Just discovered that John Carolan, husband of Jane Rossiter was born in Dublin, Ireland circa 1818. It appears that he emigrated to Newfoundland where he met and married Jane Rossiter in St. Johns before they moved to Toronto circa 1873. Does anyone have any information on John's parents in Dublin? I have posted information on this family line here:

http://shipmanfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/

Michael

James Carolan married Catherine Murphy

I'm helping my husband on a search for his multiple great-grandparents, James Carolan and Catherine Murphy. We know precious little, but will give you our small cache of facts. James, according to family lore, was a sailing captain in Co. Meath. He and Catherine, and son, Thomas M. Carlin, sailed to New Orleans after 1819, leaving daughters in Ireland. Thomas M. Carlin was born in Ireland 15 Sept 1819. We don't know when either James or Catherine were born, but think it was about 1830. They lived in New Orleans and in Plaquemine Parish LA. Anyone familiar with this family? Thanks...Pat
4pat2341@icnet.net
Carolan, Bulkas, Bamford, Edwards, Moran, Brookes

Hi am looking for info on a Carolan Family from Kilskyre Co. Meath Parents were John Carolan and Alice Davis both died in the 1950's. I am trying to trace their children Doris, Margaret (Peggy), Bridie, Elizabeth (Betty), Shiela,Kathleen,Paddy, John, Oliver, Brian and my grandmother Mary. Unfortunately we have lost contact with the rest of the family apart from Kathleen. Doris was married to a Jonas Bulkas, Bridie to Roy Bamford, Shiela to a man with the surname Edwards and Peggy was married to Tom Moran and then Charlie Brookes. Unfortunately I believe Doris had an affair with Bridie's husband Roy Bamford and there was a split in the family. They all resided in the Manchester area and Peggy lived in Birmingham. If anybody can help me trace this family I would really appreciate it. Regards Lyndsay.

This is probably a long shot, and I don't have a lot of info, but I'm looking for a Mary (or Mary ann) born approx. 1894 in Shercock, Cavan. From what I've heard her family moved to Scotland at some point. Apparently her mother died when she was approx. 11, and at approx. 16 yrs old, she came to Canada. It's said that she had 4 brothers. That's all I know, can't find her in records anywhere, figured I'd post because you had so many marys and hail from the same town... I f anything seems familiar, please get back to me when you have a minute.

My grandmother was Annie Carolan (Carlin) who had brothers named Michael and Martin. There were also two more brothers named Patrick and Thomas and two sisters named Bridget (Beatrice)and Mary. Their parents, Martin and Catherine (Barrett), were the last ones to come over in 1922. The entire family came from Murrivaugh, Mulranny, Co. Mayo and they all settled in Cleveland, OH. There were at least 26 different Carolans from Mulranny that settled in Cleveland.

Carolan of Minnesota and Chicago

I am looking to establish contact with family and locate additional information about my Carolan ancestors.

My 2nd great grandfather, John Carolan (b. abt 1852 in Ireland) came to America circa 1875. He married Julia Carolan (b. abt 1854 in Ireland). While we don't know when John and Julia were married we suspect in was around 1879 in Minnesota.

John and Julia had 3 daughters: Nellie (b. 01 Apr 1881, Minnesota), Lizzie/Elizabeth (b. Jan 1884, Minnesota) and Matie/Mary (b. abt 1879, Minnesota).

John, Julie and their 3 daughters eventually migrated to Chicago where John was a laborer.

All three daughters married (McGinty, Curtis and Luce). While I am able to track John and Julia's daughters after the 1900 Chicago census, I am unable to find John in Julia and any census in Minnesota/Illinois before or after 1900.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Our family history is available at http://www.wheelergenealogy.com.

Thanks,
Bill
Caroline,
We are connected to the Carolan family you have listed. The information we have corresponds with your information except for the last piece. In all the information we have from the three Carolan families who came to Australia there is not one named Laurence.Catherine,Mary Ann and Margaret came into Australia and their brother Michael was a seaman and died in Australia. Margaret married James Scanlan,Mary Ann married William Patterson and Catherine married Patrick Moynihan. Michael never married. I am a descendant of the Scanlan/Carolan union. All of the Carolan girls died at a young age. There are a lot of descendants in Australia mostly living in Queensland. Are you in Australia or overseas. We would be pleased to hear from you.
Regards,
Ken and Pam Scanlan

I am searching for more information on a CAROLAN from Cavan.
I have found that Catherine (Kate) CAROLAN was born approx. 1857. She married a Patrick MOYNIHAN in Australia in 1875. I have found on her death records that her father was Simon CAROLAN(County: Cavan; Parish: Kilinkere; Town: Carrickeeshil) Her mother to be Catherine REILLY (County: Cavan; Parish: Kilinkere; Town: Greagahadossan).

The 1821 Census for Cavan list Catherine REILLY at age 1 and her father as Laurence REILLY age 30 (County: Cavan; Parish: Kilinkere; Town: Lissanymore). Her mother as Bridget REILLY age 26 (County: Cavan; Parish: Kilinkere; Town: Lissanymore) and a sister Daffney aged 2.

Still looking for anyone who has Carolan roots in County Derry. My maternal grandmother grew up just south of Dungiven and I still have relatives who live there. I noticed a previous post that states Carolans were in the cattle business. The occupation listed on the census for my great-grandfather, Denis Carolan, was cattle dealer. His father was Jack Carolan/Carlin, not sure who Denis's mother was. Denis had at least two brothers, Edward and Thomas, and at least two sisters, Susan and Maryanne. Denis married Susan McBride in 1913 at St Patrick's Church in Dungiven.

I'd love to compare notes with anyone who has Carolan roots in or near County Derry.

Heather

Patrick married Mary Doyle on 06/02/1887, Mary was born on 02/05/1865 her parents were John Doyle and Catherine McGuinness. Bernard Bryan married Elizabeth Denvir on 20/06/1896 her parents were William Denvir and Mary King, Elizabet was born on 15/08/1877. I believe that Michael and Edward emigrated to New York and worked as bartenders, I am not sure what happened to Mary and Anne.

On Patrick and Alice's marriage cert Carolan is spelt Carlin and on the birth certs of the children McKew is spelt McCue.

If this information matches with your family I would love to hear from you and share more info.

Regards,
Lyndsay.

I'm still trying to locate information on my grandmother, Julia Carolan. She was born in April of 1872 or 1873. She had an older sister Kate (Catherine or Kathleen). They both emigrated to NYC and became nannies. Julia married a George Andes in NYC sometime in 1899 or 1900. She and Kate had 6-8 siblings (names unknown). They parents could be either Peter and Mary or Phillip and Jane.

Thanks for the information. Julia Carolan, my grandmother, lived in NYC from 1892 to 1906. She had an older sister Catherine/Kathleen who came to NYC the year before her and they both became nannies. Catherine eventually returned to Ireland. Julia's parents names SUPPOSEDLY were Peter and Mary but I have no proof of that; it's only hersay. Keep me posted on what you find from the Nobber Carolans.

Judy in NC

It has been many years since I have posted. I think I know who James Carolan is. I think he is an attorney if I am correct. Did you all live in Alma or close to it.
My hearing impaired brother lives in Fairgrove (Sky) who is always in the Saginaw News. My brother Marc lives in Saginaw. Our mother in Midland. Our father Joseph John was from NYC from the Village and our one cousin Jospeh DeCampo is an attorney there. I went to see the graves at Long Island National Cemetary in New York State and to check on the information that I put up at Ellis Island on behalf of my father. Most of the Carolans are from the Southern part of Ireland and came in different ports along the east coast. I have done allot of research on the family and on my grandmother side she was a Berkery. I have a friend in Michigan who obtain marriages from Ireland and who stood up with them. The Berkery's also came from NYC and some moved to Chicago according to my great aunt in the old days. One day I will give the other information on other names on who's who. The Carolans were famous in Northern California. There is a street outside of the San Franscisco Airport named Carolan. Google it. Then the Carolan manison. Take care. Enjoy the research.

Reposing at residence..." and so on.

Her husband's three sisters and their father are all buried in graves in a NYC cemetery and all of their stones are marked "native of Nobber Parish, County Meath": Julia and her husband are interred with his father, but neither Julia nor her husband is on the gravestone.

What I do not know is how many came or how many stayed behind. Three, including Bernard (1836-1906), moved to the states, possibly others. Those three started out in New Jersey and ended up in Illinois. Where did your family live in the states? Is there a Nobber link? Good luck.

Interesting. Looks like your grandmother was from a generation later than my gg grandmother. But there may be a link. I've been in touch with a Carolan in Ireland who has family in Nobber. He promised to send me whatever he can come up with.
Clinton County, Iowa is interesting, too. I'm in Davenport, Scott County, just south of Clinton Co. A lot of Irish settled in both counties. My Carolans never made it out of central Illinois, about 100 miles south east of here. Maybe they had cousins in Iowa.
My gg grandmother, Julia Carolan, had a brother, Bernard, who came over in 1852. In 1861 he joined the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry and served 4 years in the Civil War. He can be found on a website dedicated to 2nd NJ, and I have some information on him from the Illinois and National Archives.

Thanks,

JD

Bernard Carolan (11/2/1836 - 8/25/1906) emigrated from Nobber, County Meath to Newark, NJ in 1852. He served in Company C, Second New Jersey volunteer infantry, 1861 - 1864, and was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. Following the war he settled in Canton, Illinois in 1867 where he married Mary Josephine Finan and raised seven children.

Bernard's sister, my gg grandmother, Julia Carolan (10/8/1835 - 1/8/1912), also from Nobber, came to US in 1850 with her father, Thomas. They lived five years in Jersey City, NJ before moving to Canton. There she married Michael Daily and had four children. Juia's obit states that she was "the last" of nine children. Nothing is known about anyone except Bernard.

I look forward to comments and questions. Thanks.

Thanks for the interest. My most recent two posts provided names, places of birth, years of arrival and where they lived in the states. Anything not mentioned is incidental to my immediate family and would likely only be of interest to those who can make a direct link to my Carolans. Some things are just not known. Therefore I would enjoy hearing from researchers who wish to share their information with me so that together we might determine if a link exists. To all of have inquired or offered to share their knowledge, I look forward to hearing from you. Again, thanks very much.

Meath, Ireland. I want to find out more about my GG Grandfather Michael Carolan, in particular his parents and siblings if any. I am guessing that his father may have been a Patrick Carolan as Michael named his first child Patrick. On Michael & Martha's marriage cert the witnesses were Owen Harte & Jane Smyth, maybe they were relatives ?. #
Does any of this sound familiar to other Carolans from Co. Meath ?
Would to love to hear from you, Regards Mary.

Hi there,
Wondering if you know anything of this Carolan family from Co. Meath - Michael Carolan b. 1835 married Martha Gaynor b. 1850 Kiltale. They had 11 children and lived at Dollysgrove, Dunboyne. Looking for information on Michael Carolan's parents and siblings.
Many thanks,
Mary

I am looking for connections to Ireland either in Derry or Mayo for Margaret DAVID CARLIN or spelled CAROLAN and even CARLING. Margaret came to Grenville, Quebec about 1835 with her son James and his wife Mary DOHERTY and two children, Terrance (my great-grandfather) and Catherine, later called Kitty. Margaret is shown on the Drouin Collection married to ANTHONI or Anthony Carlin. I would really like to know which townland they came from. Big Pipe Dream!
