My Cary family resided in the Village of Liverpool, Town of Salina, and Onondaga CO., NY. My 2nd GGmother was Maria Cary who married Charles Cogswell, and I believe that she was the daughter of Seth A. Cary. Seth was an original member of the Liverpool Methodist Episcopal Church formed in 1820.

There is a Seth A. Cary listed on the census for 1830, 1840 ("Carey") and 1850 in the Town of Salina- possibly Maria's father: Seth A. Cary, 39; Elsa, 37; George A. 14; Martha J. 7; Sabina M. (Maria?). 4; Mary L. 11; he is a laborer and all b. NY. Could Sabina M. be Maria?

1855 NY Census had Seth A. Carey (45, b. Cayuga Co), Elsa (42, b. Rensselaer Co), George (19), Mary (17), Martha (12), Maria (8), Lydia (1); children b. Onondaga Co., NY.

Does anyone have any additional information about this family? I have been unable to locate anything else.
Hi Kevin,

I was wondering if you had any John Cary in your research born between 1770-1790 give or take somewhere in New York.

My third great grandfather, Joshua Cary, would be his son. Joshua was born in 1808 in Albany County and lived his adult life in Otsego County. The only thing I know about his parents is: John Cary & Minnie Weldon/Waldon?. Both born in New York. Minnie possibly in Oneida county. My guess is between the years of 1770-1790 in order to be Joshua's parents.

I'm trying to track down any possibilities so I can cross them off. John Cary being a common name back then. There are a lot to shuffle through. So if you have any information, that would be great.

Thanks
Paula Cary

Hi Ruby!

Samuel and Delaina's son James Logan Cary was my great-great grandfather as well as my namesake as I am also James Logan Carey.

I think I've found one of the sites where you submitted some information in my searches. http://www.couchgenweb.com/family2/cary.htm

Most of my information has been from what I've found online. So some census scans from ancestry.com and the other couchgenweb sites detailing information about samuel and his siblings. I'd love to hear or see whatever you have to share!

James

James, was excited to see your post. From what son of Samuel Cary are you decended. My grandmother was a daughter of Sam Cary and Martha Bennett Edgar Cary.

I have quite a lot of info on the siblings of Samuel & James and their descendents. Nancy married & moved to Red River County, Texas and her brother andrew was living with Nancy's family in 1860. He married there before enlisted in a Texas Calvary unit; he was critically injured with a head wound in a battle in Mississippi near Corinth; do not know if he made it back to Texas.

I am going on vacation this week but will write back as soon as possible and let you know all the info I have. I am going to Jonesboro, Craighead County this weekend and will put flowers on the graves of James Cary; and Martha Bennett Cary; and others. Sam Cary is buried at Bolivar Cemetery which is about 20 miles from Jonesboro.

Write me back as soon as you can. Thanks again

Ruby Wood Coble

To Mr. Thompkins---In looking over some of my genealogical info, I found several photos of Cary gravestones in the Centerville Cemetery . Marietta Cary is one of them. She was born on May 30, 1886 and died on July 29,1959, according to her headsone. There are a few others, Augusta being one of them. I will email them to you since you are interested in that branch of the family.

Thank you so much. My interest largely in the Cary folk in St. Mary Parish. Knew Miss Marietta Cary--lived with aunt(?), Lillian Doran. Grandfather was Samuel Cary; only son and M.'s father was Washington Cary?--married Betty Bedell?--parents of Sam and Marietta? Was there also a daughter, Augusta? Samuel (1816-1903)---rather old for cavalry. Wife was Elinora? And am very curious about Richard C. Cary; also how J. D. Bedell comes in. Will explain my interest in detail when there is more space.
John Cary (Rensselaer and Columbia Counties, NY)

My great-great-great grandfather, Joshua Cary was born 1808 in Albany County, NY and lived all his adult life in Otsego County, NY. His father was John Cary who was born in New York possibly between the years 1765-1790.

I have searched many different families and tried to get a connection to any John Cary's. I haven't found any information on a John Cary in Albany or Otsego County; therefore, I've decided to look into the counties surrounding Otsego and Albany Counties and the census' between 1800-1830. The last census I have with Joshua in it is 1840 and his first child was born in 1831. So in 1830 and before that he must have been with his parents or a family member.

I've found a John Cary in the 1810 census of Hillsdale, Columbia, NY with one son and a daughter. The son is in the right age group to be my Joshua Cary. Then in 1820 I found another John Cary in Pettersburg, Rensselaer, NY with 2 sons and one daughter. One son being in the right age group to be my Joshua Cary. I guess John could have moved in the 10 years. I would like to know if this is the same John Cary in both census' and if anyone has any more information about him and his family. Or any suggestions where I can find more information that may lead me to know if he's the John I'm looking for or if I can cross him off my list too. I don't know where he is in 1830 or where he was in 1800. Any help would be great.

Thanks
Paula Cary

To TomkinsJm---I have checked with my records and thought you might like to have the following. You may already have this-- However here it is----the original Cary of my ancestry to come from England was Samuel Cary who fell in love with his cousin Margaret ---unable to marry in England, they came to US. They had a son, Richard Simon/Seaman Cary, who married Judith Bird/Baird/Beard. This union produced nine children according to my records. They are (not in birth order as far as I know), but here they are; Thomas S., Alvin/Abraham, Elizabeth, Catherine, Richard C.M., Anthony Bird (my ancestor),Joshua B., Samuel and William Slanderwick. I have dates of birth and death for some of these, but this posting is a bit long, so if you are interested , I can post them later for you.

Thanks---you have a lot of information regarding the Cary Family. Samuel was one of the brothers who migrated from New York as you know. Joshua was another one of those siblings. In Centerville LA, there is the Joshua Cary home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Homes---it seems that Joshua and at least some of his brothers were engaged in the lumber business here in Louisiana. There is a branch of Carys in the Jennings .LA area who are descended from Joshua.
Always interested in hearing from someone with Cary connections!
Samuel Cary, pvt in Co. C, 2nd LA Cavalry. POW paroled May 26, 1865. I knew a Miss Marietta Cary in Franklin many years ago, granddaughter of Elinora Cary and I presume Samuel Cary and daughter of Washington Cary whose wife was Betty Bedell. Marietta had a brother, Sam, who died young, leaving no heirs. There was, I believe, an Augusta Cary, perhaps the sister of Washington Cary.

There was a Joshua Cary...not sure where or if he fits in.

Although I do not have my records at hand, I can tell you that these people are my ancestors---another brother, Anthony Bird Cary also migrated to Louisiana, and became my great, great grandfather. I have in the records that a Samuel Cary was captured in the Civil War, having fought in the Battle of Port Hudson, near Baton Rouge, LA. he evidently survived and lived to a ripe old age! As I get into my records, I will be able to provide more information. Hope this helps a little for now---
Elsie Cary Prejean

There is record of Samuel Cary, born Staten Island, NY on April 13, 1816 and who died in St. Mary Parish, LA on October 20, 1903. Also a RICHARD C. CARY, born Staten Island, NY, on June 10, 1835 and who died in St. Mary Parish, LA on July 22, 1885. I would be interested in any further information on these two men that is known by anyone out there...

Jerry Tompkins

GREAT and thank you. Glad to clear that up. From memory, in that old photo, the second or third son from the left was William Henry Cary. He married Mary Splawn and their grandaughter, as you already know, was my great grandmother, C.Ann Cary, born in Oregon Territory at Holley, Oregon 1857 and who died at Salem, Oregon, from memory that was 1941. I have movie film of her holding my cousin on her first birthday and first Christmas in Alameda CA, and might have her on movie film walking the Golden Gate bridge on opening day about March or April 1936 or 37, whatever it was...Thank you.

Oh, and ummm, so use that name in your tree if you wish to, based upon one date in a marriage record book that is a transcribed version nobody has seen. No biggie, but suggesting that since the marriage occurred before the Civil War and so many records and court houses were burned it could be something which you should seriously reconsider as validity-based evidence typically points to the factual truth over the rest of another 40 or 50 years of records... There are a great many errors in these compilation(s) of old marriage or whatver records, we all know. Its a futile argument so just use what you wish.
The BLM-GLO has Armenius Cary on the land claim and land patent signed by the US President in Oregon. I appreciate your sharing the old family photo which includes my great grandmother's father as one of the several sons of Armenius Cary, and MCVETKO had the same photo, whoever he is. The book by Mrs. Archie Toal called "the Cary Families of Virginia" which this woman out of Stockton, CA put together about 1965 included family data contributed by relatives including my grandfather, on typewritten sheets of paper. That 'book' was like a child's term paper, typed, but reproduced on a xerox machine. The Cary family photo appeared in it, but was very poor quality. I only have about ten to twelve pages of what I think is actually a 65 page or so booklet which was spiral bound and 3-hole punched.
In my opinion, The preponderance of evidence of the validity of first name of Armenius goes to Armenius Cary in the following records: several US census records in Missouri and Oregon Territory and Oregon; the old Cary family bible entry viewed and transcribed by Deanna Campbell; which was subject of a post on the message boards by she and I about ten years ago; death record entry; and a report of tombstone entry (but I did not yet view the tombstone, personally). Plenty of Cary members lived in Oregon to report on Armenius Cary as his name, the original land claim surveyor maps, surveyor's notes and notebooks included. Believe what you wish at this stage, all the records except one marriage transcription that nobody has seen seem to overrule the Ambrose name as pure error in my opinion.

Dave, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, Ambrose Cary and Armenius Cary are the same person. The only place "Ambrose" shows up is in Marriage Book A of Lafayette County, Missouri. I am certain that Ambrose and Armenius are identical because the date in the Lafayette County marriage book is the same as Armenius gave in his Donation Land claim. The Carys are documented in Lafayette County by land records at the proper time. I got the Lafayette County date from a transcription of the marriage book made by Nadine Hodges and Mrs. Howard Woodruff in their series on Missouri pioneers (exact cite not right at hand, sorry; I will post it when I come across it). I suspect that the photo referred to by mcvetko is probably the same one that I sent you in 2007.

The Cary family is in Volume III.

Thanks for confirming that the son of Benjamin and Thankful, John Cary, never moved to NY. Therefore, his son John would have been born in RI and not NY and I can check him off from being the John I'm looking for and keep looking. And, his grandson would be too young to be the John I'm looking for. Another one to check off.

I can also check off Taylor's grandson from being the John I'm looking for because he'd be too young as well.

I need to find more information on Nathaniel's son John, though.Hopefully the book you mention and I've seen other people have been using and suggest this book too will have some answers. I plan on stopping at a library to see if I can find this book; however I do live in WI so not sure if it would be available to me here. I'll check it out though.

I have searched the census' for John Cary between 1790-1830 in the counties of Albany, Otsego, and Oneida. Three of the counties that I know would be included in my family history and nothing has been too helpful. Especially since I don't know if my 3rd great grandfather, Joshua had any siblings. I've also added in Dutchess County, since I've found people in the census' who have family from there. I have found a lot more John Cary's listed in the state of PA during this era as well. Not sure if that's any helpful to me, either.

But Thank You to everyone who have been posting. Has been very helpful and I do appreciate it. If anyone finds more info, please let me know. Thanks!

Paula

Re: John Cary (son of Benjamin and Thankful)

John Cary, son of Benjamin and Thankful did not move to Beekman with others of his family. He lived his entire life in Providence Co., RI and died there quite old ca1824. His obituary reads, “A few days since, Mr. John Cary, aged 89 years. A musket ball which was lodged in his neck, near the left shoulder, in an action with a French ship in the war of 1756, remained there when he was placed in his coffin. He had been for several years under the care of the Overseer of the Poor. His wife, of the same age, still survives him.”

Of course there are other descendants of Benjamin with the given name of John. The above John had a son John Cary who died in 1826 on a voyage to Havana Cuba. This John also had a grandson John born in Cranston, RI in 1804.

Benjamin's son Ebenezar had a grandson, John born to Taylor Cary somewhere in NY state.

Benjamin's son Nathaniel had a son John born to him in Dutchess County, NY

So John is a pretty common name in the family.

I suggest that you consult "The Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York: An Historical and Genealogical Study of All the 18th Century Settlers in the Patent." Volume #3 has a chapter on the Cary family in Dutchess County. Have you looked for John Carys in the Federal census returns for NY state?

Thanks Lynn,

The reason I want to track this family is that i noticed one of Benjamin's sons (Joseph) died in Otsego County, NY and one of Joseph's sons (Samuel) lived in Albany County, NY. My 3rd great grandfather, Joshua Cary, was born in Albany County and lived his adult life in Otsego County. All I know about his father is his name was John Cary and he was born in NY.Since some of Benjamin's family end up in the location where I can find my Joshua. I'm trying to learn as much I can about the John's in Benjamin's family. Maybe John followed relatives to these places and that's how we ended up in Otsego County, NY.

If you do learn anything more about any of these John's of Benjamin's family, please let me know. Thanks much!

Paula,

Benjamin and Thankful Cary moved to Dutchess Co. NY about 1764-65 as 1 Dec 1764 Benjamin Cary Sr. bought land in Dutchess County, NY (Dutchess Co. NY Mortgages, liber 2:42). Reference is also made in documents of this time period to land now in possession of Benjamin Carey. ("The Settlers of the Beekman Patent", Vol. III, The Cary Family, by Frank J. Doherty).

"He lived to a good age and perhaps spent his last years in Pawling. The 'Poughkeepsie Journal' of Saturday , 3 July 1790, carried a notice, "Mrs. Thankful Cary, wife of Benjamin Cary died in Pawling Friday last, aged 75'" The
notice was dated 20 June 1790." ("The Settlers of the Beekman Patent", Vol. III, The Cary Family, by Frank J. Doherty p. 282.)

Their son John may have moved with them to Dutchess Co. as in the May Dutchess Co. NY Court of of Common Pleas in 1775, Daniel Parse gave a Promissory Note to a John Cary. I do know that another of their sons, Nathaniel did move to Dutchess Co. by 1775. Nathaniel Cary served in the Dutchess Co. Militia, 3rd Regiment in 1776 (New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, p.241) and there is also a John Cary listed so this could well be his brother. Nathaniel, sometimes called Nathan, is my ancestor so I know a lot about him but I've not followed John.

Hope this helps
Lynn Brandvold

I would like more information on John Cary (son of Benjamin and Thankful). Where'd he live? Did he get married? Children?

I noticed his brother Joseph died in Otsego County, NY. My great-great-great grandfather, Joshua Cary, lived his adult life and died in Otsego County, NY. I was wondering if maybe Joseph's brother John or a nephew, also called John (Joshua's father's name was John and he was also born in NY; Joshua was born in Albany County, NY July 18,1808), followed him there and that's how we came to Otsego County, NY.

I thought I'd follow up on this John and see if there is a possibility. Any information would be wonderful.

Also, John and Joseph had a brother named Nathaniel Cary. He died in Dutchess County, NY and it seems his children may have also been born in Dutchess County, NY. One being a John Cary. If anyone has more information on this John Cary too, please let me know.

Paula Cary

Hi, you mentioned that you have a photo of Armenius Cary and the family. You mention in your effort an Ambrose Cary, too. I would like to see adn identify the Cary members in the photo if you can share it with me, please, and your information. I don't recognize the name of Ambrose Cary, yet so am interested in that as well. I would like to know more about your link(s) to the Cary (and Carey) members of Oregon from about 1851 to 1915 or so.
Please share what you have for photos and information. Thank you, Dave

I am a direct descendant of John Wesley Cary/Carey. My name is Susan Carry Peterson and the name of my family tree is the Carry Cobern family tree. I don't know if you need information, you can look at my tree and there is also a great website http://careyroots.com/careyenglish.html that will take you back to 1170 AD in the Cary/Carey line. This line has been heavily researched and there are many records of our european ancestors as many were noblemen. Happpy researching!
Susan

Cary families or Cary Family of Virginia

I am working on my surnamed Cary ancestors. My great
grandmother as born in Oregon Territory 1857. Her father was William Henry Cary son of Armenius Cary (b. Virginia) and his wife, Anna James.
A written history of the Cary families of Virginia, by that exacttitle, was compiled in the 1960's by Mrs. Archie Toal who, lived in Stockton, California at that time.
At some point and as additional evidence for me, about 1980, a Cary family bible was discovered FYI one of the elder sons of Armenius Cary spelled his name as Miles
Carey as well as Cary, it seems. I have nearly all of these pioneer families outlined, matching up in records and also matching the info on the bible family pages, too.
I am STILL LOOKING FOR A COPY OF the compiled BOOK (about 45 to 55
pages) entitled " The Cary Families of Virginia " by
Mrs. Archie Toal. The effort was produced by photocopier and bound with three hole punch, heavy stock end papers, and foldover brass pins as was typical of the 1960's for such efforts.
I would like a copy, scanned if possible, or even a photocopy. The
Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley was said to have a copy but it has
been unable to locate their copy, I was told.
Any help, please ??? Dave

Hello Cousin--
My great, great grandfather is Anthony Bird Cary, so it is a pleasure to hear from another member of the Staten Island Cary family.
According to my information, Anthony Bird Cary is the grandson of Samuel Cary and his wife Margaret, since he is the son of Richard Seaman/Simon Cary and his wife Judith Bird/Baird/Bard. This couple (Richard and Judith) had nine children:Thomas S., Alvin B. (or Abraham), Elizabeth, Catherine, Richard C.M., Anthony Bird/Baird/Bard/Beard, Joshua B., Samuel, and William Slanderwick.
Four of these children migrated to Louisiana; Samuel, William Slanderwick, Joshua and Anthony B.
Our ancestor Anthony B. married Adelaide Steele and had two sons; Samuel Budd Cary and Zachary Taylor Cary. Samuel died as a child, and Adelaide either died or became incapacitated, thus Zachary T. was raised by his maternal grandparents, the Steeles. Zachary became my great grandfather.
This is getting lengthy--I would love to hear from you to share further information. May ask if you are in Louisiana or have Louisiana connections? Perhaps we could get together via email.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Elsie Cary Prejean

Re: Samuel CARY of London, father of Richard Seaman CARY?

A second source to this was passed on from William Stanton Cary (son of William Standerwick Cary and Grandson of Richard Seaman Cary). William Stanton Cary passed the story on to his Grandson Thaddeus Ray Cary, Jr. This is the written account from Thaddeus.

"Thomas and Joyce Cary lived in West London in 1740. They had a son Samuel and a brother named Joseph. Samuel was baptized Dec. 13, 1740. Samuel fell in love with his first cousin Margaret and they were not permitted to marry by English law. So they ran away, married, and moved to New York. Samuel was a surgeon in the British Navy. A son was born in 1768 on Staten Island to Samuel and Margaret named Richard.

Samuel went back to England to try to settle his family estate but died en route aboard the “Royal Britton". His wife and son received an allowance from the estate until the outbreak of the war between United States and England when it stopped. Margaret was advised to go to Virginia to see some of Samuel’s relatives and see if something could not be done with the estate. She sailed, leaving Richard [with] friends. The ship was wrecked and after a period of time on a raft Margaret died. She left a Bible with instructions written on the fly leaf telling what she wanted for her son. The Bible was rescued with the other passengers after her death and burial at sea. Richard was raised by the couple and his allowance resumed from England. Grandpa Cary said he read the writing on the fly leaf of that Bible as a child and thought it was in the family of his Uncle Samuel."

** Note: Uncle Samuel was one the the sons of Richard Cary that came to Louisiana with brothers Williams Standerwick, Anthony Bird Cary and Joshua B. Cary.

The listing in Staten Island and its people - a history 1609 - 1929 (Page 874)was found later and helped confirm the above story.
