do you have any information on African American Carters and their slave owners?
My great great grandmother was Mary Ann Carter (ca. Oct. 1852- Aug. 1937). She married Henry Claiborne Talton in 1883 in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. Much later in life (at age 60), I have records that she married Ab Cross. Mary Ann was Henry’s 2nd wife. They had 8 children (Henry had 6 additional children from his 1st wife- Lucinda Atlanta Dansby).
Mary Ann Carter’s family (prior to her marriage to Henry) can be found on the 1870 and 1880 Claiborne Parish, LA census. At some point, Mary Ann moved to Arkansas where she passed away.
I am interested in finding information on Mary Ann Carter’s parents, who are listed as Joseph & Alice Carter (born Jones). They both can be found on the 1870 and 1880 Claiborne Parish, LA census. The census says they were born in South Carolina. But I do not have any information on where. According to the Census data, Joseph was born around 1809 while Alice was born around 1824.
I heard that Joseph was born a slave, but was given manumission papers and land in Minden, Louisiana where he had land value in excess of $2600.
I’d be interested to know if anyone has any information on Joseph, his slave master(s), any possible siblings, photos, anything….
Ultimately, if anyone is familiar with these names, please contact me here or via my email:
