Lewis Cass Born in Exeter N.H.Oct 9,1782. Settled in Marietta ,O., 1799 Studied law and was admitted to the bar 1802. Entered the war of 1812 as Col. of the third Ohio Vols. Urged the invasion of canada; crossed the line and won the battle of Toronto.Prisoner of war on surrender of Detroit.Became Maj-Gen Ohio vols and Brig-Gen, USA Military governor of Michigan 1813-'31 Secretary of war under President Jackson. Appointed minister to France,1836,resigning 1842. Elected US senator 1845 nominated for president 1848. Secretary of state 1857-'60. Died June 17,1866.
