Anna "Nancy" CARNES, 1810-1891, in Fairfield/Hocking Cos., Ohio

Anna "Nancy" KARNES (spelled CARNES in the family Bible)was born in Virginia on April 24, 1810, but I know nothing about her parents or even if KARNES was her maiden name. She married Daniel KITTSMILLER, April 18, 1829 probably in Fairfield County, Ohio. They lived at Royalton, Ohio until the mid-1830s when they moved to Logan, Ohio. Anna "Nancy" died in Logan on September 3, 1891 and her obituary says that she was the oldest resident of Logan at the time of her death. Daniel and Anna had six children: Elizabeth (1830-1919); Catharine (1831-1913); Benjamin (1833-1913); George W. (1835-1864); Hester Ann (1838-1917); and Mary Ellen (1843-1908).

Daniel's father, Benjamin KITZMILLER, mentions his "grandson," Oliver KARNES, in his will in 1852. I can't find any subsequent record of Oliver.

Can anyone help me identify Anna "Nancy" KARNES?

Would like to establish contact with the family of Robert Oliver Young, born 1907 in Polk County, IA. My mother corresponded over many years with Mr. Young and he sent her many letters and charts with information he said he had gotten from his cousin Elsie Carnes Davis, then deceased. My mother has since died and I have reopened the Carnes file. Mr. Young had said in one of his letters that he had all of the papers of Elsie Carnes Davis and at that time had planned on organizing the file and sending my mother the sources for this deep Carnes file. If anyone in the family is continuing his work, I would be glad to exchange information.

William married Mary A. Sickles who is believed to be descended from Daniel Sickles (book - The General Who Got Away With Murder). I cannot find him before he moved to Pennsylvania and married her. My grandfather was their son Morris. Please respond if you have any information that may link me to his parents, siblings, etc.

Anna "Nancy" CARNES KITTSMILLER, 1810-1891, Ohio

Daniel KITZMILLER (1805-1863) was the son of Benjamin KITZMILLER (1776 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania-1856 in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio) and his wife, Elizabeth, whose surname I don't know yet. Can anyone identify her? Benjamin was the son of Adam KITZMILLER and another Elizabeth whose maiden name is also unknown.

According to their family Bible, Daniel married Anna "Nancy" CARNES (1810 in "Old" Virginia-1891) in 1829 when he was living in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. They moved to Logan, Hocking County, Ohio during the 1830s and Anna died there in 1891. According to her very short obituary, she was the oldest resident of Logan at the time of her death. They are both buried in the Old Cemetery in Logan under the name KITTSMILLER.

My search for Anna has been at a standstill for more than thirty years. Who was she and who were her parents?

Benjamin KITZMILLER mentions a "grandson", Oliver KARNES, in his will in 1856 (Oliver was then living in Bluffton, Indiana and was a shoemaker), and Benjamin's son, John, who lived in Blackford County, Indiana had an R.E. KARNES, aged 22, in his household in 1870. The spelling of the last name was consistently written with a "K", never a "C" and never as KERNS.

Who were these KARNES boys? Were they illegitimate children of Anna CARNES (this is how her surname was spelled in the Bible), her children by a previous marriage, her brothers, or no relation at all which is suggested by the difference in spelling?

Can anyhone help?

Richard Welch
Green Valley, Arizona

Bud Carnes acquitted of charges of assault

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 27 August 1903 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

ACQUITTED OF ASSAULT

Bud Carnes, who lives east of town, was arrested by Deputy Criswell last week and carried before the commissioner at Atoka for assault. It was the outcome of a family row in which, it seems, the boys and the old man of the household were the main participants. During the trial old man Carnes got too gay and the commissioner sent him to jail three days for contempt of court. Bud was acquitted of the charge of assault.

I am looking for information on Henry Carnes who married Lorena Lent Dec. 2, 1842 in Guernsey County, Ohio. Someone on the internet has them as the parents of Hannah Carnes who married first David Priestly, then Martin VanBuren McKim who was my gg-grandfather. She was born in 1844 and died April 25, 1884. Her obit doesn't mention her parents or siblings. I can't find Henry and his wife in any census. I am trying to find documentation that Henry and Lorena are Hannah's parents. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Ancestors of Frederick Carnes of Lancaster, SC

Dawn, some years back Dr. Carnes contacted me by email about my Carnes connections. I believe if not mistaken, that I downloaded and emailed what I had to him. Shortly after that I had a stroke, putting me out of commission for 2 years at the ripe old age of 44. Since then I've continued researching and had forgotten about Dr. Carnes till recently doing follow-up research. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Do you by chance in his notes have anything on Frederick Carnes b. 1740 of Lancaster, SC? I am having trouble finding his father, wife and other ancestors. Any help you or anyone would be greatly appreciated. For others needing assistance, I have amassed in my family tree over 11,900 Carnes and connected families from all over the U.S. and other countries. I would be happy to provide them with assistance if they would contact me.
Marvin Carnes
I am looking for information on SIMON PETER CARNES. He had 3 brothers Shem, John, and Joseph. His mothers maiden name was Sarah Rice. I am unsure of his fathers name but could've been James. Simon was suppossed to have been born in Murray county Georgia in1878 or 1879. I know that he passed away in Athens Tennessee in 1968. I do know that simon married 2 times. 1st wife of all his children was Sarah. After Sarah passed he married Emma. Emma had put on Simons birth certificate that his fathers name was James. We do not knw this as fact. During the time Simon and Sarah had children I know they lived in Lafayette Georgia. If anyone could help with this or give me any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Angie Begley

Carnes in California

hello, I am researching a Carnes family in my family tree. They were living in Vallejo, Solano, California in the mid to late 1950s. Father was Bill (maybe officially William) Carnes, he was unmarried (unknown if widowed or divorced) in the late 50s.. He had a daughter, Alphine Louise Carnes, b. in 1942. I believe her mother's maiden name was Walker. Also a son named Billy (maybe also William), born around 1944 or 1945, I do not know if his mother was the same as his sister's. If any of this rings a bell, or you have any helpful hints, feel free to email me at swim2723@netscape.net (not a .com) or at alicea_lybarger@yahoo.com
Thanks!!

Frederick Carnes

I have been researching my Carnes ancestors for going on 6 years now after recovering from a stoke. So far the majority of my ancestors have been settled in the southern states North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama. Then I found some who moved on to Texas. Also found many of my southern ancestors migrated from Pensylvania. I have traced Frederick Carnes to Lancaster, SC., as being born in 1740 there and that is where I got stumped. Plus a lot of info seems to be crossed between my Carnes line and another Carnes line I have yet to find connection to.

I am finding Frederick had a son Jacob Carnes born 1760 in Lancaster, SC marrying a Mary Patricia (last name not known) and it is also from their children that the information again gets crossed. I am in hopes Dr. Carnes might have some information for me.

dOES ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT ANY THE CARNES MARRYING ARANTS?

My Arant family lived in Lancaster, SC from 1790-1860. Elizabeth Arant and John Arant were married around 1810. They had sons and daughters. I feel that some of their daughters, b.1830-1810's married Carnes. My great-great grandfather, John Arant, Junior lived beside Carnes "Karnes" in 1850-1860's. I wondered why. I remember my grandmother b.1814 saying that some Carnes married into the Arants way back.

I am looking for marriages into Carnes/ARants from 1800-1870. Many thanks

Mrs. Millie CARNES d. 18 September 1913 - Kansas City, MO

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, September 19, 1913

LAST THOUGHT FOR HER BOY.

A tired little woman lay on a white bed at the General Hospital
yesterday afternoon. Her eyes slowly closed and over the calm
face the smile of peace crept.

She was Mrs. Millie CARNES, who was burned in sight of her
9-year-old crippled son in a gasoline explosion at her home,
2518 McGee Street, yesterday.

"Well," said Dr. J. P. OWENS, "her suffering is nearly over."

Just then the woman sat upright in bed. A persistent thought
was clutching at her benumbed brain.

"Frank! My boy!" she gasped.

When the doctor quietly told her the boy was being cared for
by a neighbor, she fell back exhausted. A second time she
sat up in bed.

"Doctor --- my insurance papers --- top drawer --- dresser ---
for Frank."

The voice trailed off. The eyes closed. The mother was dead.

Shortly after the accident, Mrs. CARNES told the hospital
authorities of being deserted by her husband and of her
struggles to care for her boy, who has been a cripple from
babyhood. She said she had kept her insurance paid up for
Frank. Two weeks ago, after a vain search for work, she
attempted to commit suicide that her boy might be provided for.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo5
Francis Carnes

I am looking for a Francis Carnes (male). He was in Pittsburgh, PA around 1830. The family migrated to Hancock Couny, Illinois. He is in the 1850 census. One of his sons is my gg Grandfather. He was known as Jasper Karnes. However, he also was known under Karns, Carnes. I cannot find out why the names were changed for sure. Jasper's son was my Grandfather Marion Eugene Karnes of Iowa and Nebraska. Any info would help. Thank You!
