Surnames: Carruthers, Carlyle, Warman, Wilson
I am interested in hearing from anyone with a connection to a Walter Carruthers who married Isabella/Tibby Byres/Byers in St. Mungo c.1805. I am particularly interested in their son James, born 06 May 1810 (record available on Scotland Peoples) and their daughter, Elizabeth, who married William Carlyle.
The reason I am interested, is because I have a James Carruthers who came to New Brunswick in 1832. My James married Elizabeth Wilson in St. Mungo c.1829 and they had a son, William Carruthers, who was born on 09 Jan 1831 in St. Mungo. (Record available on Scotland Peoples). Their next son, David, was born in Coal Branch, Kent, New Brunswick, Canada in 1833. I have not yet been able to determine James' parents.
Back to the James born of Walter and Tibby - I have a hunch that this might be the same James that I am looking for. But I've come across a discrepancy. I have located one online tree that shows James married to Phyllis Gowanlock - but I find 3 other trees showing the parents of James who married Phyllis Gowanlock as Christopher and Mary Carruthers.
However, the 1841 Scotland census, has Walter and Tibby living with granddaugher, Helen Carlyle. (I haven't figured out yet what happened to Helen's parents, Elizabeth Carruthers and William Carlyle). Helen came to Canada and settled in Kent, New Brunswick, and married William Warman. I cannot see a young girl travelling to Canada on her own unless she had relatives in the place she settled. If her mother's brother, James, was the same as mine, then it makes more sense. Even more sense if her parents had deceased.
I would love to be able to prove (or disprove) my theory.
If anyone has any information, please reply to this thread, or contact me directly at lcaron0822@rogers.com.
