I have been researching the family and I was always told that there was Irish and that it was the Degerlund family that the Irish came from. But I guess now it was just stories that wasn't confirmed. I really appreciate the information that you have given me.

Well I am glad to know that I am really Irish. I was told that I had a great great or rather I'm not sure how many greats my grandmother would have been to come over from Ireland. Do you want to keep in touch? We could email each other. Since you have your email address on here I will email you if you don't mind. You don't know how much it means finding some family on my fathers side. For me everyone is deceased I can't verify much only whats on Ancestry.com and the information that I was told when I was a child and what my mother can remember being told too. My name is Donita and it's nice to meet you Bob.

Well, I guess that makes us third cousins. I wonder if the date in the records was the date of departure for the USA but since I did not do this research, I cannot be of much help in verifying how that date turned up. Years ago I was in touch with a Degerlund family in Alaska who were missionaries in Russia. That connect terminated because I am not a religious person. My Gustav married an English widow with 2 children, had 7 more kids by her, one being my grandmother who died of TB in 1926 at age 30. my mother came to Canada as a war bride with my brother and me in tow.
My daughter will produce the first of the next generation by C-section on June 8th. Life goes on!
Cheers
Bob
I have the same information as you do about my great grandmother Eva except she married my great grandfather Chas Berg in 1882. They had 6 children. Mary, Arthur, Anton, Vina, Wilford (my grandfather), and Adela. I found this on the 1900 United States Federal Census Record for Chas Berg. In addition, Eva was Born Dec 22, 1855 died in 1907 and is buried in Murray, Utah. Thats why I was wondering how we were related because Gustaf Severin Degerlund would be my great uncle.

Thanks for your email. I cannot find the name BERG anywhere in my documents but the name Eva Wilhelmina Degerlund born in Bromarv(Bromarf) December 22, 1855 appears. She was the daughter of Hedvig Gustava Forsman (1809-1868) and Eric Johan Degerlund (1806-1870). She only lived to be nineteen and died in Tenola in 1874. She was the older sister to my great grandfather Gustaf Severin Degerlund who left home, as the story goes, at the age of 8 because he did not like doing the farm chores. He went to sea as a cabin boy and spent the next 20 years travelling and learning to be a ship's carpenter. He landed in London, took a land job and never looked back. I like to refer to him as a Swede by race, a Finn by location, a Russian by occupation and a Brit by choice. The records for Finland Lutherans are probably the best in the world and will tell you most everything going back to the 1600s. Each church also recorded where an individual moved to when he or she left the local community. If you need details of the Berg side of the family, you need to find birth, marriage and death certificates for each generation. While it will cost you a few bucks it will save you a lot of grief because each document details certain pieces of useful information. I also suspect that if you cannot read the documents you can easily find someone who can translate for you on the Internet. 8% of the Finn population is Swedish. They settled along the coast throughout the Aland Islands long before the settlement of the borders. From books I have read the movement occurred at the recomendation of the King of Sweden in the 1400 or 1500s so they have beent here for a long time, originally in Ovanmalm, Norr Degergard, from which their names originated when they moved to Bromarv as in "Caoming from the land of Deger or DEGERLUND." That all occurred in the 1700s and from what I can see there were several members unrelated who moved from Norr Degergard to Bromarv so both ended up with the new surname that stuck but were not related. This can only be verified by yDNA testing today.

Can you find your roots in Finland or are they located elsewhere? Where do you live?

Hopefully something here is useful.
Kindest regards,
Bob Carswell
Toronto
I have been reading everyone's posts but I am confused here. I think I am related but I am not sure how. My great grandmother is Eva Degerlund Berg. She married my grandfather Chas Berg. I couldn't help noticing Mr. Bob Carswell your family tree with my great grandmother in it. I hope I am talking to the right person. Trying to find my fathers side of the family is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Everyone is dead on my father's side of the family. My father is deceased and he was an only child. I hope so much that you can shed some light for me. It would be much appreciated.

She was born in New Zealand."

If this is the same family I'm tracking, you're actually speaking of "Margaret Evelyn Hill," who was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 10 December 1913, daughter of Canadian authoress Maude Pettit Hill Beaton.

I'm hoping to find out Margaret's sister's name. All I have is "Mrs. Lawrence Evans."
Hi Leslie,
I have great news!!
I connected Sue in England with a cousin in Nanaimo British Columbia. He met Sue's Aunt Ivy and he comes from another branch on the family tree that settled many years ago in Nova Scotia!
I managed to track folks down through the Canadian Obituary Collection! With our privacy laws,it's hard to get info so obits and public family trees help alot.I did find a family tree and they were helpful too!
Thanks so much for your reply.
Elaine

By the time your ancestors came to Canada mine had been here for over 125 years. Although they came to this country as Carswell, the name changed for most of them to Cerswell, I think probably because of their accents and poor spelling on the part of the census folks. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

Back again, unfortunately my address supplied in my reply
was removed to prevent direct connection.
Well first your query re going up the tree from Robert Carswell and Christina Shanks, we have James Carswell and Jean Shanks, and up to Robert Carswell and his second wife Janet Stevenson, and up again to Robert Carswell and his second wife Janet Finlayson. Try me on Lower case carswell
at netspeed then dot com dot au that is Australia, hope that gets through. Now My information just given may, I say
maybe have errors, but 95% chance OK.

Please is there any one out there that can help me, for the past few year's i have been trying to complete my family tree, but i'm still missing a piece to the puzzle, i can still not find my aunt, Ivy Lilian i know she was still living in Toronto Canada in 1977, she moved to Canada in 1927 from England, she was born in 1902, her maiden name was Hansell, her name when married was Carswell, but i think she may have been married twice, & believe her first married name may have been Farrant, I have had lots of people who have been kind enough to help me, but i'm still up against a brick wall, thought we had found her but it was the wrong lady, it wasn't the ivy carswell who was buried in British columbia in 1772, she was a different person, if anyone can help me find her i would so gratfull, as i have tried so hard to find some information, i know she arrived in Quebec as i have a passenger list of her traveling as a domestic where she then arrived at a Women's hostel, many thanks, Sue,

My Gran died two years ago at the grand age of 102.

What kind of info are you looking for ?

Hi Sue
I don't think there is a connection. My Family lived in Scotland. My Carswell relation ends with my great grandmother back in the late 1800s. It would be interesting to work back to see if there is actually a connection.

My mother-in-law was Mary Marie (Polly) Carswell of the Morganton, North Carolina area. She married Riley Buchanan and lived in Sanford NC. I believe she died in 1980. Her children are Gary and Sharmin. My son is interested in locating his cousins.
