The patron saint of Derry diocese (Catholic) is St Eugene, so the name is popular among Derry Catholics. Julia is much less so, being found more often in the south and west of Ireland. Kenny is usually a southern surname.
As for the Free State / Northern Ireland puzzle. County Donegal is part of the Irish Republic (previous to 1948 called the Free State), but lies in extreme north-west Ireland - further north, in fact, than the six counties known as Northern Ireland! However, I still favour a County Derry origin for any CARTEN family - I've rarely met the surname outside that county.

I'm seeking information on a Mokwa that married my cousin Amalia "Emily" Dietiker. They lived in or near St. Louis, Missouri. She was born in November of 1893. As such, he would of been born about the same time. I believe he died before 1910.

Please contact me if you have any information. Also, I'm willing to share my side of the family genealogy.

Leah (Pearson) Reich
Email: geofiles@aol.com

Scott, I have recently been informed that when my Cartens got off the boat in New York, there was another group of Cartens that went to Atlanta. What do you know of your ancestors?
Re: CARTEN ORIGINS

Hello P A, I'm so happy to have found your post. I am researching Carten Family which settled in St. Louis, Mo. I have recently found that one of my immigrant ancestors had a daughter born in Louisianna, so your idea may be worth checking into, but how do I begin? Can you provide any help? This is what I know about my Carten ancestors:

They arrived in USA in 1850. My Greatgreatgrandparents were Eugene and Julia Kenny Carten. Eugene died during the voyage and was buried at sea. Their known children were Thomas, David, Edward, John, James, Bridget. Bridget was born Sept. 15, 1842, David in 1827, James in August of 1832. James is my Greatgrandfather. Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated.

I have seen census records here where one of them claimed their parents were born in Irish Free State, but the same census has his sibling claiming they were from Northern Ireland. What a dilemma this causes! Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Susan Hamilton

CARTEN ORIGINS

There is a family / clan called CARTAN / CARTEN / CARTON which has been located for centuries in the Barony of Keenaught, Co Londonderry, Ireland, eg in the parish of Dungiven. Since this clan stopped speaking Irish (about 1830 onwards), some families of it have changed their surname to McCARTNEY, assuming (quite incorrectly) that McCARTNEY was a "correct" form of CARTAN.
St Patrick's Catholic church graveyard in Dungiven has some graves of local people who emigrated to Louisiana and nearby areas in the early 19th century, so it may well be that worth seeking a connection / origin here.
Good hunting!
