Hi Teri
I am descended from Frank Casner's sister, Mary Ivan Casner Shipp. Mary was the first daughter born to Lewis and Rebecca Clementine "Clemmie" Crabb Casner, born about 1890 probably in Texas. Lewis and Clemmie were the parents of 10 children. Lewis was the son of John Casner and Mary Freel Casner, who immigrated over the Oregon Trail in 1852. Mary died of either cholera or childbirth (possibly both) leaving John, Lewis and a newborn son, George. George was raised by his pateranl grandmother, but John kept Lewis with him and later moved from Washington Territory to California where he made a great deal of money in the gold strike. John and Lewis Casner bought a sheep herd with some of their money and moved them between the Panhandle of Texas and Arizona. They were also involved in several murders when their money was stolen. Lewis and Clemmie Casner were the first white couple married in the Panhandle of Texas on July 4, 1881 (I have a copy of their marriage license, written in longhand by the drugstore clerk that married them) I have much more, but also know the person who can help you more than me. Contact me and I'll give you her e-mail. Best of luck!
Deborah Barnard
Silverdale, WA

I would be very much indepbted to you for any information that you might have on the Casner Family. Bert married my Great Aunt, Myrtle Gawthrop and they had three children; stilborns, and two that died in their teens and twenties. When Uncle Bert died, I did not know of any of his sisters and brothers and do not know of any present day decsendants of Berts father. I have some things that I would like to get back into the Casner line but have no leads.
Hello Leif, I'm not sure if I replied to your message or someone else's but I'll repeat my reply. I have been trying to find info on Francis Marion Casner for a year. No one has pictures of him so far. Susan Ferris has a web site on the Casner, Littlepage, Puttmum, ect. with some family pictures. She knows Em. I have talked to Em in the past. How do know about his early work and where abouts ?
Thank you for this information. I had found the Calvin Lester Census in Texas and put two and two together. I'm not a blood Casner but my sons are. I am a San Diego native and had been to Julian, Warner Ranch, and spent summers camping thru-out the San Jacinto and Palomar mountains so this history is very exciting to me to. I looked up Cahuilla on google maps and have driven thru there in the past.
I found a 1902 news paper article thru this website about daughter Frances Marion Casner-Kirkpatrick's wedding in Riverside CA. It mentioned her brother Ed attending and her father leaving a stack of gold coins as a gift in the center of the gifts table. I didn't save the article thinking I would go back to it and even though I have searched for the article endlessly I can not find it again. I will be in Riverside June 6 and try to take a picture of F M Casner's grave. Thought Mary Ann had died prior 1880. Did F M remarry. ? Didn't find another Casner listed on the Greenwood Cemetery website. ~ Jane
My e-mail is janekirchner@hotmail.com
A picture of the new generation

Hello Nancy, this is Jane. I think I found F A M or Frank Casner b:1872 in Arizona. Son of Francis Marion Casner b:1842. All tree members on that side have no mother and father for him. 1930 census says he's born in CA at the right age, parents born Texas and Louisiana. I have connected to their trees and they may now have roots for him.

Son of Francis Marion Casner 1842. Arizona census says he is from CA born 1872. Parents Texas And Louisiana. Check my tree.

Fantastic! Leif, My two sons great, great, great, grandfather is Francis. Francis had a daughter he named after himself but spelled Frances and a son Ezra. That was a puzzling because Esra's name changed to Edward Rutherford Casner. Frances his sister was a teacher in Riverside. I played all day yesterday at this trying to poke out new info. for Francis. 1842 Knew about post office and Evergreen Cemetery but not much more.
My husband is just telling me maybe the Cahuilla post office was the dance place we went to in the 90's near Warner Springs off 79 south east of Temecula. We live in Temecula. There's a Chauilla Rd. and the place was once a post office. Thanks for the new information. Edward R. became a big shot in Fresno. Four drugstores at one time. Many adds and articles about him and his family over the years in the Fresno Bee. Made a lot of money selling snake oil. False claims in a hundreds of adds and very funny stuff.
Do you know how Francis M. Died
My mother in law (Helen Casner) said E. R. Casner Sr. her father-in-law was drunk in bed and lite himself on fire with from a cigarette. And that had happened before. Maybe his father Francis. She said in a cabin ? But since Francis died at 70 something that didn't happen to him. Check out the adds in my media. E.R. Casner had a side business. A pack horse train to Yosemite. I remember Mother-in-law mentioning this in the 80's and found that I heard right this last year. Any pictures ? Pryor Ancestry Chris (my son) lacked family history. Now they have oodles. Would love more info if you have it ~ Jane

Hello Doug, You will find the most info. if you google Martin Casner or Jacob Casner. Click on Thomas Jeffersons coming to California. Great read. Most family members noted. Em very friendly woman.
Santa Paula CA is where a T J Casner and Texanna raised their kids along with Francis Marion (his brother) and his kids. One was great-great-grandfather of my kids, Ezra or Edward Rutherford Casner.
Thomas married Texanna when she was 15 in Julian CA. A gold rush town. Texanna Lester is the daughter of Mary Ann Smith Lester, Calvin Lester was first husband and maybe died in war ? Then she married Francis prior coming to CA. There are to Francis Marion Casner's, father and daughter. Much to discover. See if this works Em - brandy.s@att.net PS. on the marriage page Terry Edward Casner was my kids dad. Now deceased. ~Jane

Hi,
It's good to hear from you. Thomas Jefferson Casner was my great-grandfather. My grandfather was Asa C. Casner, my father Thomas Asa Casner. I'm sorry but I had never heard of Francis M. Casner until your message, so I can't help you there. Also, unfortunately, my side of the Casner family was never very close. I knew my father's sister, Clara, and his two half-brothers, Ralph and Raymond, and, of course, my grandmother Margaret.

My dad used to tell me stories of his experiences with his grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Casner. One of his stories relates how he accompanied T.J. Casner down the main street of some town, the name of which I don't know. But T.J. wore six-guns on both hips. Dad never explained to me why his grandfather felt the need for such firepower, but the story was intriguing all the same.

I do remember Dad telling me how T.J. moved to Selma, CA., from Southern California to be close to family, where he raised watermelons, among other crops. Apparently he would load up a horse drawn wagon with watermelons and bring it to downtown Selma where he would park it out front of Asa C. Casner's (my grandfather) meat market. When T.J. left Selma for Southern California I don't know.

Good luck in your quest for information,
Doug Casner

p.s.: How can I get in touch with Em?

Hello. My name is Leif Casner William Landberg. I'm related to Thomas Jefferson Casner, who was my great-great-grandfather. I'm also a cousin of Em (Casner) Wendel, who is a great source of information about the Casner line descending from Jacob Casner-Isaac Casner-Martin Casner and descendants (including Martin Vanburin Casner, Francis Marion Casner, Thomas Jefferson Casner and other siblings).

My interest in Francis Marion Casner stems from my research on the 1868 Casner-Putman-Littlepage party's trip west from Blanco County, Texas, to San Diego County. I've been trying to do a wider reconstruction of their trip west by providing a broader historical context for Thomas J. Casner's account of his wagon train experiences.

I know that Thomas J. Casner and Francis M. Casner moved up to Ventura County in 1872, but that later Francis M. Casner moved back to Ballena in San Diego County in the late 1880s. At that time, or slightly later, he became involved in mining operations in the San Jacinto Mountains hauling ore and making road improvements for an asbestos mine. He also was Postmaster at a "Cahuilla" post office until the area became part of the new county of Riverside. At sometime in the late 1880s or early 1890s he moved to Riverside. After that I don't have much information on him except that he died in Santa Paula, California but was buried in Riverside, where his wife died and was buried several years earlier. I know virtually nothing about his descendants, and I would like to know about them as well as what else you might know about Francis Casner's life.

I am not at all clear about how Francis M. Casner came to California, but piecing together genealogical information posted by Em Wendel I believe that Francis married in Texas a widow (or divorcee?) about 1865. His step-daughter was Texana Lester, who later married Thomas Jefferson Casner in Julian, California in 1870. That is to say, that Francis Casner's wife, was Thomas J. Casner's sister-in-law and mother-in-law! Reading between the lines, I've think that Francis Casner came to California via that transcontinental railway shortly after its completion in 1869, about one year after the Casner-Putman-Littlepage party westered to California by wagon train in 1868.

I would like to hear from you, and by all means get in touch with Em.

Hello, Good to see new interest. I'm mom of Casner sons who didn't know their history until over a year ago. Such a surprise Julian and all. We live in Temecula not so far away. Love the wagon train account of Thomas J Casner. You have a missing piece. Martin Van Casner had a twin brother Francis Marion Casner born Oct 1842. Francis had a daughter named after himself, Frances Marion Casner 1874, also a son Ezra F ??? Casner. He was a real puzzle. Name change or correction Edward Rutherford Casner Great Grand Father of Chris and Nick, my to boys. He was a big shot in Fresno. Drugstore adds and news paper facts up the kazoo. Watch out for the 4:00 AM search sickness. I've been there. Jane

Steve:

Yes, Franklin was the son of Jethro and Elizabeth (Eliza) Casner. According to my information Franklin was born in 1851. I haven't done further research on him yet. Elizabeth (Porter) Casner died in April of either 1853 or 1858. The year of death on her gravestone is very difficult to read. I belive it is an eight, but it could be a three. Jethro did remarry to Margaret as shown in the 1860 census. Jethro and Elizabeth were my great-great grandparents. However I am stuck with them and can't get any earlier. I have reason to believe that Jethro's father was Jacob Casner who was an immigrant from England in either the late 1700s or early 1800, but I can't confirm that. If you have any information on Jethro's parents I would like to correspond with you. Am also willing to share any information I have on this line.

Herb

Herb,
In the 1860 census, Jethro Casner is listed as having a 9-year-old son named Franklin, but there is no mention of wife Eliza. Do you know if Franklin is their son? Or of a possible later marriage to a woman named Margaret? I'm trying to tie Jethro to a line of Casners who lived in Lancaster, PA.

Regards,
Steve Casner
Mrs. L. B. Casner Obit - 1905 Macon Co., IL

Decatur Daily Review, Decatur IL, 7 Nov 1905, pg. 11

Mrs. L. B. Casner died at 8 o'clock Monday night at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E. B. Chapman, at Casner, where she had been residing for some time. Her death was caused by cancer and was rather unexpected. She had been in poor health since last April, but had only been confined to her bed for about five weeks. At that time she had an operation performed and the cancer was removed and she appeared to be getting along very well, but she grew worse a few days ago.

She is survived by four children, Mrs. James Wikoff of Crowley, La., Mrs. John Dawson of Chicago, Mrs. E. B. Chapman of Casner, and John Casner of Decatur. All the children were present at her death except Mrs Dawson. She was home a short time ago, but as her mother appeared better she went back to Chicago. She returned to Casner Tuesday.

Mrs. Casner's maiden name was Mary Eleanor Flanigan. She was born in Montgomery county, Ind. and was married to L. B. Casner Sept. 22, 1853. Mr. and Mrs. Casner had a fine residence at the little town which bore their name. They moved to Decatur several years ago and built the handsome residence on West Main Street now owned and occupied by Dr. Will Barnes. At that time Mr. Casner was a stockholder in some of the banks of Decatur and had many other interests, at one time owning 2,000 acres of land in one piece. He died a few years ago. Mrs. Casner was well known and had many friends. The funeral will be held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Chapman. The interment will be at Long Creek cemetery.

Macon County Old Settlers Association obituaries
not related - Pam

Wanda - Thank you for making copies for me. I hope to make it up to Greene County, Indiana as I have found that several of my father-in-law's Corbin relatives are buried in Greene County. Our library has very limited information on Greene County so if any of your books have information on the James Corbin 1793-1785; George Washington Corbin 1838-1863; Daniel Boone Corbin 1857-1934 as well as Nancy Hatfield 1836-1902 daughter of Mordicia Ale Hatfield and Milly Richardson would be wonderful. It would give me a jump start for when I head up there this summer.

Wanda - I am just beginning to research my father-in-law's family. His g-grandfather was George Casner married to Catherine Spinks. Their daughter Nancy Ellen Casner married his grandfather - Daniel Boone Corbin. You had mentioned civil war papers... Would you consider sharing copies as well as any information on the Casner family past George? It would be most welcome. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I think that pretty well settles the question of why someone with a 37 marker match to my Casner DNA would be in MO. Since Thomas is not on my line and the person posting the DNA stopped at Thomas, do you have ancestors above Thomas who would be my link to that line?
