Classification: Census
Surnames: Carolan, O'Neill, Gliray
Fragments of the 1821 Irish census survive: two Carolan families are recorded in/near Navan town. (Street/house numbers are not provided.) The first is entry no. 580 and refers to Edward Carolan 56, Farmer (2acres) and Huckster, his son Michael 16, son John 14, Ann daughter 20, Mary daughter 12 and Bridget O’Neill his granddaughter. The second family is an entry for Dillonstown townland (close to Navan town) and refers to Andrew Carolan 60 Pensioner (an unusual occupation for the time and place) his wife Catherine 58, daughter Eliza 20 Door servant to Dr Gliray, his brother John 55 and niece Ann 14. None is known to be related to my Carolan ancestors from Grangegeeth about 12 miles away but the information may be of interest to others researching the name.
