Ruth Ellen Carper Knisley 1927-2012 Kingston, Ohio

CHILLICOTHE: On Saturday evening, April 28, 2012, we lost a precious and spirited lady.

Ruth Ellen Knisley, 85, of Kingston, Ohio passed surrounded by her family at Heartland of Chillicothe.

Ruth was born March 27, 1927 in Kingston, Ohio to Lester and Hazel (Coey) Carper.
In 1947 she married Harold L. Knisley who preceded her in death in 1992.

From this union came daughters, Sherry and her husband Dennis Zeigler, Kingston and Sue Anne Knisley, Chillicothe, Ohio.

In addition to her daughters, Ruth is survived by grandchildren, Becky (Chris) Minor and David Zeigler. In 2008 she was blessed with a great-grandchild, Evan Alan Minor.
By her bedside at this difficult time were her niece, Nancy King and nephew, Rodney (Pam) King, also surviving are nieces, Peggy (Ron) Kerg, Teresa and Lisa Carper, nephews, Bob and Rick Knisley; and many other relatives of both the Carper and Knisley families.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Jessie and Foster Knisley, her sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Ted King; brother-in-law, Chester and wife, Eileen Knisley; sister-in-law, Evelyn and husband, Bob Jackson and her brother, Charles Carper.

Ruth was known throughout Kingston for her beautiful flowers and the loving care that she gave to them.
She was also known for her feistiness and for her sense of humor, which won many friends over the years.
In addition to gardening, Ruth also enjoyed bowling and was at one time one of the better bowlers in Chillicothe. Although bowling was the only sport she participated in, she was an avid sports fan.

She worked at the U.S. Shoe Corp. in order to help pay for her childrens college educations.
Because she enjoyed dancing so much, she and her husband became members of the Eagles Aerie 600.
She was also a member of the E Pluribus Unum club.
She made many friends through these organizations and through her church, the Community Methodist Church in Hallsville.

Although her stay at Heartland of Chillicothe was brief, she met a special lady, her room-mate, Helen Detillion, who watched over her when no one else could be there. Helen quickly became part of the family and will always remain dear to us.

Our family would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Heartland of Chillicothe for the wonderful and compassionate care she received.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, May 3, 2012 in the FAWCETT OLIVER GLASS AND PALMER FUNERAL HOME with Rev. David Titler officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Kingston, OH. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, the Community Methodist Church or the Zane Trace Athletic Boosters. A memorial register is available online at www.fawcett-palmer.com

Kingston, Ohio - Kingston is a village in Ross County, Ohio

I am trying to find information on a wife of Nicholas Caper 1766-1820. I have the obit of Nicholas Carper who died in 1820. It says "lately married". His long time wife, Catherine died in 1819, I have her obit also. I also have his property deed information which list a widow getting items and her name was Rebekah. I cannot locate any other information on her. This wouldnt be Phillip's Rebekah would it?? Phillip was his executer also giving her money after the sale of items. Any help or information on this lineage would be great. Please email me at paul_bandy@yahoo.com and I will also be glad to forward copies of the obits.

Hi Angie - yes, it is sad and I thought a while before posting it, but it is a fact and part of a family's history. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about his 2nd wife. I wonder if the 1820 census had already taken place? If not, you may find a female head of family Carper in that census, or if she didn't remarry, in the 1830 census.

Ok, I looked and Franklin Patterson Carper's first wife was Mary Edna Thompson. They had 5 children, not 4. girls named Elizabeth, Ruby, Margaret, and Helen, and also a son I think was named Troy. They lived in Roanoke. James Williard Carper also lived the rest of his life with 2nd wife in Roanoke. Her name was Mary "Drucilla" Sheppard, widow of Marion Sutphin. She is not buried with her husband in Roanoke(long story) and is buried in Pulaski (Sheppard Cemetery).

Children of James Williard Carper and Mary Ellen O'Briant: There was Franklin Patterson Carper who died in Roanoke. He married twice, I know one wife was Nellie Ora Poff. He had 4 kids with the first wife. Glenn Edward went into the navy (because of mean stepmother Mary Drucilla Sheppard Carper), and never returned. Rosa Lee Married Thomas Marshall Neese and they stayed in Pulaski. And last was Fred Vernice Carper. He married Fanny Hoback and they also stayed in Pulaski. They has 2 kids, a boy who died young, and a daughter named Vernice who married a King. His brother Donald King was my grandmother's first husband who drowned a year after they married. So Vernice was her cousin and her sister-in-law. Rosa Lee and Tom had 6 kids: twins that died at birth, James Marshall Neese (married Nellie Bays), Ralph Neese (married Ila Lawson), Virginia Beatrice Neese (married Albert Jones then Garnett Fields Crowder), and then was my grandma Frances "Colleen" (married Donald King, then Charles Saylor). My great aunt Virginia's first husband abandoned her and 2 babies by throwing his hat in Claytor Lake and going to West Virginia. Many years later he reappeared in various places. Many interesting stories.

I appreciate that. Yes my Grandpa was John Hayes and my grandmother was Margaret Olive Carper. This has been such a rewarding experience. Almost all of my information I have found documented facts. I was able to find a " Descendants of Nicholas Carper " by Don Norman that was done on our family tree and you are right you really have to disect if but most has been right on cue so far. Would you happen to have any pictures. My family tree is the Hayes/Carper tree. I have not been able to see my relatives on the Hayes side for about 8 years so I'm doing this family tree for each and everyone of them to give at a reunion that we may have. I have found some pictures and will soon go up to my moms to download more. My father use to work in criminal investigation so it runs in the blood! Ha! By chance how are you related to the carpers if you don't mind me asking. I have not had the opportunity to meet any of them except my Aunt Orva when she lived with my grandma. As it is I'm trying to find a picture of her son that died as a teenager and have written to one of the libraries who have an old Stonewall Jackson yearbook, 1954. He would have been a junior. No one seems to have a picture of Samuel Perry Smallwood III.

There is a really great source. A guy named Don Norman did a huge research project on the Carpers. I was very interested because my grandmother was a Carper. Anyway it's about 215 pages, but my family is in it. So it has been a great help. I am doing this for the entire Hayes family. My grandmother who was a Carper married a Hayes. As a present I'm doin this for a reunion next year. I got this information in Ancestry.com. I will try to find out exactly where I got it. and get back to you. How are you related to the Carpers?

We have heard over the years but have no proof.

Talk to you soon,

Trish

Ok, yes, your "Lewis" is listed in the household of Patterson and Letha Carper (his parents in WVA) in 1880. He is the older brother of my gggrandfather James Carper.

Plus, Udoxa was a step-sister to my gggrandmother, Mary Ellen (James wife. So there, we are related twice !

And I will tell you while I am online here, that if JAcob's was my gggrandfather's brother, I have their info too. Parents were Hannah Patterson Carper and Letha Ann Wood (WVA). Lots of info out there on them, very easy to trace. Good Luck !

Ok, I just looked up quickly, in the 1870 census she is Udoxa Caviness, and in 1880 she is listed as Udory Caviness, both times in Pulaski. Her mother Martha is buried in Carroll Co., We can't figure out where her step-dad was buried (Frank O'Briant). I'd sure like to know. He is my direct line.
