I posted this message several days ago and it never came back to me on the e-mail list. Also some messages that were posted by others after my original posting have not come to me on the list. So this is a test of sorts to see if I get it back this time.
My Carpenter line comes from Adam Carpenter of Cumberland/Moore Co, North Carolina, who moved to Edgefield District, South Carolina, c. 1802-1804. Time and place would suggest that his parents were Owen and Caterin _?_. Definite proof/documentation is lacking. There is a gap between Adam and Own.Owen does appear on some published militia list for that area. My paternal grandmother was a Carpenter from the Trenton area of Edgefield. Her family moved to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, c. 1902-05. She was the oldest of 8-10 children. George Edward Carpenter was one of her younger brothers. Does anyone on the board/list have access to Louisiana death records, say 1940-50's to say 2000 or so. Sorry I can't be more specific as to a date. Indexed obituaries in N. O. area newspapers??? I would very much like to find out whatever happened to one of my great uncles, George Edward Carpenter b. December 28, 1900 Edgefield County, South Carolina. About 1902-1907 his family moved to Augusta, Georgia, where they lived at 1492 Walton Way among other places. He was listed as living in Augusta in 1937 when his mother died. The place might be in error as I did not find him listed in the Augusta city directory.
The family story is that he was retired military, army staff sargent (?) lived in the New Orleans, Louisiana, area and refinished/sanded wood floors in his retirement. He is supposed to have married an officer's (Major?)widow. Not sure if they had any children. There are several parishes in the N.O. area. I have not been able to identify him on the SSDI or as being buried in a military cemetery or on ancestry which I use at a library. His birth date would suggest that he would have been slightly young for WWI and sort of old for very active service in WWII. Any assistance appreciated.
