The following is from my copy of The Surnames of Scotland, Their Origins, Meanding and History by George F Black.

Page 136: Carneil
From the lands of Carneil, near Dumbermline, Fife. One of my best friends of 25 years is a Carneal from Virginia, his ancestors came from Scotland, and settled on the James River not far from Jamestown well before the Revolution. He spells his last name Carneal.

My copy of the Clans, Septs and Highland Reginments of Scotland does not list a sept for the Carneil/Carneals.

Rand,I believe I corresponded with you some years back about the Campbell's in Caroline County, VA, but saw this post while trying out the new mocavo.com genealogy search engine. The information I have in my files for William F. Campbell's maternal grandparents is that they are Andrew Mills and Susan Boxley, both from Louisa County, VA. Have you come across their names since you posted this?

Also, from the Confederate Veteran Widow's Pension application that Fannie filed, she and Robert were married in Frederick Hall, Louisa County, VA.

Vivian Carneal was my grandmother. I stumbled on this posting while searching for her birthday. She married John Paulett, they had 1 daughter Kathy Michelle, my mother. She & Jessie had 3 children, Susan, Patricia, and Kenneth Michael aka "Mickey". I always thought Clarence was her biological father. I also believe the correct spelling for Myrtle's last name is Garthright. I would love to see any info you've collected on these family members. Thanks.

An obit for Charles C. Carneal of Mechanicsville, Virginia, appeared in the Free-Lance Star (6 July 1968). It named the following survivers: wife Myrtle Garthright Carneal; four step-daughters; Mrs. Vivian Toombs, Mrs. Estelle L. Wilmore, Mrs. Bernice M. Carter, Mrs Oddie M. Carneal and a step-son, C. Warren Carneal. If these were step children, who was Myrtle former husband and the father of her children?

Myrtle was the daughter of Albert Warren Garthright and his wife, Florence Estelle Yarbrough. He given name was Alice Myrtle.

Thanks so much for your detailed list. I have been very frustrated with the Carnall/Carneal message board because everyone seems to know everyone to some degree, but there's not enough info for an outsider to know general dates or even locations often. Although I'm interested specifically in the Carnall/Carneals from Todd Co., KY, there is probably a connection somewhere. I would appreciate any of the info you have, including dates. Also, is Jack Fields' son, James Butler a Fields or a Carneal? Thanks for your willingness to share.

Hi Carol, I can't believe I've waited so long to check this message board! I would love to exchange info with you. I go back as far as Henry N. Carnall/Carneal (1 Jun 1823 VA-29 Apr 1875 Muhlenberg Co., KY)m. Virginia F. Hunter (8 Jun 1837 TN - 21 Nov 1906, Todd Co., KY). I have their 12 children and some info on most of them. I descend from William 'Carl' Carnall(20 Dec 1870 Todd Co. - 12 Mar 1952 Muhlenberg Co.)m. abt 1891 Emma Meeker (20 Nov 1869 Warren Co, KY - 11 Apr 1928, Todd Co., KY) There are some interesting stories about their circumstances. Then through their daughter Maggie Lou (28 Apr 1900 Todd Co.- 6 Aug 1968 Muhlenberg Co.) My mother is one of Maggie & Jesse Vincent's twins (Emma Frances & William Franklin). I'm going to try to contact you through your e-mail as well. Mine has changed and we have moved (from Kansas to Texas), so I haven't had the opportunity to research anything in Todd County. Where do you live? Thanks for any help you can give me. My new e-mail is debogiles@hotmail.com

Elizabeth P. Stewart Carnal/Carneal

Looking for husband of Elizabeth Purvis Stewart who married a Carnal. Her parents were Joseph and Ann Stewart. Elizabeth was born in Louisa county, Va., 1788. In her fathers will in 1841 in Lincoln County, Ky., he names his daughter Elizabeth Carnal, with his other children. The reason I believe she may have married a Carnal/ Carneal in Caroline County, Va., is because he (Joseph) bought land from a Daniel Coleman in 1815 in Caroline Co. There are several Carnal/Carneal's in Carolina County Va., in 1810 and 1820, I just don't know which one she may have married, if it was one of them. Her father Joseph was originally from Spotsylvania Co., Va. Any help on this would be appreicated.
Re: Carneal Families from Caroline County,Va

I'm sure it is John J. Carneal and Elizabeth Haines. They are my great great grandparents. Their daughter, Lucy H. Carneal is the mother of my great grandfather James Addison Mills. Joseph Mills was my grandfahter and his son, Carl Mills is my father. My dad talks about Bejamin Franklin Mills but I'm not sure where he fits into the family. I would appreciate any information anyone would like to share.

Jeff,

I was scrolling through these messages and remembered you are related. Here's some good information if you are still doing any genealogy.

George Carnall settled in Todd Co. in August 1820; his brother Elijah Carnall settled in what was Logan until April 1820 when Todd was formed. George was born abt 1756 and Elijah abt 1766 in Virginia. I believe their father was William Carnall and I am in the process of trying to locate a copy of his will in which he leaves land to George & Elijah. Both George and Elijah were in Caroline Co as late as 1800 and both owned land next to each other as reflected in the land records. George was the great grandfather of Joseph Stewart Carneal. George's will leaves his assets to only 5 of his children after his wife Mildred dies but some interesting sources show he had at least 7 children. George died in October 1825 and Mildred died abt 1830. George wasn't a weathly man but Elijah was well off. Elijah died January 1826. There is a Brown- Carneal family cemetery located in Claymore, Todd co. (Brown's are our family also) Alot of the Carneal's and family descendents are buried in this cemetery. I always thought the cemetery across the street from Joseph Stewart Carneal was the original but the one in Claymore appears to be. There are many "creek" stones in this cemetery to mark graves but no headstones for George. Elijah's stone is still readable and so is his wife's Jane Yarbrough. I'm still waiting on my contact in Todd for pictures. Patrick, Joseph's father, settled in sharon Grove where Joseph was born. Joseph fought for the Union in the Civil War along with his brother Carter but Patrick owned slaves he brought from Virginia - he bought the land in Sharon Grove about 1821.
