Hi,

I am a great granddaughter of Nettie C. Duarte. Unfortunately she passed this May. I had hoped to see her again this coming January, but instead am trying to reach out to her family as well. Americus Duarte is my great grandfather. They had a son Albert whom is my grandfather. His wife, Dorothea, is a native of Guam, and where he lived with her. They have 5 children who reside on Guam and Arizona.

I know your post is old, but hope we can connect and share more information.

Thank you!
Joleen

Joleendrodriguez@gmail.com
She married a Manuel Benton and the lived in Massachusetts. Is this the same family? If so, I'd love any information! Thank you for your time. Stephanie

Searching for long lost side of family

Here is what I know. My grandfather was Joseph Carvalho. He was born in the Azores(Punta Del Gado(sp?) I beleive) in 1919. He had a brother Manny(Manuel) and a sister Ermalinda. They migrated with their parents(who I have NO IDEA of their names) in the 1920's to the Massachusetts area. Ermalinda aka Aunt Emily married someone names Edward or Eddie but nobody remembers his last name. My grandfather served in the US Army during WWII. He met my grandmother Helen Odessa Bearden in San Diego around 1938 and they were married shortly afterwards. They had five children. Rachel Carvalho Moll, Emily Eileen Carvalho,June Marie Carvalho,Richard Yale Carvalho, and Roy Dale Carvalho. After the war, my grandfather settled in Northern California as a pipe fitter, finally settling in Napa, Ca where he died in 1977. I have been told that my grandfather's mother's maiden name was Fortunado and that we are also related to some Cabral family members who also settled in Northern Ca. Anyone with ANY info, please contact me at alacey23@comcast.net
Thank you

What???!!! They threw it out.. I guess people just don't know what they are looking at sometimes...About his parents names..I'm not sure, maybe it's a way of keeping track of his family. I think this because my mother-in-law signs all her legal papers in Portugal with her maiden name before her married name, but here the US she signs with only her married name. I don't know if that helps...When naming children, children will have both their mother's name and their father's name. I think this was cutomary to have you parents names on legal documents, maybe as witnesses too..Just some ideas, don't know for sure.

So we are like distant cousins then, eh? very cool.
Amy

The Reis' emigrated to Hawaii in 1882, from Calhetas, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel. Their parish was Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. The traveled to Hawaii on the SS Dalhousie. I only have information on the Reis side and on the Carvalho's once they arrived in Oakland/San Leandro, Ca. Cheers, Duane

We have a reprint of Solomon's book crossing the USA mid 1850's and a copy of David Nunes daughters book about his forensic work on Ink criminal cases Any info welcome Nancy Atkinson(nee Ffrench)

Have sent you a message via your email address. No charge on the marriage and birth certificate as the cost was a few cents, I couldn't do more for you because I was limited in time trying to finish some things on my own family. Got lucky on the Araujo family, by finding 4 birth certificates. Now my files are well rounded with all the connecting families to the Siva Sampaio's in Hawaii. We are having a very first family reunion this 21 July in Hilo. What you can do is just keep sharing the "Aloha".
take care, waipili

Have another good find for you, their "Record of Issue of License to Marry." Went to the Oahu Archives for you and found: Refino de Jesus Carvalho age 34 residence Kaiwiki, S. Hilo. {Father is J.B. Carvalho, Mother is Mrs. M. Carvalho} married to Maria Jesus Martins, age 16yrs. 6mons. (Her father name John Martins, Mothers name Mrs. M. Martins} on April 14, 1904. Now the sad thing is, they did not put the true surnames of the mothers, just their husbands name. I'd like to send you the copies, if you would send me your address. If this was done in S. Hilo, cermony performed by a "Father Olive", then this will also be on file at the St. Joseph Church. Since on of my family line is Martins, I have found the various spellings of Martines,and/or Martinez. When the Portuguese were coming in as plantation workers, so to were the Spanish. That's why when doing name searches, you have to be open to any and all possible mispelling of any name. Another example is Silva spelled as Sylva. Or Sampaio as Sampia, or Sampaia, and on one death document that took me years to fine via the Board of Health was spelled Sampai. I was lucky that someone their figured it had to be family, and it was. Take care, and hope all the infomation on Rufino/Maria was helpful in your endeavor on your family research. With aloha, waipili

I hope this is your family. I have a birth certificate for a child named, "Frank Thomas Carvalho" born Dec 19, 1910.
His father was "Rufino de Jesus Carvalho, age 41 and residence Waiakea, Hilo. This childs mother was, "Maria de Jesus Martinez" age 23, born in Waiakea, Hilo. It also states that this child born is the 4th or 4 living. This was a find from the Pacific Rm, Hawaii Library on King street, Oahu. Also for the same parents, another child born 3/25/1908, named Natividade de N. Came from T.H. Births 1896-1909 Index. No certificate since their microfilms start from 1909. take care, waipili

If the Medeiros is related to us it would be via a marriage that Ill get back to you on as right at the moment Ive misplaced it (dont dat always happen :p) Ok As far as I can tell there is no reasoning behind Gran naming Connie or any of her others for that matter I was on that one too she really distanced herself from Vovos naming techniques (maybe cause she didnt want to beat a dead horse no more you know Gran)The woman was stubborn to a fault...As far as the articles I need thoughts on the subject... I was going to post it but its about suicide (allegedly) Many believe it was a murder and truthfully speaking having studied the case I feel the same way. It is history but it might hurt those who come across it and it features her in a pretty bad light that even my mom took offense to never wanted to talk on the matter but always said "it was murder...final!", it wasnt who she was and many know this to be true it was the husband that originally reported abuse for reasons unknown...What do you think? Ill be more than happy to send them to you privately I have the same addy as before for this site, shoot me an email and Ill forward it to you.
Jimmys BD is 2 Feb. 1952, any Marin/Laslo births are Connies theres 5 in total go to my tree and click on Grans to get to Connie I have all the names of children by her there.
Rocky was Uncle Mikes Son with Aunt Marge. I believe Uncle Mikes proper name was John Micheal. Candy and Chuck were from her first marriage to Grant Campbell.

Yes, the age factor is quite a concern. But stuff that happens today, did happen back then as well (but not as much). Consider error by the person that documented what you are reading is also a possiblity and common. So many times I have come with mix ages on the same person on different documents. Hopefully, that 11 was suppose to be 17?
