I am trying to find out about his father, William J. Cashman. I am at a standstill. I'm thinking William's mother was a Hannah McGrah (sp?) and I think his father was John Cashman. John was form Co Cork Ireland. My Grandmother was Anna Cecelia Cashman married to Wayne Moses Colby - my maiden name is Colby. They came to New Hampshire or vacinity but I have lots more searching to get dates and such. My Grandmother Anna Cecile (Cashman) Colby had a full brother younger then she and three older half-brothers and sister. Have yet to get all their information but do know Michael Francis Cashman did live in Rhode Island as an adult. I believe the three older ones were Joanna Cashman, Robert Cashman and John Andrew Cashman. I have a few dates but its quitelate now and I wanted to get this to you in the event our families might be connected. I will have to seek John's first wife's name but I do have it. Would love to hear from you and compare notes. Sandra (Colby) Bowman

I hope you still have those books! I just saw this post when I was trying to find out more about him. KV Cashman was my uncle. He lived in Portland for a while. I would very much like to have those books, especially since they were given to him by his father, my grandfather. I never got to know either. They died before I was born.

Please contact me at rhonda@afpdesign.com or call me at 208-841-5395.
My sister and I are trying to piece together the Cashman family tree and I spotted your entry. My grandmothers name on my mothers side is Mildred Cashman who was married to Luther Oseland in 1927 in either MN or WI. We are gaining quite an extensive list of Cashmans coming back through WI, MO, Canada and then Ireland. It's coming together pretty well so far but we are having trouble with finding the cities in Ireland.

The information I provided comes from an old copy of the Cashman Surname in America by Weaner - Shull. It was given to me over 40 years ago. Art Weaner was a 1st cousin 5th generation removed to me. Through him and his information I have been able to ascertain that there are three distinct lineages of the Cashman Surname. Irish, English and German; German because of the change of name in the late 1770's.

In actuality the name was changed from the German name of Kirschenmann to Cashman, enabling them to live in peace, because the British had used the Hessian's to fight the colonist. This was according to my Great Grand father who was the son of George Christian Cashman and Mary Elizabeth (Snyder) Cashman - Harry Grant Cashman (5th generation)

They were from New hampshire but I do believe Michael did move to Massachusetts as an adult. That is all the info I have so i too would appreciate any information. Anna was the daughter of John Cashman and Ellen Donahue. Anna and Michael had three older step-siblings. My Grandmother's parents came from Ireland so further research is harder to do.
Hi Ed, I have been looking for information on the Cashman's from PA for about 40 years. My grandmother was Anna Cleo Cashman. The Story begins with Margaret Ellen Self b. 1870 (There is a Self family Association). Margaret was the daughter of James Self and Margaret Craven. Margaret first Married James McEllrath in 1896. They had three children, Bertha, Clarence, and Dewey. Bertha ended up in an orphanage, I don't know why. Clarence and Dewey continued living with Margaret after their father died. Margaret married a second time to Henry Shoup Cashman, brother of Elmer Cashman. Henry was born 1871 and Elmer was born 1878 in Altoona, Blair County, PA I have more information that I can post if you want. Rita

I am hoping that there is a connection between your CASHMANs and CULLINANEs and mine. In my case, the husband is a CULLINANE and the wife's mother was a CASHMAN. They married in New Zealand but I do not know whether they knew each other back in County Cork. Details are as follows:

Ellen BARRY (parents John BARRY and Ellen CASHMAN) married John CULLINANE (parents Timothy CULLINANE and Mary KEOHANE) on 21st August 1870, in Hokitika, New Zealand.

- John CULLINANE's parents were farmers from the townland of Caherbeg/Cahirbeg (and other spellings!), in the Schull/Goleen area of County Cork, Ireland.

- Ellen BARRY was born in Queenstown, County Cork (I understand that Queenstown is the Cobh).

(Tried contacting you directly but your email did not appear to be current).

Grateful for the details you have. Looking forward to your reply.

We know she is buried at Moore Cemetery in Nevada, MO (Vernon County). She was born to Vinita Jean Pitts and I only know the father's last name is Cashman. We have been unable to find any birth or death records for her. Thanks.

Cashman seems to be a somewhat elusive name. My Grandmother's maiden name was Cashman (Anna Cecelia Cashman) and she was married to Wayne Moses Colby, and her parents were John Cashman and Ellen Donahue Whose parents were Timothy Cashman married to a Mary Murphy and John Donahue married to a Nora Murphy. I do have Timothy Cashman's parents names as Michael Cashman married to Austis Burns but no dates etc. I know my Grandmother goes directly to Ireland but some of the family came back 'n forth from Ireland to the USA. Gets very confusing as my Great Grandfather was married twice - both wives from Ireland and related to one another I believe, and she has half-sisters and brothers and a brother Michael but no info on them. They mostly lived in New Hampshire and were from Counties Cork and Killeen in Ireland. I'd love to find some connections also.
We are related to a James Cashman who emigrated from Ireland in 1848. Eugene is another family name so it is possible that we are related. Did your family live in NYC at any time? James Cashman fought in the Civil War in the Irish brigade. He had three sons Michael, John and Thomas and a daughter Mary. They were all born between 1850-1865

Name origin

Hi guys,
I am pondering on the name Cashman and have a theory based on an American Cashman's research. He found that his Cashman was actually derived from Germany in the early 1700's, 1709 to be precise when a religious group was exiled from Germany and sought refuge through the Queen of England who settled them in Ireland and America in the hope of countering the Catholic strength. She Anglicized their family names and as this American found, his Cashman was actually Kirshenmann (cherry man) which could explain the derived Kissane then Cashman. There is a name for this religious group but I'd have to look back into my notes to find it and right now I do not have the time. Could explain their family tradition in the brewery trade!
