When I was a young girl I knew a Harjes married to an american woman known as Libby, who might well be the Elisebeth Conn you mentioned (the timing seems about right). If so, that Harjes was very definitely part of the jewelry family, and I believed was working in connection with the London establishment.
Hi Elaine,

My father, Gerard Cartier, and his brothers and sisters were all born and raised in Michigan. My grandfather's name was Laurent Cartier and my grandmother's, name was Lily Dazielle, although she went by Laura most of her adult life. I have a cousin who was done research on our family tree, but I don't have that much information. I could find out more if any of this sounds familiar to you.

Cynthia - bloominstamper@cableone.com

Check out this website for information on the Cartier line back to France. http://smcc.myftp.org/genealogy/ The Drouin index on Ancestry provides birth, marriage and death records on the Cartier line in Canada. My husband is connected to this family. If you can connect with one of the lines listed on the website above, you are related to Jacques Cartier. He did not have any children of his own, but his uncle, Guillaume, settled in St. Francois du Lac, Canada, died there in 1719, and if you can hook up with his line you are related.

Jacques Cartier (one of the three brothers at Cartiers peak) married Nelly Harjes in 1912. Jacques Cartier died in 1942, so he couldn't be marrying anyone in 1945!

I can find record of 2 sons from his marriage to Nelly Harjes, and possibly one of these had Harjes as a second name... and married in 1945

I am looking for a connection to a Charles Cartier who came from French Canada and moved to Antrim county Michigan.
He is listed in the census under the name Carter, although much of the family went by the name of Cartier up until the mid 40's early 50's when my grandfather changed it. Most likely in those days they just changed it, it was never done legally I am sure... no one really cared I would think.
Thanks' Elaine

Re: CARTIER, Joel Patrick

The Green Bay Press Gazette, Green Bay, WI, April 25, 2007

Joel Patrick Cartier, 58, Seymour, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday afternoon, April 21, 2007. It brings to a close his brief but fierce battle against cancer. He was born Aug. 24, 1948, in Raleigh, N.C., the son of Frances (Holzer) Cartier and the late Warren Cartier. On June 27, 1975, he married the love of his life, Lynn Larsen, in Oshkosh. Joel served as a proud member of the United States Navy from 1968 to 1972 in Southeast Asia. He was a member of the Seymour American Legion Post 106. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 1975 and began his teaching career at Rock Ledge Elementary School in Seymour. Joel coached basketball and volleyball. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Joel loved the changing seasons of Wisconsin. In springtime, he played the first round of Frisbee golf, worked side-by-side with Lynn to plant the garden and anxiously awaited the return of the geese. On any given day of the summer, you could find him busy in the garage woodworking and listening to the Milwaukee Brewers on the radio. But he was never too busy to shoot hoops in the driveway, plan the next canoeing trip or recite "Little Orphan Annie" around the backyard campfire.

Fall brought the thrill of a new round of volleyball players for him to coach, and a new classroom of eager fifth grade students. On the weekends, he headed to the woods with a gun in one hand and a camera in the other and, much to Lynn's delight, usually came back only with great pictures. Winter meant basketball — coaching, playing and March Madness. Between games, the outdoors beckoned him with birdfeeders to fill, snow forts to be built and cross country ski trails to break.

In every season, Joel's life-long love of learning inspired him to discover something new and exciting in each activity. All of his passions and the talents he shared so generously were surpassed only by the example of love he lived and gave to his family.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn; daughters, Donna (Lonnie) Sorrell, Coon Rapids, Minn.; Kirsten Cartier, Chicago, Ill.; Megan Cartier, Appleton; Marcie Cartier (Kimani) Jefferson, Seymour; three (and a half) grandchildren, Lonee Sorrell, Helena, Pace and baby Jefferson; mother, Frances Cartier, Wauwatosa; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Fellion, Niagara; brothers and sisters, Dorinda (Roger) Cartier, Larson; Holly Cartier, Wauwatosa; Kevin (Cherie) Cartier, Marshalltown, Iowa; Lisa (Jack) Albert, Muskego; Parry (Kathleen) Cartier, Wauwatosa; Julie (Myron) Cartier, Glenview, Ill.; Quentin (Maria) Cartier, Brookfield; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a nephew, Andy Hartz.

Friends may call at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. with Father Robert Kabat officiating. Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.boettcherfuneralhomes.com.

In the spirit of Joel's love of the outdoors and lifelong learning, a memorial fund has been established to complete the building of the Maple Syrup Cabin at Fallen Timbers Environmental Center.
I am looking for information on the family of Charles Carter/Cartier. he married Florence Robbins in Montcalm County Michigan, abt 1888.
They had 9 children. Some of them are Floyd, Roy, Rose, Laura , Bessie(?) Harry, Irving. The other two I need to look at my resources for the names...its late..
Charles is from French- Canada according to the census takers. His name is also listed as Carter, but it is originally Cartier. All other family members ussed Cartier up till Irving and Harry who are the youngest. It seems they decided to start going with the name Carter full time.
I am looking for where Charles might be buried. I also know that the eldest son, Floyd was born in Saint John Canada.
If anyone has heard anything about this family please holler at me.
I would also like to thank Vernon Chartier for all his help in my getting this far ... Thanks Vernon!

Thanks for you note.. it would seem we are related! I have a pretty expansive list of ancestors on the Rheaume side, but not much on the Carey side beyond George and Mary Jane's parents. I also have a ton of into on George Carey's decendants, with a modest amount on the McCaffrey side. I remember visiting Mary Jane's daughter, Helena, when I was just a boy! Please respond to my email address, below, and lets share some info! By the way, I'm in Winchester, MA -- just north of Boston. I believe that some of the McCaffreys moves out of state (Texas?).

Best,
Thomas Byrne
tbyrne@post.harvard.edu

My grandmothers family in Chatham, Ont. Canada were lighthouse keepers and there were some articles written about them quite a whlie ago . The articles states they are direct decendants of Jaques Cartier. The article was written about lighouses and that information was included. There are also some family stories that have information about our family history. I am doing family histories so I am trying to find out everything about both sides of my family. The only way to find out information is to follow leads and ask questions about information you already have.

Harjes CARTIER - Elisebeth CONN

I'm trying to figure out how Harjes Cartier figures in to the jewelry magnate's family tree. I think that Harjes is a middle name, not a first name, which has me tripped up. I'd like to find out who his brothers, sisters and parents were. I believe Jacques Cartier, who managed the Cartier operation before the war, might be one.

I do know that he married Elisebeth Conn of New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1945 at the American Cathedral in Paris.

Any help is appreciated!
Hello,
I am looking for the parents of Charles Carty-Cartier he was married to 3 women, his first wife was Adelaide Lajeunesse-Saumier , his second was Adelaide Fournaise and third was Domitilde Lajoie.
I am in need of any information about the children and/or grandchildren of Harry Odell Cartier b. 11 Jan. 1904 in Idaho and d. March 1986 in North or South Carolina. I believe Harry and his wife had four children including a son, Harry O. Cartier, Jr., and their youngest daughter they called "Dixie". They had two girls and two boys. Harry Sr. and his wife lived in North Carolina for most of their lives and ran an antique business in later years. Harry's real last name is Carter, but he changed it to Cartier as an adult.
Thanks, Kathy

I know your posting is old, but I have some info for you.
Elmira Rheume(b. abt 1860) married James Carey. They had two children I know of: Mary Jane Carey McCaffrey (b. 1884) and George William Carey, Sr (b.1887). There may have been more. I'm a McCaffrey. She was my great-grandmother. She died in 1923 in Lincoln N.H. and is buried in Laconia. I have a pretty good list of descendants but not much going backwards.

The Programme de Recherche en Démographie Historique is a research project at the University of Montréal, run by professional genealogists. Is the most thorough and accurate source of information for the period up to 1800, bar none.

The URL is http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/

Detailed data is available on a subscription basis (you buy credits, so you only pay when you are actually using it).
