Donna, If you're still working on the Cartwrights from Blackshear, GA I would love to hear from you. I believe Thomas and Delilah's daughter Ada May is the same person as Katharine May Cartwright who married Kenneth Barr and went to Muskegon, MI. Katharine was from Blackshear, GA per a newspaper article shortly after she and Ken returned to MI after his 4 years in the service. My uncle said his grandmother lived to be 100 and died around 1970. Matches Delilah and his other grandmother died much much earlier in MI.
Cheryl

Four Cartright households in Pike Co Alabama 1866 census

Listed in the special census are the neighboring households of Jas.CARTRIGHT; Lenard CARTRIGHT; Nancie CARTRIGHT; Jane CARTRIGHT. No other first names listed but under Nancie's household is this note (one soldier killed)...I assume it refers to the Civil War. Also listed as neighboring household is Hugh GEORGE (whose wife was Mary A Cartright/Catrett). I wonder if these families were kin? Can anyone give me ANY information on the Cartright households which may help me finally break down my 'brick wall' -- Best Regards, Judy

Death of Sergeant J. G. W. Cartright - 1864

Taken from the Houston Telegraph, Texas, 23 September 1864

Died - At Lynchburg, Virginia, on the 4th of June, after a long and painful illness, from a wound received in the battle of the Wilderness, Sergeant J. G. W. Cartright, Company "H" 4th Texas Regiment. For more than three long years he has nobly battled for the South, his native soil. But, alas! that noble and generous spirit has been taken from our midst, which has caused a void which no other can fill

No nobler life could the patriot wish to live, and no nobler death could the hero wish to die.

"Sleep on, dear Jimmy, one last farewell;
The fairest flower must fade -
With no fit tribute left to tell
The mourner where it laid.

September 23d       H.T.S.

Palphanie Melvine and Jasper Green Cadenhead were my great grandparents on my mother's side. I've just started my genealogy search and I'm new at this but according to my uncle Palphanie and Jasper only had one daughter named Mary Anne Elizabeth Cadenhead. She married a man named William Horace Ford. Mary Anne Elizabeth and William Horace Ford had nine children: Bessy, Bertha (my mother),Willie,Clifford,Fredie,Ellis,Elmer,Alton, Auston and Mary Gladys. It's also my understanding that Palphanie was cherokee. I hope this information helps you. I don't have any documentation. Like I said I've just started my search.

I am also looking for info on Mary Cartright (Catrett), she married Hugh (Hughie) George. Mary was born in NC, Hugh was born in AL. It is suspected that there is a lot of indian blood in our line. Mary and Hugh had a dau. Mary Perthinia Melvinia George who married Green Jasper Cadenhead. I am awaiting documentation of the indian connection from a cousin inTexas. There is also a Catrett connection from Pike County Alabama. Are we connected? Joyce

Re: Mary Jane Cartright (Cartwright?)

Joyce,

I don't know if we're connected or not. My Mary Jane Cartwright married Levi Thomas in Lauderdale County, AL on Oct 22 or 23, 1868. The marrige certificate states her name as Cartwright. They had 2 sons, John Nelson Thomas b. 1870 and William Henry Thomas b. April 1872. William Henry was my gr-grandfather. Mary Jane is burried in Gravelly Springs Cemetery in Lauderdale Co. I was told that Levi was burried there as well, but cannot find him on the list at that cemetery.

If I remember correctly, it states her birthplace or maybe place of residence was Dart, AL which is a tiny community NW of Florence just below the TN/AL state line. My cousin thinks that they spent time both in Lauderdale Co, and Savannah, TN. Savannah is just north of the state line where AL and MS meet on the Tennessee River. My cousin tells me that she was Creek. I have copies of a few very old photograhs of her and maybe her mother which I've attached. There is confusion about one of the photos as to who's picture it is. One story I've been told is that her mother came to visit, got up in the middle of the night, and was never seen or heard from again.

I would be interested in hearing what your cousin in TX finds out. Thanks, Alisa
