I presume from the research that I have done on Ancestry says that Wolff was married to Laura and was a member of Sherrith Israel in San Francisco. I do not know much more about his family. I am looking for a Dreifuss link in San Franciso. My Great Uncle Leopold was married to Wolff's grand- daughter, Jessie Scheyer.

Ok, I know of a Wolff Caro, but I still find that he is not in our particular tree, he could be a brother of someone or a cousin of someone I don't know, but as far as I can find he is not directly related. If I am wrong, please correct me and let me know who Wolff's siblings were and his parents. Maybe I am just missing him for some strange reason and I'd love to know what part of the family I am missing, if I am. Thanks for the help. Looking forward to hearing from you about Wolff's family. Thanks.

Many Jews and Muslims converted to Catholicism during the 'Spanish Inquisition'.

Otherwise, Jews and and Muslims were either persecuted...and likely execute. Those who did not, left; Mostly to Europe, North Africa or the Middle-East. That is why the 1400s was such a key time for non-Catholics in Spain.

What we must remember is Texas use to be Mexico. So, when people are naming 'This town' Texas...it may well have been 'This town' Mexico at the time of their births...It wasn't until the Texas rebellion that it was no longer part of Mexico...and it did not immediately become a state of the US at that time either.
Sarah Caro [z"l]

My grandmother, Sarah Caro [z"l] was born in Szrensk, a village in Poland although when my grandmother lived there it must have been part of Russia in some respects because my grandmother could speak Russian as well as Polish fluently. And of course Yiddish. She worked in the family business making streimul fur rimmed hats and other clothing items for other Jews. She arrived in the United States as a young woman around 1900 having had her passage paid for by her first cousin, Barnet Isaac [nee, Kuzhborski], also from Szrensk with whom she married and had 5 children, one of whom was my father [z"l]. My grandmother died in 1969 at the age of 95. For reasons I am unclear about, an 's' was added to the family name around 1915 with 'Isaac' being the name of the relatives who sponsored my grandfather when he arrived here. It is for that reason that I know I am related, for example, to William Isaac, former head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. I once did research at Yad VaShem and determined that all my grandfather's relatives had been exterminated by the Nazis. On the other hand, I know little regarding my grandmother's genealogy.

Anything you can tell me about my grandmother would be most welcome.
...More than likely. The Caro/Karo names scattered and took different religious changes also.
.
Due to the Spanish, then Portuguese Inquisition(s), many Jews and Muslims 'converted' (to Roman Catholics). There are many decendents of Spain...from both Jewish and Muslim/Arab roots.
.
Caro/Karo = Jewish
Alcala = Arabic/Muslim
.
Keep in mind also that over seven (7) thousand words attributed to Spanish...are actually 'Arabic' (Pantalon, camisa/algebra/etc.)
.

This question remains the crux of the divide between the three religions (Judism, Christianity, Islam).
.
Jews do not believe that Jesus was ever a 'Christian'. He was always a Jew. It is Christian...the followers of Jesus 'Christ'...that believe a new religion was spawned from Jesus himself.
.
We must remember that there were two roots of Christianity; The Orthodox and The Catholics. Catholics became a 'church' after the conference of Nacia as The Roman Emporer Constantine gathered the followers of Jesus to discuss the 'Creation of one text'. Once they texts and word-of-mouth testimonies (those who 'handed down')...were put together as one book; The Roman Catholic Bible was a compilation of many contributors...some of who were accepted and others who were not included in the text.
.
On the other hand there was still the Orthodox...(e.g., Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox) which followed a different path...and different writings; The Catholic and Orthodox Bibles differ.
.
.
This brings us to another level of the dispute between the three great religions; Judism/Christianity/Islam.
.
All three believe in the same God. the name 'God' is the English version; Jews and Muslims have different names for the same God (e.g., Muslims refer to 'Allah')
.
In countries that speak Arabic...even Christian and Jews say Allah when referring in Arabic. This is much the same as in Spanish; A Jew, A Christian, A Muslim would still refer to God as Dios...'in Spanish'...and otherwise in their own languages.
.
Ever go to church (Catholic, Pentacostal, Jehovah's Witness) and notice that they speak of Dios, not God?!?
.
Now, here come the interesting part; Muslims believe that Jesus was the 'Messiah' and brought the word of God...I told you it woud be interesting - a paradox.
.
.
So Jews believe Jesus was 'not' the Messiah...and are still waiting.
So Christians believe Jesus was the Messiah...and are awaiting the second coming.
So Muslims believe Jesus was the Messian...and that Mohammad was the 'next' messenger of God.
.
.
Why is this so interesting...because going back several thousand years before Jesus...Abraham lived. God's promises were to both Sons of Abraham; Isaac & Ishmael.
.
These two brothers' children intermarried...the decendents of Isaac and the decendents of Ismael are literally the same.
.
Why the bigger question is; Why do we never focus on the other promise...the one to Ishmael.
.
Jews, per se, are the decendents of Isaac.
Muslims, per se, interestingly are the decendents of 'Ishmael.
.
Again, I ask why?... or why not?.
These are the responses of several others who have been conversing with me on the CARO name
.
.
Is your question really:
- "Were they Jewish...as in practicing"
- or "Jewish by descent...which many were...
Keep in mind that they and Muslims were forced to convert by by the Inquisition.
.
Another interesting factoid: many slaves from Africa...were Muslims.
.
.
I have asked the family about any non Christian traditions, like the star of David in a cross. Nothing, I think they were so scare of the Inquisition that they eliminated any traditions that connected them with Jews. I know of 4 converted Jews that went with Cristobal Colon on the first trip to America. I am getting new microfilms about the Church of San Miguel of Guadix, Granada, Spain. They have records from before Colon went to America. Should I assume that if the name Caro doesn’t appear in the books before 1492, they were Jewish?
.
.
I know that there were Jews in Toledo, Spain, actually a great number of them there in the 1400s. When the Spanish Inquisition began in 1492 they had to convert, leave or be burned. The Jews spelled the name Karo which means one who is well versed in scriptures. My impressions are that the converted ones in order to show a change "Christianized" their name and changed the K to a C for Caro which means "beloved". There are Caro families in South America that have the Star of David with a rose in the center on their gravestones. The rose symbolizes "remembrance". Many Karo families of those who left Spain and went to Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and eventually came to Poland. The ones in Poland all died in the Holocaust. When Spain cast out their Jews, Turkey took them in. The Sultan was glad to get them.
From the foundation of the 'Catholic' Bible came the 'other' Christian religions. The most influentual was Martin Luther, a Catholic mind you...who questioned the church of his time. Many other bibles have been written since this time; King James, etc.
.
Remember, Jesus still spoke of the Ten 'Jewish' Commandments...he did not establish a new religion, per se. It was his followers who spread the message that Jesus spoke of. The message had to do with the hypocracy of his fellow Rabbis in the temple. His focus was moving away from the 'institution' of religion that the Temple had become. Much the same message that Martin Luther reiterated about the 'institutional church.
.
Remember that Jesus spoke to "...Wherever two-or-more meet in my name (his message)...that was the truer church.
.
The dispute continues even after two millinia have passed as to was he still a Jew, as a Messiah to bring the message (which has always been the same message of God). He never spoke of Not being a Jew...only that those in the institution (of the Temple..where he prayed)...were hypocritical.
.
Even Jews still see him as a Jew...but, not the Messiah.
.

.
Many 'converted' Jews...practiced in private. Many did not give up their beliefs.
.
Thus, this was the pretext for testing converts...to see if they would do 'Jewish' things or had Jewish possessions (symbols, memorabilia). The fortunate innocent ones were often tortured to death.
.
Similarly, you will find many 'muslim' converts who did much the same thing...eg. names like Alcala, etc.
.

.
When doing searches in the Texas regions...remember that what encompases El Paso County today was once made up of two counties (Including Bexar).
.
Also, research during the 1800s may reveal that some people born in Mexico...were born in Texas, Mexico (which once shared with representatives with another Mexican State...Remember the Alamo, this was part of the pretense for the Mex/Amer War).
.

.
Interesting you mentioned 'Tarahumara' as my Father always spoke of this...and as a kid, he would often try to race with us to show that he too was a tarahumara runner.
.
God rest his soul...I stil miss him and my mother

.
Most Caros grew up with 'national' identities; Spanish, Italian, French, etc. However, they share common Jewish ancesty.
.
How so? During the European Inquisition(s)...including Spains, there were many forced conversions to the Catholic faith.
.
Many who fled Spain to avoid persecution, left as Jews to Italy, France, etc. However, they too were often later converted in their new lands.
.
Those who opted to leave to North Africa and the Middle-East maintained their Jewish Identities.
.
