I am a descendant of Eli Cariveau and Emerence Tessier. I have Emerence death date as 15 Aug 1890 Gentilly, Polk, MN. Eli died 30 Dec 1913 Toppenish, Yakima, Washington. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Yakima. I went there a few years ago and took a photo of the stone, and read the burial record. I have collected quite a bit of information on these interelated families. The sure seemed to stick together as the migrated west from the Berthierville area of Quebec.

My big mystery is finding the parents of Eli Cariveau. Most of what I haev is posted on Ancestry. but I need to update it.

Scott Haney Deer Park, WA

June 23, 1960 in Grayling, MI
M. James Philias Carriveau on August 31,1885 in Oscoda, MI

On both of their death certificates their place of birth is listed as Canada, parents were listed as "unknown." James and Jenny lived in small towns in central Michigan, including Frederic and Grayling. They had 14 children, Eleven children lived to adult hood.

The children were: James Carriveau, Jr, Mrs. Dora Lord, Arthur Carriveau, Mrs. Eva McIntyre, Mrs. Metha Duncan, Mrs. Beatrice Beauchemin, Mrs. Mildred Selthoffer, Aloysius Carriveau, Irving Carriveau, of Detroit, Edward Carriveau of Flint, Mrs. Alice Orhn of Grayling.

I know that Jenny could read, write and speak French and English. As far as I know, she never became a U. S. citizen. She never spoke of her background.

There is a family story that James returned to the home of his family in Montreal, and when someone answered the door, they slammed it in his face. I don't think he ever spoke of his background either. James did become a naturalized U. S. citizen, but I haven't been able to track down the papers.

Think we may be related?

Hey, Patti....welcome back! I am now a very firm believer that the above spellings and other variations thereof are indeed all related. I have met the gal who put the Corriveau/Carriveau info up at geocities.com/Broadway/8244/etienne/jacques_l.html She is a cousin who grew up in Alpena county and had a curiosity about her genealogy. Her family uses the Carriveau spelling and I've found an obit of my great grandparents where my grandmother's married name was spelled that way too. I'd be interested in how/where you found your family moving around and once again how you go back where to original family. Good hunting.....Sharon in MI

Hi Julia;
Sorry to have to tell you this but there is a big mistake in your message.

1st: Emerence Tessier was maried like you said on nov 21st 1843 in Ste-Melanie Que. WITH THEOPHILE NEVEU and not with Elie Corriveau. She maried Elie Corriveau on Sept 16th 1856 in the parish of St-Peter in Gooderich Ontario. Elie was born in 1832.

2nd: They had 3 children; Joseph b. feb 5th 1858, he maried Josephine Giroux. Then the twins Emma and Edward on jan 26th 1860. She maried Mr. St-George and he maried Adeline Desrosiers on aug 12th 1889 in Gentilly Mn.
This is where I and a few of my fellows searchers are so far in searching Elie's parents. I have 320 descendants of this couple whitout knowing where he is from. If you have any idea, please let me know.

Thank you. Serge Corriveau

Hi Neil ! I can see you are exchanging with one
of the Coriveau descendants I have been chating
with in the past. For your search in France,
you'll have to look for François Courivaud who
maried Marguerite Bernard on Nov 14 1638 in
Fonclaireau, Angoulème. Their 3rd child Etienne
is the one who came to America in 1668 and started
the Corriveau lineage in north America. He is the
ancestor of all the Corriveau, Carvo, Curvo,
Carriveau and all others similar.
Wish you success in your search in France.

Serge Corriveau
sercori@sympatico.ca

Hi Patti !
Thank's for the info, it is very helpfull.

As your invitation for more specific info, I cannot
refuse such an invitation. I don't know if I told you
in the past or if you have seen it on the net but I wrote
a book on the Corriveau descendants wich contain 7300 of
the descendants of Etienne and I am preparing another
version more complete for next year. That is the reason I
accept your invitation and ask you if you can make me a
gedcom of the Corriveau line you have, if you are on computer.
If not, you can send me what you have as text to
sercori@sympatico.ca

Thank you so much!

Take Care and God Bless!

Serge Corriveau

Nevue and Carvo connection

Hello Neil,
I just scanned through the Carvo message board and saw your note. Eli Carriveau is the step father of my great great grandfather (Theophile Neveu). The Nevue family was living near Goderich Ontarion Canada when Timothee Neveu died. 2 Years later his widow (Emerance Tessier Neveu) married Eli Carriveau. They moved to Bay County Michigan in 1858 with all the Neveu children. They eventually moved to Meade Twp Huron Co Michigan and farmed there until 1881. At that time , Eli Carriveau and family (including some of the Neveus moved to Duluth Mn. Eli Carriveau moved to Crookston Mn (actually Russia Twp) abt 1885. Theophile Neveu and family followed abt 1890.

Edward and Emma Carriveau were twins born to Eli and Emerance. I'm not sure if there were any other children (maybe a Joseph - need to confirm). I think Emma stayed in Duluth (I need to check my files if this is important to you). Edward went to Crookston. The Neveus and Edward Carvo moved to Yakima Wash abt 1902. From what I can tell, Edward was the first one to shorten the name to Carvo.

Also FYI Theophile Neveu changed his last name spelling to Nevue. His brother (or at least his brother's family changed the spelling to Nephew.

I have more information (and more exact dates, property locations, census)in my files if you are interested.

Here is some information I am missing -

Eli Carriveaus's parents, brothers / sisters , date of birth and location.

Eli Carriveaus date of death and location. It was either Crookston area or Yakima.

Emmerence Tessier Nevue Carriveau date and place of death.

Verification of any other Carriveau children other than Edward and Emma.

Story about Edward and Emma.

Information about Emma and Edward decendents.

Hello Patti

Regards,

Tom

Hi Neil,

Forgive me for taking so long in touching back to this website. I have been busy with other things. Our Carvos are from CARIVEAU which we believe derived from the CORRIVEAU family. I have seen things which suggest that this family came from around the Bordeaux region of France. "Auvergne" or something like that. Serge Corriveau is a great contact for this sort of thing. You are welcome to e-mail me personally at: pwalrod@yahoo.com. Happy hunting! Patti

Neil, I go back thru Ralph Virginia Ducharme to Pierre Rose Derosiers to Pierre Pelagie Coutu to Pierre Marguerite Crevier dit St Jean to Jacque Angelique Reine Gautron. Good luck with your search. We are part of the group that stayed in MI. There is also a group here in MI that come from down south (can't remember where at the moment) but that's what makes it interesting keeps us alert!

Sharon: My Mother is Ethel Carvo, she is the daughter of Martin and Violet Carvo, Or Cariveau. Martin's Father Edward Joseph was Married to Adaline Marie Desrosier on 12 August 1889. As far as I can see Edward Joseph's father was Elie Cariveau. They started in Quebec - Michigan- Minnisota-and finally Washington. There were 10 children 2 Roy and Mary Died very young in 1904 and 1905. I hope that helps. If I find out any info from over here I will put it on the message board. Keep in touch Neil E. Jones.

Neil, do you go back to Etienne Corriveau Catherine Bureau family? Our Carvos go back to them and this past week have just been able to put together our Hamilton family too. Like Patty, we too are from Michigan; but believe her ancestors are then from the south? Ours remained from the Que, CN to MI line have stayed that way. What is your connection?

I am now residing in Marseilles France and if I do some fast looking I believe it could turn up some information about our ancestor's.There are several way's to spell the name and it has been changed at times, but the french no there history and there Geneology. So if you can help us I will be very glad to forward anything I do find. Thank you Sincerly
Neil E. Jones

I am researching the Carvo branch that started with Eli Cariveau and Mary Tessier. My grandfather was Philip Cariveau, son of Joseph and Josephine. I am trying to connect Eli Cariveau with the Corriveau line out of Quebec. The spelling has been changed somewhere along the line. My grandfather's Uncle Edward changed the spelling from Cariveau to Carvo. If you can shed any light on this family line, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kacey Carvo
