My great grandfather, Patrick Cashell, from New York City fought in the Civil War also - He was in the Army from March to June of 1862 (his unit was dissolved) and then joined the Navy from Sept. 1862 to Sept. 1863. I don't think it is the same Patrick, but there was 1 other Patrick in the 1870 Federal census. Mark Humphreys says we are all related. If you want to correspond, just e-mail me at mgaray@hvc.rr.com
Mary Anne Garay

Michael Cashel/Cashell, pensioner in Tullamore, Offaly, 1846

My ggggrandfather enlisted in the British Army in 1798 and was pensioned out in 1812. The next record I have of him is in 1846 when I learn he collects his pension from the district of Tullamore. I am wondering if he had family in this area. I also know that his name was originially spelled as Cashell, but in later records, his name was spelled as Cashin. I would think the first name he gave might have been correct and that somewhere along the way there was an incorrect transcription, but I don't know. His daughter Eliza, born somewhere in Ireland, would have been born c1820. Eventually, she emigrated to Stockport, England, and married there. She had lived there for at least 10 years when her father came to live with her family. If anyone has Cashells, or any variation of that name, living in Offaly, I would be interested in hearing from you.

I was recently able to contact "my" Thomas Cashel in NH. He said a cousin had done some Cashel genealogy, but that he himself was not very interested in genealogy. He gave me a few names of his decendants, but nothing about his ancestors so I'm afraid I can't help you. (where in the US did they settle?) My maiden name was Blattmachr so that is the information I had been looking for.

ps-We are also going to Ireland, but to the Dublin area, to research my mother's Pentony & Brenan/Brennan families.

I have a website on Cashel / Cashell, focusing mainly on Ireland, and mainly on Co.Kerry and Co.Tipperary, but including lots of other places. Please have a look and send any additions or corrections:
http://computing.dcu.ie/~humphrys/FamTree/Cashel/contents.ht...
http://computing.dcu.ie/~humphrys/FamTree/Cashel/
http://computing.dcu.ie/~humphrys/FamTree/Cashel/misc.html
The main Cashel(l) family of Co.Kerry descend from Anglo-Irish gentry and ultimately from nobility and royalty, as you can see at the above site, so this is pretty much the most interesting surname in my family tree.
Hi Peter

I have hit a brick wall! I am searching for any connection to a Euphemia (Dolly) Govers - married in 1892 to Francis W Peisley in Nyngan.

I am searching for Dolly's parents, and was informed by Dolly's granddaughter that Dolly had a half family - the Cashells. In particular, Dolly was known to have 2 half sisters by the names of Blanche and "Ettie". It may be a long shot, but I'm wondering if "Ettie" could be Lauretta!

If any of this rings a bell with you I would be most grateful to discover more! In particular I would like to learn more about Dolly's parents (and presumably step-father with the surname Cashell).

Regards
Kylie

I have been in contact with a Mark and Richard who have given me info--this is what they gave me: Patrick Cashel had son Thomas Cashel. Thomas has sons--Raymond, Tom, Al, Leo and daughter Ilene --no mention of a Helen though--?. Raymond is my x-husband -Brian's father. They are from Trenton NJ area. Brian has two brothers--Michael Patricdk. Brian I have four children--Justin, Joshua, Joel Jillyn.
Possibly connected?
Mary F.
E-mail: Mary1157@hotmail.com

Hi Richard...
Thanks for the info! Hopefully it's the same family -- sounds like it could be, since Trenton is where Brian (my x) was born.
How much do you know about Ray? Brian's mothers name is Jane Bashore. Do you know if this sounds familiar? I just talked to Brian, he's a little skeptical that I found the right family..I guess he would be after 40 years of not knowing of any blood family. As a stated to Mark, Brian knows and sees his one brother Michael(a year older than Brian) but doesn't know his oldest brother Patrick. Last we knew, Patrick lived in Trenton (with his mother)then went into the military. Do you know of any Patrick Cashels in Trenton--approx 45 years old?
Do you presently live in Trenton? We lived in Sussex County NJ up until 3 years ago, then moved to NC. Mike (Brians brother) lives in PA. Mike married a woman with three children, but never had any of his own. Brian has three sons - Justin, Joshua, Joel and one daughter Jillyn (Ages 21 to 16). We divorced in 1988, i have re-married, but we still are in close contact. Actually, I and my husband were making the move to NC and Brian moved down near us--especially since his kids and only famiy he knew of was going. Do you have any pictures of Cashel's--Brians uncles, grandfather, father, cousins--I can send you pics if you would like.
You can contact me directly at my e-mail : Mary1157@hotmail.com--it's easier than going through family history.
Thanks again for the info--anything else you can tell us would be greatly appreciated.
Any info I may help you (Brian kids and brother Mike), I'd be happy to share.

TX again--Mary

My great-great grandfather, Patrick Cashel emigrated to New York City with his wife, Rose and 2 sons, Patrick and Thomas. As far as I know, they lived in New York City (especially, my great grandfather, Patrick). I got this information from the 1860 NYC census. There is a Thomas Cashel (maybe my great uncle??) who settled in New Jersey. A Barbara Savage has been on the net asking questions about this family. I have e-mailed her, but she has not answered. Patrick Cashel, my great grandfather, according to the U.S. Navy (which he served during the Civil War) came from County Longford. His wife, Catherine I do not know much about. I will be going down to NYC Vital Statistics in a few weeks to see if I can find their Marriage Certificate and Death Certificates. That might open up some new information. I'll keep in touch.

My great-uncle's name was Thomas Cashell, he was married to a Helina in the 1880's. He had a son Thomas, who could be the husband of Vera. Thomas' father was Patrick Cashel and his mother was Rose Beglin from County Longford, Ireland. I am going over to Ireland in early November and will stop by Longford to see if I can go any further back on their ancestry. They emigrated from Ireland during the "Great Hunger" also known as the "Famine" but there was plenty of food in Ireland, but the common people were not allowed to have any. That is another story. If you think we are related, please contact me.

Yes, Thomas & Helina were my great uncle and aunt. It is very possible that the daughter born in 1880 was named Mary as Thomas' mother's mother (grandmother) was Mary Coleman. My great grandfather, Patrick is also on the 1880 census as is his mother, Roseanne Cashell who lived with her daughter, Mary Harvey and Mary's son John. Where are your Cashell's from?
After we get back from Ireland, we will be going down to Vital Statistics on Chamber's Street, NYC to get more information on the Cashells and also the Kilkeary's whom my grandmother, Gertrude married.

My Great-Great-Grandfather was one Henry G. Cashel who may have had an Uncle (not likely his father) or possibly a brother who departed for Australia around 1815. Possibly after fighting a duel. If so he was not listed on convict ship manifests as far I can find out.

Henry may have had a son Douglas as well Benjamin Harding Cashel, my GGF. Benjamin's mother was Christiana Cashel (nee Harding) Henry may have died shortly after 1866, likely at around age 66. Christiana died on January 17, 1885 in London, England age 82.

I have a few more names, so if you are still interested please e-mail me.
Cashel/Cashell

The story behind the different spellings of this last name is a feud between 2 brothers. They hated each other so much that one added another L onto the end of his name so no one would know they were related. From what I can understand from my family tree all Cashel's and Cashell's are related. there is also another form of our name made by mistake during immigration. The new spelling is Kashell. This is a spelling error made by the person who took the info at immigration services.
