Hi, would you happen to have information about Dr Francis Carn who married Mary Ann Hall b 1825? Mary Ann was from Leon Co Fl, and had a twin sister, Elizabeth Ann, who married Dr. Henry Vann. Their parents were William Hall and Jane Adams, who married in Tattnall Co Ga in 1805, moved to Leon Fl about 1824. I am trying to find out who William Hall's parents were. He may have been born in Maryland about 1781, give or take a few years.

I am descended from Lewis J. Carn as well. I have quite a bit of information on both the Carn and Strobel families from my research of them in 2004 if you are interested. I am descended from a Carn that moved from Orangeburg, SC to Butler Co., Alabama, in roughly the 1840-50s. Please let me know if you are still interested.

It took a bit to narrow it down since 3 of the Carn brothers were doctors. David's father Dr. Francis Elvin Carn, b. 1822 Orangeburg District,S.C. married 7 April l847 to Georgia native, Mary Ann Hall. Don't know who Mary Ann's parents were . David's uncles, Dr. Julius Marcellus Carn Dr. Lewis M. Carn both served as Surgeons in the 3rd Fla. Inf. Regt. C.S.A. but at differnt times. David's father, Dr. Francis Elvin Carn was one of 4 sons 5 daughters of David E. Carn his wife, Martha Connor, both of Orangeburg District who had moved their family to Leon Co. Fla. in the late l840's. You my wife are multiple cousins, she is related to both David E. Carn Martha Connor. Will come up with some dates more generations for you.

Children of David E. Carn Census Records

Hi again, as you probably already know ages on census records not always even close. Also an infant child having siblings who are already adults not too unusual atleast in the l800's. Maxine's mother b. l908 had an older sister who was already married by the time she was born referred to her sister as "Aunt Miriam" all her life.
These are the children of David E. Carn Martha Connor:
l. Caroline Carn b. ca. l825 married Edward Easterling they remained in S.C.
2. Francis E. Carn , yours , already married by l850 census so not listed in parents family.
3. David Carn b. l828 shown in census as farmer age 22, he later married a Miss Mc Millan.
4. Martha Edna Carn b. l832, shown in census as Martha age l8, she later married Morgan Gramling from the Gramlings of Orangeburg who went to Leon Co. Fl.
5. Lavinia Carn b.l835 shown in census as Carrissia age l6. she later married William Johnson.
6. Elvira Carn b. l836 shown in the census as Eliza age l5. she later married Blany Johnson since you show a marriage of an Eliza Carn in l850, could be her name actually was Eliza.
7. Lewis M. Carn b. l838 shown as Mac age l2 in census. Lewis also was a doctor.
8. Emma Carn b. ca. l847 not shown in the census at all, she later married William White.
9. Julius Marcellus Carn b. 5 Aug l845 d. 3 Aug l9ll shown on census as Julius age l. He later married Laura E. Braswell b. 8 Nov l852 d. 24 Mar l9l5 both buried in Leon Co. with two of their young children. Julius was also a doctor also for a time was Postmaster of Centerville, Fl.

Just saw your msg from Hall msg board, thanks for the info, interesting. In David's service papers, did it give his unit? If so would like to know that. Sad to hear he was so serious, could come from his Connor blood. Cousins Sam Shuler of Bowman, S.C. (your Carn cousin, Maxine's Dantzler-Dantzler-Shuler cousin) goes to church with many of the Connors. He says the Connor face wasn't made for smiling. Glad none of this rubbed off on Maxine, she's just the opposite. One set of Sam Shuler's GGPs also had moved to Leon Co. lived next door to Morgan Gramlings parents near Centerville. When the father, Jessie Dantzler drowned in l85l his widow children returned to S.C. Will continue more on your family lines in next msg.

Except for working a few hours it should be an easy weekend. Last weekend was hectic, can't even remember what all we did Saturday but it was busy! Sunday the visiting Priest at our church (Episcopalian) ended up being an old classmate of mine from Georgia Military Academy back in the 50's. Later we got dressed up and took part in the Confederate Memorial Services at the Melbourne Cem. I was part of the Color Guard one of the readers. They asked those there to stand if they had relatives who served from that state when we called off the ancestor list, poor Maxine had to remain standing for 11 of the 12 states called off the lists read. After that Maxine I went to visit a friend in a local nursing home, everyone there loved her period dress with its big hoop skirt by then my wool uniform was getting rather warm . It was tireing but still enjoyable.

None of the Carn researchers are sure of who the father of David E. Carn was, just alot of guessing.
He has to be a son of one of the six Carn brothers, Phillip, John Frederick, Daniel, Lewis, David or Thomas J. Carn.
Phillip married had 3 known children
John Frederick married had 5 known children of which two of them married Martha's siblings that was Lewis A. Carn to Mary Ann Connor Mrs. Elizabeth (Carn) Rhode to John Connor.
Daniel married had 8 known children.
Lewis we don't know if he married or not
David we don't know if he married or not. But if he did it would seem he would have a son named David.
Thomas J. married his cousin, Elizabeth Strobel, l known son, Col. Merrick Ezra Carn, former Lt. Gov. of S.C. Signer of the Ordinance of Seccession.

David has to be a son of one of the above, there was only one Carn family in Orangeburg District.

Lewis J. Carn b. ca. l720 Germany d. unk. married Catherine Elizabeth Strobel b. Lampertheim, Germany 24 June l724 d. 28 Oct l797, she came to S.C. in l732 with 2 brothers l lst cousin. l0 years later her brother Daniel Strobel arrived in S.C.
Lewis J. Carn (parents unk) Catherine Elizabeth Strobel married l742 had 9 children.
Phillip
Catherine = Jacob Bowman
John Frederick
Daniel
Mary Elizabeth
Elizabeth Barbara=lst, Jacob Dantzler (Maxine's 2 lines) =2nd, William Murchey =3rd, Christian Rhode. She had l0 children by lst husband 5 children by 2nd husband.
Lewis
David
Thomas

Next msg will continue Strobel line.

I guess you have read thru all these Carn messages by now. Over the years have corresponded with a number of cousins who have Carn lines , some of the two Carn lines, none of them are sure who David's father was, just know it was one of the sons of Lewis J. Carn Catherine Elizabeth Strobel. Since most of them don't descend from David E. Carn's line they aren't as concerned about it as y'all are.
Besides you two, the only other person I know of who descends from David's line is Peggy Easterling Miller, who descends from David Martha's eldest child, Caroline Carn who remained in S.C. married Edward Easterling.
Would be interested to know your line from David E. Carn down to you, in what state are you located?

I guess you both have to go thru the widow pension records again see which widows are listed. You know it's quite possible that both David H. David W. served in the same company. Units were made up of a local area so many relatives served in the same unit. In the unit Maxine's GGF Rast served in, l6 of the members were his cousins. Two of his brothers (Rast) served in the same company with a number of cousins. So you might find that both David's served served in the same unit, for both of you I hope you are both right.

Jacque,
I know your message wasn't addressed to me but I'll try to explain the P.S. anyway.
Your Carn family came from Germany, that all the family researchers are sure of.
In the l700's there was a Mr. Carne ( I forget his lst name at the moment) who in his will left every thing to his brother in England. This Mr. Carne is the closest name to y'alls Lewis J. Carn that we can find. It is sort of like the name Livingston. In Charleston were English Livingstons in Orangeburg, German Livingstons with no family connection between them.
Clans in Scotland are made up of three groups. 1st is the immediate family of the Chief of the Clan.
2nd are the descendants of younger sons of previous Clan Chiefs (group l 2 carry the same surname)
3rd are the Septs, these are smaller families that were never big enough to form their own clan. They live on lands owned by the clan are protected by the Chief they are expected to serve with the Chief when he goes to war with another clan. The Sept families rarely have any bloodties to the Chief's family. And like you say, some of the Septs of the Lamont Clan are Lamb, Turner, Brown, Black, White, a few other families.
Hope this is somewhat of a help.

Rosemary,
Good to hear from yet another of my wife's many many cousins.
No family researcher is any closer to learning anything more about Lewis than they were over l00 years ago. We know he was born in Germany about l720, came to the colony of S.C. and about l742 married Catherine Elizabeth Strobel.
It was Catherine Elizabeth, her siblings parents who were born in Lampertheim. Sometimes you see the spelling Lambertheim, but if you look on the map of Germany it is Lampertheim.
The lst mention (besides records) I've seen of Lewis is in an account of Major John Strobel of Spartanburg, b. l799 that he wrote for his daughters concerning his father Daniel, uncle Albert, grandfather, Johann Casper Strobel Jr., grand uncle Daniel during the Rev. war. He mentions Johann's sister, Catherine Elizabeth marrying L.J. Carn. (Maj. John Strobel's lst wife, Barbara Dantzler was a desc. of L.J. Carn C.E. Strobel).
Would be interested in knowing your line of desc. from Lewis J. Carn Catherine Elizabeth Strobel.
I guess if you have read the earlier msgs. you know my wife descends twice from them, both times thru their daughter Elizabeth Barbara Carn her lst husband Jacob Dantzler.

Rosemary,
Thanks for the info on how you descend from L.J.Carn C.E. Strobel. I glanced thru the Shuler history reread about your mom her ancestors.
You Maxine (my wife) are Carn-Carn-Shuler-Shuler-Horger cousins.
Maxine's lines:
lst
Sister of your John Frederick, Elizabeth Barbara Carn lst husband, Jacob Dantzler.
Their son, Frederick Dantzler = Mary Ann Catherine Moorer.
Their daughter, Martha Dantzler = Jacob Rast
Their son, Francis Marion Rast = Harriet Elizabeth Connor
Their son, Lucius Bellinger Rast = Lousia Virginia Owens of Hampton Co.
Their daughter, Myrtle Blanche Rast = Frank Lee Odis Lance of Ga.
Their daughter, Maxine.

2nd
Elizabeth Barbara Carn = Jacob Dantzler (again)
Their dau., Elizabeth Dantzler = Lewis Hayne Shuler I
Their dau., Sophia Shuler = Jacob Connor.
Their dau. Harriet Elizabeth Connor = Francis Marion Rast, her 2nd cousin Dantzler 4th cousin Moorer.
Their son. Lucius Bellinger Rast = Lousia Virginia Owens.
Their dau., Myrtle Blanche Rast = F.L.O. Lance
Their dau., Maxine.

Like your Brown Rufus Shuler, the F.M. Rast family lived in Providence.
Two siblings of Maxine's grandfather, Lucius B. Rast, married Shulers. Brother, Frederick Lee Rast married Anna Shuler sister, Martha Elizabeth Rast married Calhoun Glenn Shuler Jr. Calhoun Glenn Shuler Jr. as you most likely know was a nephew of your Brown Rufus Shuler.

Rosemary,
I guess this time of year you see alot of cars in your area with Fla. tags. Quite a number of people we know from church ete. Have summer cabins in your area.
Our daughter-in-law's paternal grandfather spends more time at his cabin in N.C. than he does at his home in Jacksonville.
Alot of Shulers live up in Swain Co. N.C. these are the ones who left Orangeburg early, went to Lexington Co. with some going to Ga. but most going to Swain Co. N.C.
One of Maxine's Lance cousins in north Ga. also ended up being a cousin thru the N.C. Shulers.
One of the members of our local S.C.V. camp has a Strobel line, we knew him for a year before we found out he was family. 5 other members are Maxine's cousins thru her Beaufort Dist. S.C. family lines.

Joy,
Welcome! Always glad to hear from yet another cousin of Maxine's.
Yes, Martha was a dau. of Frederick Dantzler Mary Ann Catherine Moorer. Maybe in my msg. I didn't make that very plain.
I guess you could say the Rasts are my specialty. I've tried to do as much as I can on them since of all Maxine's Orangeburg lines, Rast is the least paid attention to.

Dantzler, son of your Daniel Dantzler Miss Pou.
Ann Barbara's sister, Ann Shuler b. l813 was 2nd wife of James Taylor Rast (her lst cousin once removed), Eldest son of Jacob Rast Martha Dantzler.
Ann Barbara Ann's sister, Sophia Shuler was Maxine's GGGM.
Sophia's only dau. Harriet Elizabeth Connor married Francis Marion Rast (3rd child of above Jacob Rast Martha Dantzler).
So Harriet's aunt Ann was also her sister-in-law.
In the Shuler History some others it shows James as being James P. Rast, in the l850 census records the T does look like a P. But his name actually was James Taylor Rast.
