CARNACK, GILMORE, SWINDELL

Searching for: Mrs. JOHN CARMACK and/or OPAL M. GILMORE and/or MAXINE GILMORE from Baxter Springs, Kansas and/or HARRY EDWARD SWINDELL (b.abt 1926) and/or JOE WESLEY SWINDELL (b.abt1928-29) were born in Picher or Miami Ottawa County(?), Oklahoma.
Maxine Gilmore (b.abt1908) from Baxter Springs, Kansas and William Ralph Swindell (b.1897-GA) married on March 22, 1926 in Gerard, Kansas. They lived in and around Picher and Miami, Oklahoma while her husband William Ralph Swindell was working in Mining Operations in the areas around Joplin, Missouri with their children. They were divorced (“abandonment”) in 1929-30 in Ottawa, County, Oklahoma and their children (Harry Edward age 3 years and Joe Wesley age 9 months) custody and care were awarded to Maxine (Gilmore) Swindell. William Ralph Swindell apparently had moved on as he elected not to appear in court and sent a certified letter, dated May 8, 1928 from Burke, Idaho to the courts in Ottawa advising that he waivered his right to appear in court. Maxine and her children were believed to have remained in the Picher or Miami Oklahoma area for at least a short time or she and the children may have moved back to her family’s home in Baxter Springs, Kansas.

Information below from Montana, death index, and newspaper obituary archives show the following that could very well be the same William Ralph Swindell discussed above:

Montana Death Index:
Name: William Swindell
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1897
Gender: Male
Death Date: 15 Dec 1950
Death County: Silver Bow
Index Number: SB 7727 Source:
Montana Office of Vital Statistics

__
12/17/1950
Montana Standard
Butte, Montana
RALPH Swindell
Ralph Swindell. 53. died suddenly
Saturday morning while at work in
a stope on the 3200-foot level of
the Leonard mine. Coroner R. E.
Sayatovic said death apparently was
due to a heart condition, although
an autopsy will be performed.
Mr. Swindell had lived at 257
East Park.
The body Is In Duggan's Merrill
mortuary.

December 22, 1950
Montana Standard
Butte, Montana
WILLIAM R. SWINDELL
The funeral of William Ralph
Swindell was conducted Thursday
afternoon at Duggan's Merrill
mortuary, with the Rev. Dorranee
N. Jensen officiating.
Burial was In the American Legion
plot In Mountain View cemetery,
where officers and members of
Silver Bow post No. 1, American
Legion, held military rites.
The Rev. Mr. Jensen served as
chaplain and Arthur Clark as
bugler. Commander Robert Heckman,
was in charge of -a firing
squad of Hugh Doyle, William Carlson,
Henry Gardner, Jack Wulf and
Pete Johnson. Al Bartle was the
color bearer and Maurice Kiely and
William Hepoia were the color
guards.
Pallbearers were William Hepoln,
Arthur Clark, Henry Gardner, Jack
Wulf, William Carlson and Ervin
Laity.

We are not completely satisfied that the Montana Death Index and Obituaries published in the Montana Newspaper “Montana Standard” in Butte, Montano is the same person as the William Ralph Swindell that was married to Maxine Gilmore and the father of Harry Edward Swindell and Joe Wesley Swindell in Ottawa, Oklahoma in 1926 through 1929-30.

Any help in location any descendants of Maxine Gilmore Swindell, Harry Edward Swindell, Joe Wesley Swindell or any of her family, (parents, grandparents, relatives, etc.) could be very helpful in helping us to locate Maxine Gilmore and William Ralph Swindell’s children and their descendants.

Any help will be appreciated and thanks for reading this posting.
Pam,
I descend from John Wesley Carmack, but through another son,
John Wilson. I have the Savage line only back to James (1789) and wife, Mary Stephens.

I do have our Carmack line direct back to Cornelius of 1681.

Regarding your line up to Lettie Harriet, I have only 'names'
no dates for Elizabeth REbecca's family, but nothing at all
beneath those. I would be glad to share with you....do you
think you could provide me with names/dates/places of Elizabeth Rebecca's family on down to you ? Thanks dear.
I live in Austin, TX..where you? write me at lonzoc@sbcglobal.net , ok ? Norm Carmack

My grandmother was Lillie M Hurley daughter of Elizabeth Rebecca Savage Hurley - daughter of John T Savage and Lettice H Carmack. I think that this is the same line as you and I would be very interested in any information that you have. I have very little info on the Savage line. The Carmack line gets a little confusing with all the Cornelius'. I have no info on the Carr other than Susannah.
Thanks
Pam

That is correct ... my mother is Marijean Carmack, d/o Reno; my father is a Balding. The only male Carmack descendent of John Wesley Carmack is a son of Bruce's (my cousin). However, for privacy, I'll leave his details out. John Wesley's other two sons did not have children.

Very good research. I'll incorporate it into my tree.

I am a male descendent of Simpson Carmack, through his son John Wesley (my gr-grandfather).
Amanda,

Most Carmacks seem to be from TN and not AL. That should be a start. My Carmack is from AL as well, however I don't know of a connection, at least first line connection. It seems that my lineage can be traced back to one John Carmack that is believed to be born in about 1694 probably in Scotland.

Good Luck

Vickie,

My g-grandfather was Jesse W. Carmack, last child of Simpson and Mary (Henry) Carmack. Calvin Porter was Simpson's third child. I've just added a new post to the Carmack forum on Simpson, Matilda, Catharine Carmack. The documentation from Matilda's obit and Death Certificate indicate that John Carmack was the father of Simpson, and Catharine's maiden name was White.

I too have a set of carbon copies of Prescott Carmack's work. There are many error in it. I worked with Lester Carmack before his death to document as many descendants of Simpson that he could find. Send me your email address and we can take out of the forum.

Latest update on Simpson B Carmack (1818-1870), Bedford/Fulton Co. Pennsylvania.

I would like everyone that has Simpson as the son of Peter, son of Evan to please remove that connection since I'm sure this false data came from the Carmack Cousins Newsletter or from Prescott Carmack's work. I have never found any offical data to validate it and much to invalidate it.

Simpson shows up in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Pa. Fulton County Dublin Twp Census records.

I have Simpson's family bible and it lists Catharine Carmack, born Feb 24, 1782; Simpson, born Jan 24, 1818; and Mitilda Ann, born Feb 23, 1823. This didn't help me much because Evan Carmack, who had moved to Bedford Co., PA around 1800; had a daughter Catherine which never married and died in 1848. Here is the record from the orphan's court in Bedford county:
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to the Sheriff of Bedford County, Greetings, Whereas, Uriah Rimbey, one of the heirs and legal representatives of Catharine Carmack, late of St. Clair Township, in the County of Bedford, dec. presented a petition to the Orphans Court of said County, setting forth, that your petitioners late Aunt lately died intestate, leaving no ipue, but brothers and sisters and their children to wit, Elizabeth Derrin, residing in Maryland, the Ipue of Jacob Carmack dec. vig. Evan residing in Green County and Samuel, Jacob, Martha intermarried with _____ Otto , and two other daughters names not known, all living in Maryland and Virginia. The ipue of Peter Carmack dec. to wit Abraham, Daniel supposed to be in Ohio, Peter, Rachel intermarried with William Sleck living in Bedford County, Margaret intermarried with John Appleman, and Maria Dobson in Bedfor County, & the children of Elizabeth Rimbey in Bedford County, vig, George Rimbey, Uriah, Louisa, Catharine Baylor, & Mary Ann. The Ipue of Mary Hann dec, vig, Philip, Benjamin, Hugh, William, and one daughter supposed to be Margaret, all living in Maryland. Ipue of Margaret Murphy dec., vig, Joshua, William, and Elizabeth, living in Maryland. and the ipue of Sarah Grimes dec. vig, John living in Ohio & Martin, Elizabeth, Mary and one other daughter whose name is not known, all living in Maryland. And that the said intestate died seized in her demesne as of fee of and in the following described Real Estate situate in the said County, ......
It indicates that she has no children and lists all of the families of her brothers and sisters. Simpson is not listed as a son of Peter, even though he lived in Bedford Co./Fulton Co. his entire life.

I found this internet hit on Matilda Carmack:
Reference; HISTORY OF HARDIN CO., OHIO, WARNER, BEERS & CO., 1883
IRVIN S. BAKER, farmer, P. O. Larue, is a native of this county, and was born December 25, 1846. He is a son of Joseph and Matilda (Carmack) Baker, both natives of Pennsylvania and of German parentage. This struck my interest because Baker was a local name in Dublin Twp., Bedford County about that time. I did some checking and found a very close neighbor of Simpson in the 1850 census, a Nathan Baker. From the History of Bedford, Somerset, and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania, 1884
"Nathan Baker, a native of Chester County, moved to Dublin township in 1818. After renting farms for fifteen years, he purchased two hundred and twenty acres of land, settled by James Justice in 1795. Mr. Baker married Barbara Hause, of Chester County, in 1820. Children: Jesse, John, Benjamin, and Joseph, deceased; Hannah (Stellinger), Samuel, William, Betsey (Henry), Nathan, and Isaac, living."
The obituary below shows that this Matilda Ward is indeed the same Mitilda from Bedord Co. PA. Joseph Baker, her first husband, was the son of Nathan Baker and Barbara Hause of Bedford Co. PA. Fulton County separated from Bedford Co. in 1850.
From the 1860 Dudley Twp, Hardin county, OH census:
Thomas Ward, age 60 born in England
Matilda Ward, age 37 born in PA
Azabella Ward (?) age 15 born in OH
Irvin S Baker, age 13, born in OH
Portius W Baker, age 11, born in OH
Ida Francis Ward, age 1 born in OH
Catherine Carmack, age 78, born in MD

The birth years match exactly for Matilda and Catharine.

More research on Matilda Carmack turned up her obituary:
Reference; The Kenton Daily Democrat, Monday, April 6, 1914
Dawn of Sabbath - Brought Peack and Happiness To Grand-Mother Ward - Who Lived To Enjoy Fullness of Christian Life
Sunday morning there dawned the day that brought peace and rest to Mrs. Matilda Ann Ward, for the tired spirit of the gentle, kind and venerable woman quiely returned to its maker. Death occurred at the home of her grand daughter, Mrs. E. L. Slagle on N. Main St. After an illness of eleven weeks, brought on by a broken arm resulting from a fall, she welcomed the call of her Maker and was happy in the thought of going home.
Her beautiful Christian life will be an inspiration to countless friends who while realizing that she would not much longer be of this world, feel none the less the sad blow of her death. Her unimpaired mental faculties at the age of 91 years seem a fitting reward for her cheerfulness and sweet patience, and her kindly consideration for others. She was a member of the 1st M E Church of this city and while her health permitted had been an earnst and devoted church worker.
She was one of the oldest residents of Kenton and was beloved by all who knew her. In the loss of her companship those who loved her will miss her and will ever cherish her in their memory.
Mrs. Ward was born in Shirley, Pa., in Jan 26, 1823. She was the daughter of John and Catharine Carmack and was early the comfort of a widowed mother. In 1842 she was united in marriage of Joseph Baker, and coming to Hardin Counth resided here until his death. The children were born to union, Mrs. W A Potter, of Jeffers, Minn., P W Baker, of east of the city, and I S Baker of Kenton. In 1850 she was married to Thomas Ward and since his death she has made her home in Kenton. Of four daughters born to them, two survive, Mrs. W W Holland and Mrs. C C Biddle both of this city.
The furneral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter Mrs. W W Holland of North Market St. Rev W McK Brackney will have charge of services. Burial will be made in Grove Cemetery. Friends are requested not to send flowers.

Reference; Certificate of Death
b- 1/26/1823
d- 4/5/1914 aged 91 yrs 2 mos 9 days
Birthplace- Penna
Father- Jno Carmack b- Md
Mother- Catharine White b- Md
cause of death- septic & General Failure following a fall.

The 1830 Pa. Bedford Co. Dublin Twp lists Catharine Carmack as head of household. This would indicate that John Carmack would have died between 1823-1830. John Carmack should show up in the 1820 PA Census, since census records indicate that Simpson and Matilda were both born in PA. I have no found this census record. We also need a John Carmack, born about 1775 give or take 5 years. I haven't found a candidate for this either. With the tie in to Susannah I initially thought that Catharine may have been her sister and her children were illegimate. Matilda's death certificate would indicate that this is not the case. A DNA test by a male descendant of Simpson Carmack would prove if he was descendant of Cornelius Carmack or not.

William Henry Carmack

In trying to properly source my tree, I have a question regarding William Henry Carmack.

Why does he not appear on the 1850 Census of Dublin, Fulton Co, PA along with his father (Simpson), mother (Mary) and two younger brothers (Samuel and Calvin)?

I have him being born in 1843 and should be there.

Obviously there are enough people here to verify he is indeed real. But I'm trying to get something that ties him to his father Simpson.

Cheers,

Jeff Balding
Arlington, VA

E. W. Carmack, Ex-Senator killed in street duel

Appears in "The Ravia Herald" 14 November 1908, Ravia, Johnston County, Oklahoma

Ex-Senator E. W. Carmack was killed in a street duel at Nashville, Tennessee, Monday evening by Robin Cooper, a young lawyer of that city. The trouble was over personal politics. Since his defeat for the Democratic nomination for governor of Tennessee. Mr. Carmack has been editor of the Nashville Tennessean, and it was some of his warm political editorials that brought on the trouble. Young Cooper was not justifiable in killing Senator Carmack, nor did the editorial in question call for blood. Human life is held entirely too cheap.

Hi Greg! I'll bet we're pretty near cousins if your family is from Owsley. My grandmother was born in Owsley County on the right fork of Buffalo Creek. I think it's right fork. Anyhow, I've been there. My grandma was Maude Carmack, her father was James Martin Carmack, her grandfather was Levi Carmack. We come from the line of Cornelius and Gwen.
