
Spouse Age: 21
Date: 15 Sep 1979
Location: Alameda

I did not find him in the Social Security death index, which I would expect for this timeframe. He would have had to have a Social Security number to have a job, or a bank account, so his death should have been recorded with SSDI.

There are several CARLSENs still living in San Lorenzo - I suggest starting there. If he did die, there is probably an obit in the local paper in that time frame, if his parents still lived there.

You might also try contacting the Olympic Training Center to see if they have info. Are you sure it was Rocklin COLORADO, not CALIFORNIA?

You might try Classmates.com, as this is 35th reunion year, and some graduates may know what happened to him.

I'm looking for info about Scott Carlsen. I've been told he died at the Olympic Training Center in Rocklin, Colorado. It may have been in 1984 or 5. He was an indoor handball player. He was born about 1957. He was a 1975 graduate of Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo. California. Gordon Miller, a 1976 graduate of Arroyo High School would like to know if Scott was ever married, had any children, and what caused his death. I believe Scott lived in Rocklin Colorado in about 1984 or 5. That may have been the year he died.
Mildred Lepley, lepleyd@grm.net 1-660-944-2112

Hi Anette! Thanks for your reply....yes, indeed your story is very similar to mine and, of course, the name CARLSEN is the same.:) I kinda took a break for several months from searching for my grandfather and grandmother when I just happened on a researcher who helped me tremendously on here, and now I get this message from you. I'm taking it as a "synchronic" message to pick up where I left off...lol. I wish you lots of luck with your search and..hopefully, our paths with cross again ....Cheers and good luck!
Hi. I read youre story and I was suprised how much alike it is mine. My great grand father was in the Us navy Erling hjorth carlsen born 1902 he married during the war and had a son in the brooklyn eria. He allready had wife and son in sandefjord norway, after the war my great grand mother had to make a search for him. when he came back home he told his famili that he was told they where killed during the war thats why he remarriered and had a son. The son was born around 1940 so that dont match what you have but the story us very much alike. My great grand father was a seaman and in 1958 he was reported missing in the red sea, we dont know what happend. My grand father has tried for a lond time to find his half brother. He died of cancer in agust last year and now I am trying to find out what happened I know my grand father would like me to try on even if his not with me anymore.

Best regards Anette Fiksdal Carlsen

Thank you so much, mjancestor2 for all the information you so kindly put forth to me. The military records I was able to glean in the past year but your info on his occupation, etc. I did not have. Thanks again. As you suggested, I have applied to New York for marriage licenses for my grandparents but they informed me there was no record, so maybe they, in fact were not married unfortunately. I will, however try to get my parents marriage certificate as you suggested...what might be listed on that, that would be helpful?? Anyway, I sincerely appreciate your input, it's been a long time since I have heard from anyone with any information......Best regards, Mare Carlsen

U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946
about Ellsworth G Carlson
Name: Ellsworth G Carlson
Birth Year: 1916
Race: White, citizen (White)
Nativity State or Country: New York
State: New York
County or City: Kings

Enlistment Date: 1 Oct 1942
Enlistment State: New York
Enlistment City: Fort Jay Governors Island
Branch: Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA
Branch Code: Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA
Grade: Private
Grade Code: Private
Term of Enlistment: Enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law
Component: Selectees (Enlisted Men)
Source: Civil Life

Education: 2 years of high school
Civil Occupation: Job Pressman (Printing press operator, job press. ) or Casting Machine Operator
Marital Status: Single, without dependents
Height: 71
Weight: 147

**********

Try www.nara.gov to get his military records. As a direct descendant, you can have access to all of them, since he is dead.
Ask for the DD-214
AND medical records.

See if you can track from his mother - a marriage or divorce record, etc.

Birth cert is probably correct, as mother probably was the one to fill it out. If father was not in picture from young age, and he couldn't remember, he might have put what he thought at the time was the right name. If his middle name was George, that may be why he used that. He may have been named for a "Joseph George" or a "George Joseph".
Mother's marriage to step father should give some idea if she was married before. If divorce - the early divorce records have lots of info in them. If they never married, that becomes a more difficult problem.

Try looking at his marriage certificate to your mother - that may shed another clue.

Good luck!

Cynthia Olson, built in 1918 at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, for the Oliver J Olson Company, out of San Francisco. she was under the direction of Master Berthel Carlsen. December 7th, 1941: 1,000 miles northeast of Diamond Head, and 1,200 miles west of Cape Flattery, the Cynthia Olson was torpedoed and sank by the Japanese submarine, the I-26. she was enroute from Tacoma, Washington, to Honolulu, with a full cargo of Army supplies.

on board were 33 crew members, and 2 U.S. Army soldier passengers. there were no survivors. the Olson was under contract with the U.S. Army Transport Service

Note the attached comment:
Comment from eleanorbshook
12/12/06 3:38 PM | Permalink
My stepfather William Peterson Buchtele was the first Mate
on that ship and it was not sunk by a torpedo. In fact if the SS Lurline had paid attention or Port Huyeneme or Corregidor in the Philippines radio operators that received the call from the Cynthia, they would had the quardants as to where the Japenese fleet was as the Cynthia was in sight of it at dawn.
Looking for verification of Ellsworth Carlsons father

I am trying to find verification of a birth certificate of my father Ellsworth Carlsen born June 27th, 1916 in Brooklyn, New York. The father's name listed on B.C. is Joseph Carlsen age 43 and Anna Laubenberger age 26. I also sent for my father's social security application and received it. My father is applying for it when he is 23 and it asks him what his births fathers name is and he wrote George Carlsen. I am trying to find out if the name is Joseph or George so I can proceed with my search for my Grandfather. I also found my father on the 1930 census with his mother but they are living with a stepfather at that time. However, it says on there that my father's birth father was in fact born in Denmark. Any help would be much appreciated!!

If anyone knows their children and/or grandchildren- please pass this request onto them. Arthur and Lucille are buried in a National Cemetery in Virginia(i think Quantico)- as Arthur spent most of his life in the Navy. My mother- Bea..aka... Blessing...was the only sibling of Arthur's- and she passed away shortly before he did- as well as their father..(Adler). My siblings met Arthur on just a few occasions when we were kids- but never met his children. I'd love to share family info with them. Thank you for your help.
I have an Alfred W. Carlsen born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1840. He came to the U.S. and married Isabella Fleming in the 1860. They lived in Brooklyn, NY. Do you see any connection here? Thanks. janielle@optonline.net

C. F. Carlsen, Civil War Sailor on the Hunley

Carlsen was one of the crew of the submarine Hunley that was lost after sinking the steam sloop USS Housatonic.

I've just completed a section on our web-site related to the submarine Hunley. (see
http://www.pddoc.com/skedaddle/026a/name_to_page_index.htm )

Two of the pages show Carlsen as one of ill-fated crew of the Hunley.

All of the material is public domain material mostly from the 19th century with some from the early 20th century.

Hi Debbie,

My grandfather was Richard Carlson the actor (creature from the black lagoon, etc). His son Chris Carlson was my father, he passed away last year of a sudden heart attack. I am now trying to find as much info as I can from the Carlson side of my family. Have you found any more information since you last posted this, if you are even still checking this? If anyone else has any information for me that would also be wonderful!

Regards, Katherine (Carlson) Watler

Thanks for replying to the post. I did try to email you but not sure if it went thur. Doris is her Grandmother and still very much alive. I am not sure if Marcia wants to know about us but if she does I would be more than happy to fill her in and will answer any question she would like to ask me, to the best of my ability. Again thanks for the reply...

I think I know the Marcia that you are looking for. Her grandmother name is Doris. I think that is all she knows about that side of her father's family. Is her grandmother still alive? I will pass on the information to her that you are looking for her.
