james carton la salle illinois john a carton

James was listed as the father of John A (b. 1836 NY) in the US biographical dictionary, Ackley Iowa. They originated from Illinois, and before that New York etc.

John A listed his mother as from Van Damiens Island Tasmania. In another census he is listed as mulatto. Possible aboriginal connections, but then again later in life he listed his mother as "Tasmanian English", and the father from Rhode Island whom I presume to be James Carton who settled Ottawa Illinois. Any information on this family from any books? Thanks!

Mark

She was 78.

Pat was born and raised in Coshocton, Ohio, the daughter of Thomas and Irene Carton.

She attended the Ladywood School in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Coshocton. She also attended the University of Wisconsin and the Ohio State University.

At the University of Wisconsin, she met her husband, Keith C. ("K.C.")

This is David Emerson Carton. John Emerson was my Grandfather. Jack is my Uncle and Ted is my Dad. You are my cousin's son. I too have heard the Staten Island stories. The only info I heard was that at one time someone made an attempt to gather up all the names of Christina Marlatt's descendants for a lawsuit. As they would be heirs.

I would be interested to know about the Emerson middle name as much as anybody since I share it. I do not believe there is a direct connection.

Yes I have a Marlatte's/Carton folder. This folder was put together between 1970-1980. We did pursue a genealogist who was familiar with County Meath, IR.
They were not able to find any relevant records for Michael Mathew Carton ancestors in the historic records. If Major MM Carton was a member of the Irish police prior to 1835/36, he would probably have joined the very earliest from of the Irish Constabulary - the Peace Preservation Force. (PPF)was established in IR in 1816, and it drew its members from the ranks of soldiers demobilised from the British army. MM's rank would seem to substantiate that this may indeed have been his background. By a process of deductive reasoning, if we are correct, and our Carton ancestors lived in County Meath in the 1820,30, and early 40's, then they almost certainly lived in the civil parish of Kilsharvan. There are no census fragments for this parish. This genealogist did recommend, if we wanted to pursue further, that we contact a genealogist in England who was familiar with the service records of ranks of soldiers. We have not pursued.
I'm overwhelmed with your info on Ann McLelland and her family. If you have anymore info about William and Lady Douglas I sure would like to know more. Thank you so much.
Are you related to Irene Ketelsen? She has the 1970-80's info on the Cartons and I think the Marlatte's.
Email me tishgeehan@q.com and I can tell you more.
Tish

Barbara, how wonderful to hear from you. A year ago I e-mailed you. Justin said something about your changing computers. Yesterday, I e-mailed Justin to get your Dad's phone #.
I met Bob and Jean several years ago at a Myrtle Standley- Carton family reunion at Cottage Grove.
I was hoping Bob could tell me why MO & Jennie and the kids moved to Central Point around 1912. Maybe you could get the info for me and let me know. I do have a photo of the farm.
I asked Justin to provide copies of the family history I had gathered up...as it was getting very costly to mail out to all the cousins. I thought if he could be the person for his family members to contact for copies that would have been very helpful for me. Email me for further details on family copy he has. Otherwise I will send you a copy. I'm in the process of pulling the remaining Belford-Carton history together. Do Email me, I would like to hear from you.
tishgeehan@q.com

Hi Tish - Here is another Carton relative. I'm one of 6 children born to Robert William Carton & Mary Imajean Martin-Carton. I too only know back to Major Michael Mathew Carton, County of Meath, Ireland m. Anne McLennand.Son Charles Michael Carton m. Christina Jonas Marlott-Shook, Mathew Ostrander Carton M. Jennie May Belford, children Martha Orean Carton (my mother called her Aunt Orean), Christine Carton b 9/24/1894 d. 2/1895, William Albert Carton, John Emerson Carton m. Margerth Davis (divorced) 2nd wife Alice Cleone Keene-Carton.Children Jack E. Carton, Elnora May Carton-Lamb, Robert William Carton (my father) and Ted Belford Carton. My parents Robert William and Mary Imajean (Jean) had 6 children. Robert Gary Carton, Valerie Lynn Carton-Means, Bonnie Lee Carton-Estill, Karen Cleone Carton-White, John Ausbon Carton, Barbara Jean Carton-Wells (me). I have 3 children. I would love to hear anything that you come up with. I received a copy of a hand typed geneology from Malcom (Mac) Carton in 1999. This info was gathered 1978 & 1980. There probably isn't anything new to this other than where I fit in. Would love to hear from you. My grandfather John E. Carton had a falling out with his brother Albert Carton after their father died and John left the Seattle area and lived in California before settling in Medford, Oregon. I grew up in Grants Pass just 5 miles South of Medford. The duplex ranch house still sits on Carton Way. Grandfather donated the land for airport in Medford and they built the roads. We have pictures and lived there a short time when I started school.I can send you a copy of what I have if you care to have it. You may already since you are from the Washington area and I understand there used to be Carton Reunions that we never knew about until a few years back.

I'm looking for any information/family connections on a Rachael Carton. She was born in NJ, possibly Sept 4, 1856. Her parents according to a census were born in Ireland. I can't find her in NJ, only in Philadelphia, when she was married to John D. Reed (married on 3/1/1875). She died in Philadelphia, at Jefferson Hospital 3/21/1901. Her parents are not listed on the death certificate. She and Reed had 7 known children. Not sure if this might be my Rachael, but I did find a 1870 census with a Rachel and Sarah Carton living with a family named Saville in Philadelphia. Only states parents are foreign born, but has her age at 17, which birth year would be 1854, not 1856.

Do you know anything about this book.

Jean Brewer
St. Louis, Missouri USA

PS thought I replyed to this posting yesterday but don't see it here so here it is again.

I can't believe it. You're not a distant cousin, more like a 2nd cousin. Yes, I definately remember Joyce. When I'm doing Carton-Belford genealogy Joyce is always in my thoughts.
I will let you know how things are progressing with the Cartons.
Reg. the Belfords, I'm finding their name in County Wexford.
At this point I'm not sure if this is our direct family line.
Reg.William Mnotie Belford, I often wondered which family side the name Mnotie came from. I think this name is another spelling of Mcnulty.
I have some things to share with you reg. Marlatt family.
Tish Geehan
tishgeehan@q.com

Jean, Unfortunately,I don't know anything abou Thomas Carton, however, I have to ask you if you know if Thomas Carton, whom you say lived in Wexford-IReland, had a brother by the name Michael Mathew Carton? Do you know which county in Ireland Thomas was born?
Tish Geehan
tishgeehan@q.com
Michael Mathew Carton Major to Charles Michael Carton to Mathew Ostrander Carton to Martha Orean Carton to my grandfather Carton Fremont Taylor. You may have met my mother Joyce Madele Taylor. She was an avid genealogist who spent many of her last years immersed in our family history. Thankfully, she kept fairly complete records, but as I'm just beggining to learn how to do research, it will take me quite soem time to be able to fill her shoes.
If you have any luck finding more about this famly, I would love to hear how as well. I have several families coming out of Ireland and the information on them stops about this same generation. Thanks for your time and intrest.

At this time, my cousins and I are hoping to find Michael Mathew Carton through a genealogy service. Hopefully they will be able to find a source to start with. According to our Carton family history, Our Michael Mathew was a Major in the (Royal) Constabulary Force in County Meath, Ireland. Hopefully, by starting with J Herlihy's book--Royal Irish Constabulary, some sort of information on MM Carton will be found. That would be a start.
Back in the 1800's where records were kept, the building burned down. Then, in 1920 they decided "old records." didn't need to be kept. I assume you are a distant cousin, who was your Carton ancestor?
Have you had any luck researching this family? (Major Michael Carton and his wife Anne McLennand and six children set sail in 1846.) I recently inherited the family research from my mom and noticed that this is where our history ends for our Carton family. Any info you can pass on would be wonderful. Thank.

Jason, a year later, here I am.
Do you have the Carton history book and the Marlattfamily history book? Actually, these are not books, but an accumulation of family names, location and information, bound together in a folder.
Your grandfather John, is he the brother of William Albert and Orean Carton/Taylor?
Reg. stories, sad to say-- most of them are not true.
My cousins and I contacted an genealogy researcher and are in the process of getting another one for Meath County, Ireland. To our surprise we think our Cartons are French Huguenonts.
I'm living in bellingham, WA. If you need to get ahold of me.

A quick update as I had more I hadn't looked at re Carton/Burns. Yes, its Thomas & Mary Burns, parents of Mary
b.c.Co. Wexford m.Kilrush 1838 Martin Roche. Then follow the details I already gave you. The ship etc.
The 1840 Griffith Valuation, Barony of Scarawalsh, Union of Eniscorthy, Parish of Kilrush, Ballam. Ord. Map S.10 records Thos. Carton rented house and land there. As you can see if you can pinpoint exactly where in Wexford it helps. Your reference re marriage of Thos. and Mary elswhere still makes sense.I researched this personally in Melbourne State Library Griff. records,so lots of valid info here. Sounds like the same family. Note your email address but just responding here as it is convenient right now.

Another passenger on the Liverpool was a Biddy Carton aged 16, maybe a sister. Mary's parents were ...Carton/Mary Burns. Incidentally Martin Roche's mother was a Mary Cartin. Thomas' parents names were Michael Ward and Elizabeth Tobin. Possibly Michael and Elizabeth also from Gorey.

Any information from anyone, researching these names, will be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you for your time and trouble.

Jean

Carton Family Stories

Hi, there have been stories in my family for generations and I was looking for some help separating the fact from fiction. One story is that we are related to the famous poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. I've never found a connection between his family and ours, so it would be fun to finally nail down the connection. Also there is a rumor that Christina Jones Marlatt stood to gain a deed that would give her the entirety of Staten Island. However, I have yet to actually see the dead, or see in the historical records of Staten Island about this. Any help on clearing up these stories would be great. Also on family research.org there are some serious holes in my Carton family history. If anyone could provide me with some family tree info that would be great. A quick break of my family history is as follows:

Michael Carton > Charles Michael Carton > Mathew Ostrander Carton > John Emerson Carton > Jack Emerson Carton > Jan Carton > Justin Carton (Me).

Thanks

Justin Carton

Carton family

Hi all American Cartons from a Wexford Carton
The following brief history (as far as I know it) may be of help.
As you may know the English ruled Ireland during the 1800's. Land Lords used forced emigration as a means of reducing the number of tenants on their Estates. Most emigrant ships sailed from Ireland (and England at times )to Canada. While many settled in Canada large numbers moved into the U.S. in due course. The Famine years(1840's) saw a huge increase in emigrationto both Canada and the U.S. Conditions were so bad and deaths so numerious that the Ships were called "Coffin Ships"
One of the most interesting events relates to a Roman Catholic Priest(Fr Thomas Hore)who led a group of people from the Wexford/Wicklow border areas to the U.S. in 1850 Fr Hore had already ministered in Richmond Verginia from 1820 to 1827. He became friendly with Bishop Byrne of Little Rock Arkansas who invited him and his parishoners to settle in his Diocese. Fr Hore accepted the invitation feeling that it would be better for the people to move to America rather than die from statvation.
The journey took them from Ireland to Liverpool to New Orleans. They sailed in three Ships Ticonderoga, Loondianah, and Chasca. Some 400 families made the journey in cluding Cartons,Halls,Dorans, and Hamiltons. Some remained in New Orleans others went to Littlerock, and Fort Smith.A number of families settled to St Louis, while more went to Iowa where the town of "Wexford" was established.
One other group from Wexford settled in Refio Texas in 1830 Not sure if Cartons were among them.
Carton is a derivative of the name MacCartain(the Gaelic Version)originaly from the Northern Counties. It is likely that they came to Wexford as part of the Melisha sent to quell the Wexford uprising of 1798.
I am not sure if my own branch of the family has any connection with those that emigrated to the U.S. I do intend however to do more research in this regard.
Mick Carton

Carten/Carton Etc Spelling

Hi Jim
The Irish language was used by most people in Ireland in the last Centuary. When the families emigrated to Canada and the U.S. the name MacArtain (direct translation in English is Carton )was often written down as Carten, Cartain, Cartin, and sometimes Carton. Pronounceation and local dialects would have accounted for most of these changes. However, it is also likely that the Irish themselves were not sure of the "written" English version of the name either.
Please see my other contribution on the Message Board re Wexford Group to St Louis etc in 1850
Many other Emigrents left Wexford in the 1800's. Most of them would have gone to Canada in the first instance and no doubt some settled in Quebec. Some of course subsequently crossed over into the U.S.
More information on Irish Names can be got on www.scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/magazine/surnameshtml and irishroots.net
Hope this is some help.
regards Mick

I have just found a letter written by my grandfather in 1927 explaining about the Chidgey family to his son Harry ,thought you may be interested.

“George John Chidgey came to the colony with his brother Joseph. They arrive out in the year 1832. May 3rd on the Barque Sir William Wallace (Carter Captain) of 262 tons region. They were born at Kent England. George (Father) married Margaret (Mother) Carton, who was born at Ramsfort, Gorey. Country of Wexford Ireland daughter of Luke Carton who was Sargeant (whether of police or army I cannot find out). Father was born in 1815 died 1891.

He was a grand nephew of Francis Grose, who was born at Croydon Crooks,in Surrey, educated for the Military Service ……………..His father was Francis Grose, an Artist and Antiquary, a great acquaintance of Bobby Burns.

N.D. Stanhouse one of fathers most intimate friend,.and also one of the leading scholars of NSW researched for Dad’s antecedents. It said that the first Chidgey that came to England was an officer in the Army of William the Conqueror when whey invaded England, so I suppose we sprang originally from the French.

P.N George & Joseph Chitty – an error

ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE HELPFUL
HELEN KENNEDY
eyeken@bigpond.net.au

James Carton

Terry, I am interested to know if your dad has any info on a Eugene Carten, emigrated to America, from Ireland, with wife and children 1849-1853. His wife was Julia Kenny Carten. Eugene died during the voyage and was buried at sea. I have found several of my ancestors with the name spelled Carton, although we always spelled it Carten. I have no dates on Eugene, but his wife Julia was born 1798, Ireland. All children born Ireland, Thomas 1826, James 1834, John 1840, Bridget 1846. These are the children I have confirmed to be their children. There are others, David, William, Julia, Richard, Edward, that I have not confirmed as yet. I am a direct descendent of James. Any info or insight you can add, please email me at fucowy@swbell.net

Thanks Sue Hamilton

Sorry, but my Bridget Carten was born in 1846. She was married to James Hall in St. Louis, Mo. I don't know if they were from Wexford. My James and Bridget arrived about 1850, and settled in St. Louis, Mo.

Hiram Carton

I am looking for a connection to St. Joseph, Mo. and a John Cartin. Is Barry County close to St. Joe? John Cartin was a boiler maker, listed in the 1890 St. Joe, Mo. City Directory. There were other Cartons in Mo., i.e. Dennis, James. Do you know anything about Hiram Carton? I believe the rest of the family was living in St. Louis. Please email me at fucowy@swbell.net for more info. Thanks Sue Hamilton
