Looking for information/ancestry on a Sherwood Carpenter who was living in Sonestown, PA when his son Edward Carpenter was born on June 5, 1901.

I'm not sure if Sherwood was married to the mother of his son, Catherine Babb. A year later she married a William Swisher.

When his son applied for a marriage license on July 5, 1922 he listed his father as being deceased.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Thanks for the reply John. I've been able to find that Robert's parents were John Carpenter b 1730 Hanover, Germany and Drucilla Tomlinson b 1758 Frederick Co., MD.
The problem I have with Robert's wives is that in his will it refers to Christina, but Reason b 1820 lives with Christina in 1850 and he is referred to as "son". The trees I've seen on Ancestry don't seem to know who was the mother of all these kids. Also there seems to be a break in the kids birthdays bet 1804 and 1812. It's just a mystery. If anyone has proof of which wife came 1st 2nd and 3rd PLEASE share.
Donna

Do you have proof that John Zimmerman (Carpenter) was born in Bavaria? This has long been a legend in the family, but I have never seen any proof. Also, the Drusilla Tomlinson link is tenuous. I am descended from Joseph and Sinah Gillaspy who tie into the same line as your David Daniel. Thanks, John

According to the Sharp/Stoner book; his 1st wife was unknown. Was she Jane Mills? He married 2nd 29 Oct 1812 Mary Ball and she was decesaed by 1839 when he married Christina (?). There is a oopy of Robert's will in the Carpenter book. Have you been able to identify his parents?
I think the Carpenter book was republished, but I am not aware of where it might be available. John

I am researching my husband's family that goes back to David I Carpenter then Robert "Robin" Carpenter. I have 2 questions.
1. Does anyone know how Robin had three wives at the same time? Mary Ball, Jane Mills, and Christina ??? He mentions Christina in his will dated 1839. It seems all three wives are alive at the same time. He has at least 17 kids, but who were the mothers?
2. Where can I get a copy of the book "A Carpenter Genealogy" pub 1996

Thank you so much
Donna

I found a family tree on this site with a Mildred Edna Carpenter, born 4 Oct 1884 in Defiance, OH, died 2 June 1921. Her parents were Lyman and Mary Jane Carpenter. She married Ross Harmon Wiler (1872-1949). They had 8 children, 6 of which it says are still living. It doesn't say anything about Edna having any brothers though.

Error in tree

For those of you researching NY Carpenters please be aware the there is an error in the Legare Family Tree posted by member stephanielaurelbrown.

She has a Jennie Lockwood married to a William Henry Carpenter born in Port Washington NY and has Williams ancestors incorporated in her tree.

This is incorrect. Jennie Lockwood may have been married to a William H Carpenter, just not the one she has attached.

The William Henry Carpenter, son of Eugene Edward Carpenter and Sarah Jane Fearon, in her tree was married to Eva Lulean Smith, my great grandfather's sister. I have marriage records, obituaries, cemetery records and information from about 6 or 7 of her many great grandchildren.

In addition the 2 children listed on her tree are also not children of my great aunt's husband.

I have sent several polite messages to the tree owner in the past year which have gone unanswered so I'm placing a post here in the hope that it may help to prevent this misinformation from spreading.

Dave Smith

Charles Robert & Margaret "Maggie" (Hayward) CARPENTER, of IL., ND

Hi! I am looking for descendants of Charles Robert Carpenter and Margaret "Maggie" Hayward. Charles was born in NY in 1841. He married Margaret "Maggie" Hayward in Jo Daviess county Illinois in the 1870's. I am directly connected to Maggie. She had 2 children before her marriage to Charles Carpenter. They were Julia Edith Wyman and Schuyler Wyman. Julia is my grandmother. Anyway Charles and Maggie moved from Illinois to North Dakota. They were in Iowa in 1900 and by 1910 in Scranton, Bowman co. ND. In 1920 Maggie was in Goldfield, ND and she is widowed. Maggie's' children are:
Julia Edith Wyman b. abt.1869-1871; Schuyler Wyman, 1872 (married a Nellie and as far as I can tell, they never had children); Bannon Carpenter, b.25 Dec.1879; Charles C. Carpenter, b.Feb.1880; Norman R. Carpenter, b.Dec.1881; Lewis a. Carpenter, b.. 21 Sept.1882; Mabel J. Carpenter, b.15 Oct.1883; George LeRoy Carpenter, b.3 Apr.1885 and Edna May Carpenter, b.15 May 1891. They were all born in Jo Daviess county Illinois according to the 1900 census. I was in contact with a Lucille who was a daughter of I think Norman and she lived in Scranton, ND. but I think she must have moved from there. This was in the late 1980's-1990's. I would like to connect with someone with ties to this family. Anyone researching these names????

Some years ago, a researcher placed John and Isaac as sons of the George Carpenter in Holmes Co. OH in 1850, but I don't know if she had proof of the relationship, and the reliability of some of that data is uncertain -- she showed Isaac as having married first Elizabeth Fisher, but that Isaac was a son of Thomas and Delilah Carpenter according to other research. She has John Carpenter marrying first on 29 Oct 1854 in Putnam Co. OH to Caroline Fend or Ferrell -- is your line of descent through John?

Correction to my previous reply -- Louisa was Isaac’s widow, not John’s -- the post should have read:
I believe the Isaac you're looking at is the one who married Caroline Carson on 28 Jun 1855 in Ashland Co. OH. She appears to be Louisa Caroline Carson -- in 1850 a Louisa C. Carson born c1825 in OH was enumerated as an unmarried woman with her mother, who was born in PA, and in 1880 -Isaac’s- widow Louisa was enumerated as Louisa C. Carpenter, born c1826 in OH with parents annotated as born in PA. Just circumstantial evidence though -- no proof. There's a lot of similarity in the names of Thomas and Delilah's children and these children, which has caused confusion for some researchers. They could be from the same ancestral line -- the George born c1791 could be a previously undocumented son of an older George Carpenter who was a son of the John Carpenter who was the father of Thomas Carpenter who married Delilah Critchfield. Just conjecture, but more searching might turn up evidence to prove or disprove the conjecture.
John died in 1881 and is buried in Harmon Cemetery. There is also an Isaac Carpenter buried there. He died in 1865 during the Civil War. I am trying to tie these two together as brothers. They served in the same unit in the CW. Also, there is a George Carpenter in Holmes Co. Ohio who had son's named John and Isaac of the right age. Could this be there father?
Yes, John is my GGGrandfather. The Isaac I am looking at married Louisa ? She is also buried in Harmon Cemetery. I found in the "Carpenter Chronicles" an article stating that Susan,Isaac and John were not the children on George but of Thomas and Delilah. It also stated that Isaac had 3 wives, none of which were Louisa. The other item that may tie John and Isaac together is that John, after the war, named one if his sons Isaac.
