I recently came across this small article in the Rockland, Maine Courier-Gazette archives:

From the Rockland Courier-Gazette of July 7, 1885:

The Tramp (name of the column)

"The venerable Reuben Carver of Vinalhaven, nearly 88 years of age, is one of those few gentlemen who remember distinctly events of years ago and is able to tell them in an entertaining and lucid manner. Mr. Carver has retained all his faculties in a remarkable state of perfection. He recently discoursed pleasantly as follows concerning old times at Vinalhaven Harbor, as it was originally called:

“In 1766 my father, Thaddeus Carver, then a lad of sixteen, came with his father and older brother in a sloop from Marshfield, Mass., and landed on what is now Calderwood’s Neck. Israel and Amos Carver came at the same time. Israel settled where we landed, on the north side of the Neck, built him a house and brought up his family there. James Calderwood now owns the farm, and has built his house on the site of the old one.

“My father lived here until he became of age, and then hired out to Capt. Waterman of North Haven at four dollars per month, afterwards coming back to the island. About the time father became of age a man named Cogswell came from Ipswich and built two mills on the stream, where the polishing mill now stands. Father worked with him awhile and in 1774 bought the mill and privilege together with eight hundred acres of land. About 1780 the mill was carried away by a freshet. The stream lay idle from that time until I built a mill. I put up a saw, shingle, lath and grist mill and ran it about thirty-five years.

“In 1826 I commenced building vessels at the head of this dock on the beach. I constructed thirteen in all. My first vessel was the Plymouth Rock. She was a schooner of 140 tons and was built for Boston parties. This schooner, the first one built on the island, carried the first cargo of granite ever taken from the island. She was called a large vessel in those days. The last one I built was schooner Island Home, a little over 200 tons. She was launched in 1866 or somewhere in that vicinity.

'In 1830 there was one house in sight from where my house now stands. This one lone house was on Lane’s Island, then called Griffin’s Island. My father used to speak of the frequent visits of British shaving mills during the troublesome-revolutionary times. They would come to here on foraging expeditions.”
Re: Kentucy Carvers

The Carver line in Kentucky in the Barren County area can be traced back to Archibald Carver in Stafford County, Virginia to circa 1720, married to Hannah Bussey. My line of Carvers from Archibald are:

Richard Carver b. ~1764 in Albemarle, Virginia
Willis Carver, b. ~1801 in Spartanburg District, SC - d. Oct. 1861 in SC
Milton Carver, b. 2 Jul 1848 in Pickens District, SC - d. in 1923 in Granite, OK
Arthur Carver, b. 14 Jul 1889, White House, Sumner County, TN - d. 31 Jul 1982 in Harbor City, CA
Chester Carver, b. 6 Nov 1924 in Carver City, OK
and me, Howard Carver, b. Jun 1951 in Mangum, OK
Shaun Carver (my son), b. Jul 1985 in Torrance, CA

I received LOTS of information on the Kentucky Carvers from a fellow named William Dee Carver, Sr., born in 1939 in Barren County, Kentucky, who was a resident of Louisville, KY at the time (back several years ago). His line of Carvers go back to Archibald as mine do. His father was Willie Jewell Carver, b. 1913 in Austin, KY; His father was William Bartholomew Bartlett Carver, b. 1880 in Austin, KY; his father was John A. Carver, b. 1846 in Palmeria, TN; his father was William Carver, b. 1815, Barren County, KY; his father was Batholomew Bartlett Carver, b. ~1793 in North Carolina; his father was Cornelius Carver, Jr., b. 1769 in Albemarle County, VA; his father was Cornelius Carver, b. 1749, Louisa, VA; his father was Archibald Carver, b. ~1720 in Stafford County, VA.

Archibald and Hannah Bussey Carver's children were:
Joseph Carver
William B. Carver
Cornelius Carver
James Carver
Thomas Carver
Richard Carver

Here's some notes on Archibald from my tree:

WILLS & DEEDS: Albemarle Co. (1768-1776)
Pg 1 Archibald sold land (100 acres) to son William. The land was next to that owned by his other son, Joseph. A James Carver sold 75 acres in Fredericksville Parish to a Robinson for $40 on 7 Feb 1776 (Deeds 1768-1776 pg 110).

LAND PATENT: Virginia Land Patent Book 31, 20 Sept 1751-10 Sept 1755 Part 1

Archibald Carver (b. 1720/1729 d. before 27 July 1771)
Don Longworth, descendant, Warrenton, VA, states that Archibald is the father of this family. The first son is Joseph, Jr., suggesting that Archibald's father may be Joseph.

Archibald probably came to Louisa County, VA, by 1749, possibly from Goochland County. He was born before 1728 and married circa 1745, probably in Stafford County where Hannah, his wife, was born. He was a planter and speculated in land in Louisa and Albemarle counties until around 1765. He was in Bedford County for a short time where Joseph had gone. He left no records in Bedford County so it is supposed that he went back to Albemarle after a short period of time. He was deceased in 1771.

The names Archibald, Archelaus, Archilles, Archilius, etc., are all considered to be the same name. The Carvers could have been Quakers, thus the lack of colonial marriage records. There may have been a connection with Capt. William Carver, who was executed by Royal Governor Sir William Berkeley for his role in Bacon's Rebellion in 1676.

Archibald was in Fredericksville Parish, Louisa County, VA in 1768. In the Gendex file, an Archibald Carver married Elizabeth Fouts (lived in Fulton County, IL, son of P.M. Carver and Elizabeth, daughter of Dougan Fouts) and one married Hannah. The latter is this Archibald.

1749 19 Sep - Archibald Carver bought property 400A on Thompson's Swamp in the fork of Contrary River, Louisa County, VA. for 30 pounds from James Roach.

1752 - the same property was sold by Archibald and his wife, Hannah. (Deed Books, Louisa Co. VA, A and B, 1742-1759, Louisa Co., VA, a 1739 patent).

Let me know if I can be of further assistance in your search. I'm more than happy to pass on information.

Howard Carver
Long Beach, CA

His name was Joseph L. Carver born 1827 in Missouri. He married Miranda B. Ritter October 10, 1848, in St. Francois Co., Mo., by William Garrett, Justice of the Peace. They had 7 children: Elizabeth Jane who married William Henry Medley, Mary Margaret who married Solomon Hakes first then married John Edward Thompson, James Richard who married Elizabeth (LNU), Louisa Emily who married Jesse Knithen Nash, Darcus, William Charles, and Jemima Ellen who married Daniel Boone Thompson.

Joseph L. Carver's parents were Richard Carver and Mary A. (LNU) and they have been a brick wall for everyone. I have not been able to find anyone who knows anything further back than Richard and Mary. The only reason we know their first names and where they were born is the census'.

I am looking for information on James Richard, what was his wife's maiden name, how many children did he have, was one of them named Esco?

Contact me if you are still looking for information.

Wiley Carver married Mary Ann Pharrow in Forsyth County, Ga. I have a copy of the certificate. She was called "Polly" and the surname had many variations in the spelling-Farrow, Farrell, Pharrow. They were the gg-grandparents of my late husband, Roy Weldon Carver, and are buried in the County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens County, GA where I live.

Hope this helps.

Janie B. Morgan

James B:03/21/1840 d:03/14/1917 Huntington WV m Caroline Bromage b:11/05/1848 d:04/14/1927 Hungtinton WV

John b:09/09/1842 d:02/25/1912 Charleston WV m Margaret Jones

Eli b:02/17/1845 d:06/25/1864 Drowned

Mary Ann b:03/12/1851 d:06/29/1894 Charleston WV

Enoch b:07/24/1855 d:10/15/1915 Charleston WV m Francis Josephine Clewell b:01/10/1858 d:04/13/1942

As you can see I have Caroline Bromage married to James and not John. I have a copy of the death certificate that states she was married to James. Her parents were John Bromage and Catherine? Jones.

Caroline's sister Sarah married James' 1st cousin Thomas Carver whose father is Oliver Carver who is the brother to Aaron. Their Parents are Sampson Carver and Mary Gullifer.

I hope this helps. Should you have info that shows this info differently, please let me know

PA in 1860 I have her census images for 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, & 1910. You know she married a Scottish man William Salton about 1877?
No, Moses Carver is a descendant of Christian Carver b. 1759 Northampton, PA who went to Surry Co., NC, then to Ohio and Illinois.Christopher was b. 1756 Lancaster Co., PA and went to Lincoln Co., NC. If there is any relation is has not been found. AND it has NEVER been proven that Christopher is the son Christopher who was supposedly the son of John and so on back to the Carvers of Bucks Co., PA who were from England. It just keeps getting posted from person to person. You are from Israel whose family went to the Smokemont area and lived...I am from David C. who stayed in Haywood Co.

Hi,

Will reply to this 2004 posting of yours. Hope email still valid. You state:

2 Michael Carver b: Bet. 1784 - 1787 in Surry Co., NC d: Abt. 1818 in Prob. IN
.... +Elizabeth Chandler b: Abt. 1780 in North Carolina m: 21 Jul 1804 in Surry Co., NC d: Abt. 1834 in Illinois Father: William Chandler

I am interested in Elizabeth Chandler who md. Michael Carver. (I believe she may have married a second time after Michael's death?)

Anyhow, you state Elizabeth was the daughter of William Chandler. Do you have documentation for this?? I really hope so as I am trying to locate a William Chandler after he left NC.

Can you tell me exactly where Michael/Elizabeth went after leaving NC?? Did they go first to KY then TN?? or to TN then KY?? Then did they go on to IL??

Any help most appreciated. Thanks. Cheryl

Georges address of Birth is "13 Dyers Buildings".

I've not been able to find a definite match on any census records for George until after he married my Great great great Grandmother MATILDA ADAMS in 1864 in Lambeth, London.

George and Matilda only had 1 son that I know of; George Carver born 1864 in Bermondsey, Surrey.

Thanks for any help!

Sam Carver.

Hi Sandie! My name is Lori. I am researching my family tree and came across your posts from 2000 and 2002. My great grandfather was a Carver from Barren County, KY. His name was Roy Elbert Carver (1903 - 1976). Roy married Lila Marie Wise and had a daughter named Alice Marie Carver (my grandma!). Roy's father was James Ambrose Carver (1864 - 1917). I believe James was married to Amanda Ora Ellen Harrison who was also from Barren County, KY. Do any of these names sound familiar? I'm hoping to find someone who has information on the Kentucky Carvers!! I thank you for your time!

Sincerely,
Lori

Not sure if you have found your info by now, since this is an old post. I believe the Lorena Carver you are looking for is listed in the 1900 Al census, Kymulga area, father John. She is listed as Renie. They Live next to Nathan Owens, who I believe is the brother of Adeline Owens/Owings, wife of B.R. Williamson.
