Hago Carsten

I found this in a newspaper.
The Lake County Star, Crown Point, IN
May 28, 1909
"An Untimely Death"
Hago Carsten, of Lowell, who was severely burned last Monday afternoon, died on Wednesday, and hardly reached the prime of life. He was cleaning furniture upstairs inhis home with gasoline, which from some unknown cause ignited - it is thought by friction- and if help had not been nearby he would have been cremated and the house burned at the time. He was taken out all ablaze by Ed Clark and Roy Daum, who also saved the house and although it was believed that Mr Carsten was badly burned and it was thought that he would recover up to a short time before his death. Mr Carsten was a trustee of the town of Lowell. He leaves a wife and two young children.

Karen & Don
Where to begin -- Fred Carsten (1918-1948) was a brother of both Earl and Francis. Fred had one daughter, Ellen Jane Carsten (b.1944 and living). Ellen is my step-sister. After Fred died, his widow remarried my father, who was also a widower. All of these people are now deceased.

Ellen has been married twice. She has been married to Ole Nielsen, her current husband, for over 30 years and they live in Denmark. Yes, Denmark. Ellen's husband has been very helpful in investigating the Carsten family roots in Holstein. You are perhaps aware that:

Heinr. Carstens, 24, a farmer, and Johanna Carstens, 22, arrived in USA between Nov 1865 and June 1866 vis Ship: Saxonia, from an Unknown Villiage in Germany. (The 1880 US Census reported they were both born in Holstein.)
There was a decisive war in 1864 between Germany and Denmark. The Germans defeated the Danes, and the Duche of Holstein was transfered from Denmark to Germany as part of the war reparations. It would appear that Heninr did not want to serve the new German masters, so he left for the New World and Iowa.

If you are interested in address and contact information, send a direct email to johnday3@sbcglobal.net with your snail mail address and telephone.

She was at jre3456@aol.com in Sep,2000. It was on the Carsten message board. Can't be of more help. Regards

I'm looking into Mabel & Everett Youngblood history. Everett had 1 brother "Dow" & 2 sisters "Bessie K m. Frank Parks" & "Mildred Mae m. Leon Colthar". Mildred died 1939 & Leon wouldn't talk about her or give out any info'. Mildred is MY grandmother. My mom & I have tried to locate family for years without any luck. It sounds like Virginia Eyman is kin. I'd like to talk to someone to find out more.
Wanda

Did your father have a sister Virginia and one older (I can't recall her name right now.) I have a family picture of the Carsten family with your gggrandmother as a young woman. That is the biggest problem in searching for our roots.. no one asked questions etc. Happy I made a connection with you. Naomi

Wish I could tell you we are related but it is remote. The August Carsten family of Mich. was from the issue of August (b approx. 1830) and Sarah Canfield (b approx 1850). There were also Carsten in Canada and the rr and boat travel was popular. Good luck

Hello. I am wondering if my Carsten line may connect with yours. I don't have much info on mine, unfortunately. Here's what I do have:

Franklin Benjamin Sanford Carsten was born 28 December 1907 in Grand Rapids Michigan. His death certificate lists his mother as Nettie Asperton, but I can't even find Asperton as a surname. I can't make out his father's name, but it may be Frank. His father is said to have been full-blooded Swedish. At the age of 12, he was in the Muskegon Children's Home (orphanage). By Jan of 1936, he was married to Ellen Blanche VanWormer. They lived in Valley Farms MI, with their two daughters, Joy Elaine and Howardine Gay. Frank had tuberculosis and had had one lung and rib cage removed. Howardine, or Deenie as she was called, drank out of Frank's spitoon and contracted the disease. She subsequently died. Frank committed suicide by jumping into the Grand River and drowning July 12 1940. His widow didn't speak of him much to their daughter Joy, or Jeanne, as she preferred to be called. Therefore, she wasn't able to be of much help to me. Joy was my maternal grandmother. Her ex-husband, my grandfather, told me when they were stationed in California, my grandma was writing to Frank's brother's daughter. The brother was involved in real estate and was doing very well for himself. The brother seemingly cut off correspondence between his daughter and my grandmother.

If you can help at all, please let me know. I am desperate to know more about this man, and hence, my heritage. Thank you for your time. Shannon Ritter Coker

Yes, we are related. Charlie Carsten was the son of Henry Carsten and Johanna Ehler. Charlie married Ollie [unknown] and had children Earl Paul, Gladys, Ella May, Fred, Charles Francis and Minnie R. I don't have anything descendants beyond what I have listed. If you want to email me direct, I can give you dates, etc. My email address is: debernhardt@hotmail.com.

My grandfather was Francis Carsten. My father was Charles Carsten, which was supposedly a family name, and my brother is Charles Carsten. My father and grandfather have passed, and I only have one REAL relative, sister to Francis that I know of. She is in Shawnee, OK. I had a great Aunt Ella Mae who was my grandfather Francis' sister as well. If you kow more about this family, I would VERY much like to know if we are related. My knowledge of our family stops at my grandfather Francis. Thanks!
Karen Carsten

I'm not sure just yet how Johanna fits in with my relatives but I'm checking on it. She settled in the same county that my Ehler relatives settled in and is just a few years older than my great great grandfather Matthaeus Ehler (born in 1835 in Bojendorf, Fehmarn). I wouldn't be surprised to find that Matthaeus and Johanna were brother and sister or at least cousins. I will write a relative in Germany and ask if he has her on his family tree. His grandmother stayed in Germany while the rest of the family came to the US. His tree goes further back than ours does. As soon as I find out anything, I will let you know.

Hi, Doris. Julius, Ludwig and John Ehler came to Ida County, IA from Fehmarn Island in 1884 or 86 and their father Matthaeus and brother Richard came over in 1893. I sent your posting to my mother to see if the information she has from her cousin in Germany includes any information about Johanna. I've wondered why they chose to go to Ida County. You have probably solved that mystery. If Mother doesn't know, I'll contact Gunter and see what I can find out from him.

Faye

Doris
One added comment: I was under the impression that Henry and Johanna were born in Holstein, not Schleswig. In the 1880 Census, they both reported their birthplace to be Holstein. They had a number of neighbors in the same census from Schleswig and also Prussia, but the census ennumerator seemed to be very distinctive. Do you have some additional information?

The 1880 Census also reports that Emil was 13, which means he was likely born in 1867.

Ollie Maye Carsten, Charlie's wife, was born 27 Mar 1889 Texas, died 3 Nov 76 in Shawnee, Pottawatonie Co, OK

Are you a Weaver descendant? Hope to hear from you.

Hello Virginia & Shawn~

My husband's great grandfather is Otis Carsten married to Blanche Comstock. I have August Carsten (spelled Karstin)'s Naturalization papers, he became a citizen on August 16, 1881.
Frederick William/Fredric Wilhelm Carsten

Frederick William Carsten arrived in the U.S. with his parents in 1852 on the Ship Oder from Hamburg, Germany. His parents were Fredric b. ca 1817 Germany and Anna b. ca 1824 Germany. At the time of arrival, 8-yr old Frederick was the only child with his parents. No further record/mention of this Carsten family has been found until Fred joined the Mo. State Militia Calvary in 1863 in Northern Mo.. Any help with this family would be appreciated. Fred married confederate widow Neoma/Naoma (Manes)Reynolds in Springfield, MO in 1864.
Re: Carsten Family of Michigan

Hi Shawn,

I am a Carsten decendant, August was a farmer in Bingham, MI near Traverse City. He was married to Sarah Canfield in Traverse City on April 18, 1877, children Charles, Alvah, Mable, Otis, Julia, Mattie, Eva, Everette and Ada. Mable was my Ggrandmother, she married Charles Homan. My father remembers that August only spoke German in his home, if you couldn't speak german, business was done in the yard. I am told he was from Mechlenburg (sp?), Germany. This is about all the information I have for now, hope it helps.

Ok here is what I know.

I'am married to Merle F.Carsten Who is the Son of Merle L Carsten. Whos is the son of Merle W.Carsten and Mary Kitchen of Michigan They had Six sons who are Merle,Jimmy,Leonard,Ronald,Robert,Neal.
Merle W. Carsten had many siblings who I believe are Otis,Lyle,Donald,Al,Gladys,Mable, and Blanche.
There may be more. I know that their Father was August Carsten. What I don't know is if August was born here or in Germany. I know that they are German decendants. Which I found record of where an August Carsten Came to America from England. Well his ship set sail from England that is.In August 10,1895.
He was married at the time and he was 30 years old at his time of arrival. Actually he arrived here on August 10,1895. The name of the ship he sailed on was The Lahn. So you see I'am Stumped here. I'am waithing and searching for anything alse that will hepl us in our search For My husband's Ancestors so we Can go further in his Family Tree. If anyone can help Please let me know.
