Also, when you are searching use Kerns and Carnes. If the documents were filled out by someone else then they spelled it the way they heard it

my great great grandfather spelled his name Carns his whole life and it is on his tombstone as Carns but every document filled out by another person (like the census) has it spelled Carnes
