Bonnie

Your great-grandparents, Malcolm (b. May 1861-Sweden) & Matilda (b. Sep 1859-Sweden) CARLSON resided in Kane Borough, McKean County, Pennsylvania, according to the 1900 Census taken on 6 Jun. They had five children listed in their household: Albert (b. Apr 1890-PA), Alice (b. Sep 1893-PA), Esther (b. Jan 1896-PA), Ernest (b. Jan 1898-PA), & a baby daughter un-named (b. Mar 1900-PA). Matilda states that she has had a total of 6 children with 5 surviving.

In 1910, Malcolm & Tilda CARLSON are residents of Jamestown, this census states that they were married in 1888, that Tilda has had a total of 7 children with 5 surviving, their children are listed as Alice, Esther, Ernest, & Namie, a daughter (b.1903-PA). The eldest Albert is not listed with the family, being age 20, he is probably one of the two “boarders“ residing in Jamestown, however the birth states are not correct on either one. The one less child appears to be the infant daughter

In 1920, Malcolm & Matilda CARLSON still resided in Jamestown, their children, Ester C., Ernest, Namie, & a daughter Violet (b.1916-NY). Their daughter Alice is the w/o Ben A. JOHNSON (b.1891-Sweden) and have a daughter Margaret (b.1916-NY)

1930, Malcolm & Matilda CARLSON still reside in Jamestown, only one child is listed with them, Violet is listed here as their granddaughter. Alice & her husband have an additional child, a son Curtiss (b.1927-NY).

In 1930, Albert is apparently still un-married.

In 1930 Ernest is married to Viola (b.1903-NY) with 2 children, Marylin (b.1924-NY) & Irving (b.1927-NY)

1930 in Falconer, Ellicott Twp, Chautauqua County, New York is a listing for Albert (b.1883-Sweden) & Myrtie (b.1888-NY) WEDBERG and their daughter Doris (your mother b.1919-NY). This fixes your grandmother Esther’s death to approximately 1922.
Esther / Ester was accounted for in the 1920 census, but no Doris (b.1919-NY) was listed in the same household, where was she, only Violet is listed, possibly your mother‘s sister, a mystery still remains ?

The reference to Janice NAGAL of Jamestown as being Doris’ second cousin.
(1) There is no NAGAL family listed in 1930, only NAGLE, but no Janice.
(2) There is no NAGAL or NAGLE family listed in 1920, again no Janice.

Bill Watson
Anders P. Carlson and Anna Lovisa Bjorkander, Brooklyn, NY, 1893-1900

Tailor Anders Peter Carlson, born in Sweden, married Anna Lovisa Bjorkander [b. 1852, Hassle, Sweden] , his third wife, Nov. 9, 1893 in Brooklyn, NY and lived at 496 Warren Street. By 1900, he p["Andrew"] is listed as "widowed" living at another Warren Street address. We seek to know when Anna died and if the two had any children. We have checked Kings County and Manhattan Death Indices and death indices at Ancestry, and see no Anna or Lovisa Carlson whose age matches, tho perhaps her age was put down incorrectly on the death certificate. We also wonder if maybe there could have been a divorce since the death information so far does not match. [In case it helps, Anders P.Carlson was teh son of Carl Danieleon and Maria Jonsdotter in Sweden. Please see Caroline Bjorkander Family Tree at Ancestry.com. ] Thanks for any good thinking about how to get around this Carlson brick wall. We would especially love to know of any children. Blessed be. Jeannie

I am looking for my grandfather, Roy Depew's cousins Constance G Carlson b. 1921 and Jacqueline M Carlson b. 1923. They were the daughters of Carl A Carlson and Adaline. I don't know her maiden name. I know that they divorced. In 1930 I found Carl living with my great grandparents, Hubert and Ollie Depew, Ollie was his sister. Adaline living in a boarding house, and the girls living with Thomas and Elizabeth Russell. All were in the Seattle area. Adaline remarried, to Drell Leedy, going by a picture in an album from the 1960's. But I have no idea what happened to the girls.

I spent a couple of hours going over old photo albums last night and found a couple of interetsing things. My GGrandpa had what I thought was a friend in Phili PA. When I put the pics of them at about the same time together, there is a marked resemblence. I know he had a half sister, Emma Erikson. But now I wonder if this Charles Franzen is also a half brother, or at least a 1st cousin. In a census I found, Charles lists himself as Russian. My grandfathers papers, accordiing to family lore, say he was Russian, but after he lists as Finnish or Swedish. On the line where were you born, this Charles had listed Oland/Aland, it is crossed out and Rus. printed above it. So, back to my question, how do I research Aland stuff?
Hello
Don't know if we connect or not, but would like to know how I research a ancestor from Aland Island. My great great grandfather, Ernest C W Carlson was born there in 1867 or so the records say. He came to the US in about 1887. I don't know thru what port. I have a pic of him in Phildelphia in 1889, then he settled in the Seattle area. The only other thing I know about him is his fathers name, Carl Agustus Carlson.

Hi Ladonna,

I am the daughter of Jim Harvill, son of Mariam Wallace, daughter of Alice Easter Sandine, daughter of John Sandine & Selma Josephine Carlson.

I found the Cleveland County Herald obituary for Selma here: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ar/cleveland/obits/1924obit.tx...

There are two separate listings, both near the end of the page. Evidently she spent about a year in Chicago..? Regardless, I recently moved from AR to KS. I live in Manhattan, KS - about two hours away from Kansas City, MO. I'm trying to figure out when I can go, and where I ought to put in my time. :)

I don't recall her very much from my youth, but I had the opportunity to visit Aunt Ellen Rothwell both in the hospital and in the nursing home in Northwest Arkansas while she was staying there. She was a treasure, and she will certainly be missed.

I hope it's okay, I'm going to send you an email as well!
-Jamie Harvill

This is in reference to John & Selma Sandine, My father was the son of John & Selma, his name was Clarence Robert Sandine. I have been searching for sometime about his family, I know his mother Selma died shortly after my dad was born, and father (John) died aprrox. 6 years later. there were 9 children to this family. The last survior of John & Selma recently died July 14, 2009, her name was Ellen Rothwell, Fordyce, Ar. Please reply if you think we are talking about same family. John came from Sweden and Selma was actually born in Kansas City, Mo. but her mother was from Sweden. She had sister named Alma, and brother named Gus. That was about all I have found out. waiting to hear from you LaDonna Davis 162 Bob Davis Rd., Stuttgart, Ar 72160 brooksdavis@d-c1.com 870-673-1888

Nils Oskar Adolph Karlsson - Gothenberg, Sweden

Nils Oskar Adolph Karlsson was a seaman, born in Gothberg Sweden on Nov 5, 1898. According to his citizenship papers he immigrated to the US in 1920, on the ship SS Miami, departing from Havanna Cuba, arriving in Key West Florida. He also had a tattoo on his right arm of a lady. I have his death certificate which states that he died in wilmington, california in 1959. He was married to my great grandmother Lou Marie Arce between 1942 & 1944. This was my great grandmother's second marriage, as Nils and Lou never had any children of their own. I was also told that he left Sweden at the age of 16/17 and never returned home. Recently, I was also told that he had one sister whom died back in Sweden, dates unknown. Also According to his death certificate his father was unknown and his mother's name or maiden name was Matilda, they were both born in Sweden. I have a couple of pictures of Nils if you think this may be a relative of yours! I also have a group photo of what looks like an all boys school of some kind. The photo has the name lenberg written on the bottom. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am still working on connecting my Carlson lines, but I asked for help with Emibas lookup and lots of other help here on this board. I first searched all through many posts to see if I recognized any names and then asked for help and lookups etc. I also found help at http://genforum.genealogy.com/sweden/
they also help and will do the lookups too. I now am searching at Genline, but couldn't do that until I got help here. You need names and dates. Hope that helps.

Three Carlson brothers came to US in 1905-1906 time frame from Timrå Västernorrland Län. They were likely born in Savar, but their father, Karl Jonas Karlsson, moved around alot. These brothers were Karl Gustaf, b. 24 Feb 1886, Erik Oskar, b 12 May 1887, and Magnus, b. May 15 1889. Specified destination of two of the 3 was Joliet, IL. They likely had family there since their aunts and uncles immigrated to America starting in the 1880's, with at least some of them going to Joliet. Nothing is know of them after their arrival in America. Am looking for info on any and all of this family. I have information on their aunts and uncles, and their children.... These aunts and uncles, unlike their father, used the grandfathers name, Ekstrom when they immigrated, and when they arrived in the US.

Hi Michelle -

Ok, I took a look at the photo, but beyond your guesses, all I can add would be that it looks like there is a name written at the bottom which might be Simon (??) Lenberg. Lenberg looks like another Swedish "nature name" - berg means mountain, len means soft or smooth. Not much help, I'm afraid.

Regards -

Mark Johnaon

Hi Michelle -

I probably can't help with the photo, I'm afraid. However, as far as Matilda's name goes, I can explain. Most Swedes up until the last years of the 19th century used patronymic names, made from the father's first name + (usually) a possessive "s" + "son" for the boys or "dotter" for the girls. The word son in Swedish means the same as it does in English; the word dotter means daughter. So the son of someone named Sven Nilsson might be named Anders Svensson, while a daughter might be Matilda Svensdotter. If Anders in turn had children, their last names under this system would be Andersson and Andersdotter (this is the typical exception: where the first name ends in "s", the possessive "s" is omitted).

In some cases, people adopted surnames in place of or in addition to patronymic names. Typically, this happened among certain social groups, such as artisans and craftsmen. This also happened earlier in the cities than in rural areas. Wahlgren is a typical Swedish "nature name" made from two words val (older spelling could be wal or wahl) and gren. Val means whale and gren means branch (as in tree branch). The names usually don't make sense; they were just put together by what sounded good together.

Carlsson would be Matilda's married name. Swedish women generally didn't change their names when they got married (although some in the cities and higher social classes did) before the turn of the 20th century. Svensdotter would be her patronymic name. Wahlgren is probably an inherited surname, so her father was probably named Sven Wahlgren, but there is an outside chance that she was married previously and adopted the Wahlgren from her previous husband.

Hope this helps -

Mark Johnson

Hi Michelle -

More specifically, she was born in Göteborgs Kristine parish. The death information is a little trickier, since the place recorded is the place where she was registered (with the State church) at the time she died. The actual location of the death is sometimes the same, but not always. It's somewhat similar to the situation with our Social Security Death Index, which records the zip code where the person was last known to reside, which may not be where the death actually occurred. The parish of registration is listed as Borås Caroli here. There is also a Borås Gustav Adolf parish. Borås parish was split into these two in 1939.

Hope this helps -

Mark Johnson

Hi Michelle -

You have it basically right. There are 3 "extra" letters in the Swedish alphabet: ö, ä and å. These sometimes get scrambled in the e-mails, but should be fine when viewed on the message board (at least they look right on my end). One or two details I left out of my previous post. "län" is usually translated as county, but these are not counties in the American sense. The län is the largest administrative subdivision in Sweden, so it is more like an American state. Marbäck and Hasslösa are parishes, which is where most of the records useful for genealogy were kept. Göteborgs Kristine and Göteborgs Oskar Fredrik are parishes in the city of Göteborg, Sweden's second-largest city.

If you have any other questions about these records, please ask me. I know there are some Swedish words that are untranslated on the English version of the CD, so if you are unsure about any of these, just ask.

Mark Johnson

Hello Harvey,

I have heard of you many times from my mother, Lois Thomas Westover. I, too, am looking for family information. I went to the Swedish Institute in Minneapolis in hopes that they could provide me with some guidance on Swedish immigrants. They directed me to the Mormon site. All I can find there is evidence of the marriage of Alfred and Elvira (although in the funeral book for Alfred that I have Elvira's last name is spelled HALLMAN). I wonder if a Facebook account might help? I belong to a Westover's of the World Unite group there for similar reasons.

Please feel free to contact me by email and I will provide you with address and phone that way!

I think that victor granfors was my grandfathers younger brother. His name was changed to Carlson when he came to this country. He was born in ylimarkhu, vasa, finland in 1881. He married a Katherine johnson who was also born in the same place in 1889. I am trying to search back through the family history website to check on specifics. I would appreciate any more information you would have. Thanke
