Do you happen to know if this Bowlin Carter who is listed on the marriage bond in Wake Co. 02 Aug 1856 as BOLDLIN CARTER marrying REBECCA A.E. HOULDER is the same man as the BOLING CARTER listed on a marriage bond 16 Oct. 1851 in Franklin Co. marrying AQUILLA CARTER? I noticed on the death certificate for BOLLING CARTER that it says he was born in Franklin County. I am trying to trace some Carters in the Nash/Franklin Co. areas, some of whom moved to Wake County.
Thanks,
Nancy Smith

My Great Grandfather, John James Carter, was born and raised in Lafayette Co, MS. He and his family are listed in Erath, TX in the 1900 census. I'm not sure why they left MS. Their 3d son was named George Washington who died as an infant. Just wondered if they had relatives in Erath. By 1910 they are living in Beckham Co, OK.

Re: CARTERS OF BARTOW, CHEROKEE COUNTIES IN GA

Thank you for your reply! This has been a very hard family for me to research but since then I believe I have nailed down this information. I will put it out there and maybe it will help someone. Harriet Carter, I believe, was the daughter of Austin/Augustus/Augustine Carter. He is listed as Austin, age 64, on the 1870 Census in Bartow County, Georgia. Also listed with the family is Elizabeth Carter, age 58; Jincy Carter, age 47; Robert A Carter, age 23; Caroline Carter, age 21; Harriet Carter, age 19. Then in the next household is Ben Carter, age 22; and a name that I can't figure out (starts with M) age 16. I can't figure out where Jincy fits in - she is obviously too old to be Elizabeth's daughter but could possibly be a daughter to Austin. 1880's Census yielded Augustus Carter, age 74; wife, Elizabeth, age 72; daughter, Claris, age 30. I can't be sure about any of the others except Harriet, my great-grandmother, who is listed with her husband, Larkin Abernathy and their son, John, in Cherokee County. About 1885 Harriet, Larkin, and several children moved to Yell County, Arkansas, where they had a few more children and later died. In 1899 Clarissa Carter married Joseph Davis. 1900 Census lists Joe Davis, age 68; wife, Clarise A Davis, age 50; and Mother-in-law, Lizzie Carter, age 94, widow. I later found a Death Certificate for Mrs. Joe Carter (1927) listing her father as Austin Carter, mother unknown.

I can't be sure about any information before 1870. Nothing I find seems to totally fit. And I am not sure what happened to any of the other children; I can't be sure of any of them after 1870 either. If any of this information is familiar to you, please contact me.

Again, thanks for the reply. There are Carters around Yell County, Arkansas and surrounding counties but I can't seem to make a connection between them and mine.

Linda my name is Keith. I have a Copy Of the 1880 census also listing him as James, but everything else that I have lists him as John with the exception of the 1850 census that lists him as Monroe. I have copies of the 1900, 1910 census records listing him as John as well as a copy of his death certificate. He is not in the 1920 census as he died 03 Aug 1916. This is very interesting as I did not have any information about Sarah other than her name and that she was born in Georgia. I do have information my Line of Milners starting with me and going back to John's father Meades and possibly his grandfather Jeremiah, who were also in Franklin County, GA. I would love to have copies of the letters if it is possible. I will share any information about the Milners that I have.

thanks, Keith Milner

I'm seeking information about the Carter family from Brooklyn. They had 12 children, though two were deceased by 1910 and so there were 10 children. I believe their children's names were, in part, Henrietta, George abt1888, Benjamin, Evelyn, Caroline, and Edward. It is possible that Evelyn married someone named Burke, Caroline married Biggio, and Henrietta married Bruns. I appreciate any assistance. Thank you.
My name is Carla Carter, this is in regards to the message posted by Jennifer Pidgeon. Berry Edward Carter, was my great great grandfather, I pretty much have the same information you do from the article about him in West Virginia and its people. I too have tried to locate information regarding him in and around Lychburg and Chattanooga and found nothing. I was born and raised and still reside only ten minutes from Molers Cross Roads WV, where Berry died, and have a hand full of relatives that may know the answer to your question. I will continue my search to locate exactly where he came from and the names of his parents and grand parents.

Hello, I checked the 1880 Census Shelby County, Tn. original hand written record. It lists James Milner and wife Sarah with Meads, James (son), Walter, and Lilly. It is for this reason I have him listed in my Genealogy as James... is the census wrong ? What other information do you have that he is John and not James.. I will be willing to change my informstion if needed. Also, you may find it interesting that Lilly signs her name as Lillie Milner in both letters to her Carter cousins in Arkansas. She writes their address as Layton Post Office, Jackson County, AR. the area was called Cow Lake. Today it is near Newport Arkansas. Lillie dates her letter March 1894 and places on her letter she is writting from Grandbery Tenn.. that was the post office station close to Collierville. I went there back in 1999 (I think)... and found that in that place there is still a small community today, it is called Fisherville. The Grandbery name has been long since dropped (it was named after somone after the civil war). I have a copy of a letter written by the minister of the Fisherville Baptist church in June 1892, that says Hepsey Carter is in good standing with the church and it is a referral for her to take to Arkansas on their move. I believe this was for Mary Milner Carter's sister-in-law... George's sister whom never married. George had a daughter he named after this same sister but I noticed her nickname was spelled slightly different, even in the letter Lillie Milner wrote.. You may find it interesting that the Fisherville church has burned or been rebuilt I think on several occasions. In the church there is a prayer room and in the room is a bookcase with a glass front that is locked. There are some of the church's old historic items inside. I saw a book listing Baptisims from that era so I ask if I could see it. Someone unlocked the case and I glanced thru it... looking for Carter's of course... I think I saw where some of the Milner children were listed.. you may want to make a trip if you live in the area. The church also has a cemetery. Another area the Carter's and possibly the Milner's -was just across the Shelby County line (they lived so close)into Fayette County.. I have another letter sent from Franklin County, GA to Miss Hepsey Carter in care of W.C. Jankins/Jenkins ? Elby Post Office Fayette County, Tenn. I have no idea who the W.C. person is. I stopped at an old country store in the area. I talked to a very old gentleman (probably 80). He pointed down a road and said that his kinfolks always referred to an area when he was a child called the "Old Carter" family place...he said if I went down it I could still see some of the old barn still standing in the back. I do not know if these were the same Carter's as mine.. but I do rememeber the Milner's lived near the Carter's, and I thought about them too as I traveled down the back country roads... where they all lived together in Civil District 9. The Milners family #431 George Carter and Mary E. Milner family #482. George's mother, brother Wm and sister Hepsey were family #423. George Carter's sister Mary Ann Carter Madden was my ggrandmother. She had a son named Walter too ! He was born one year after your Walter Milner, he had an older brother born 2 months before your Walter. They were both born there in Tn. with the rest of the allied family children. Well I hope you got something from this. I do not even Know your name. I am Linda.

I think Austin D. and Charles were brothers... there was also another brother I think William R. and maybe at least one sister. Check the poll tax records of Franklin County GA. some where around 1840-1860, you will find more info on who paid for whom. Good luck... Just a note that both Austin's family and Charles's family moved from Franklin County to Bartow County.... ????

Gerge W. Carter son of Charles W. and Elizabeth Carter of Franklin County, Ga (and later) Bartow County, Ga... and Shelby County, TN.. married a Milner.. Mary E. I thought her brother was James not John ? did he have a daughter named Lillie/Lilly Milner and a son Walter Milner ? I have a copy of a letter Lillie wrote to one of her Carter cousins back in 1890 (I think). They had moved to Arkansas... someone told me they thought Lillie moved to Lousiana later in years but I am not sure.

Looking for any decendents of William a. Carter,s marriage to Ella Townsend (about 1893) and his marriage to Carrie G. Moore in 1913. Both marriages were in Rockingham County, NC. Also like to know of any decendents of his brother John D. or sisters Mattie Sue and Marey E. William A.also married Margaret Mayberry in 1909 in Wahington, D.C at which time it was known he had was widowed with several children

Carter Family in Tennessee and Texas

I am looking for information on J. Y. "Joseph" Carter born in Tennessee abt 1828. I find an 1861 marriage license in Hunt Co., Texas in 1861--marriage to Elizabeth Bebee. He appears as a Confederate soldier in Flournoy's unit from Texas and reappears again in Wood Co., Texas after the war (census 1870). Elizabeth appears as a widow in the 1880 census. Can anyone help me connect him to other family members?
