Alvin Benson Cassity did indeed head west, and there was also another Alvin Cassity who stayed in Kentucky. For information on the Texas Cassity's see this link http://www.ihopetospeed.com/ The researcher is here on ancestry.com as RoreyCathcart, and she is desperately working to find the Kentucky origins of Alvin Benson, but has found no documents that conclusively show who the wandering Alvin is descended from.

Hi Ray,
I think there were/are two Alvin Cassity's. Yours and mine sound like the two different ones. My Alvin was married to Mary Ellen Cassity and lived around Stepstone, near Owingsville. Their children were Jesse F., Venetta, John B., Martha (My great Grandmother), and Thomas.

My Alvin was born abt. Jul 1818 and died about March 1888. Hi wife died at Stepstone and so I don't believer they ever went West?

Johnny Souder
256-468-4233
So pleased to know that there are others who are researching CASSITYs in Kentucky. My gggrandfather, Alvin B. Cassity, was born in Owingsville, Bath, Kentucky on 20 Feb 1826. He enrolled in the Kentucky Volunteers at Louisville on 9th of June, 1846. He served in the Mexican War & was discharged in 1850. Then he appears on the 1850 Federal Census in Jackson county, Missouri. Then in 1851 he married Sarah Ann Cantrell at Westport, Jackson, Missouri. They started their family while living in Bates County, Missouri & were listed on the 1860 Federal Census there. By the latter part of the 1860s, Alvin & Sarah had moved their family to Collin County, Texas where he signed the Oath of Allegiance to the Union in 1867. Eventually, the Cassity family moved on to Hood County, Texas. I am especially interested in finding out who were Alvin Cassity's parents/family in Bath County. Sure would be glad to exchange information.

She is buried in the Powers Cemetery near Owningsville with many other Cassity's buried there as well!
I am willing to share...

I'm tracking an Edna ADAMS (July 15th 1918 - April 3rd 1987) who married, before 1964, someone called Cassity. In 1964 she apparently became a US citizen (had been born, Belfast, Ireland), and was living at Grenada Hills, LA, Cal.

Anyone with info - I'd be grateful.
Ciaran Crossey
cpcrossey at gmail.com

James Cassady, b. 1808, Randolph, NC, USA

This name is spelled so many ways depending on the census so thought I would cut and paste my post on the Cassady thread in case someone here has info that might help me.

I am looking for any information on James Cassady, b 1808 in Randolph County, NC - son of John and Elizabeth Cassady - both born in Ireland. James married Dicy Page and they had at least 5 children - John, Benjamin, Martha Jane, Calvin Jackson, and Loyd Alexander. The youngest, Loyd, was born around 1843. I am unable to locate James in the 1840 census. In the 1850 census his two youngest children (spelled Casady on this census) are in Washington County, LA with a man by the name of Israel Pierce. James' dad's (John) will dated 1848 states that James is at that time deceased the 5 children named are living in New Orleans. There is no mention of their mother Dicy or who they are living with.

Loyd Alexander is my ggg grandfather - he was killed in a river boat accident on the Arkansas River around 1870, when my gg grandfather was only 6 so info that has been passed down on the family is sketchy at best.

I am looking for any info on where James and Dicy were in 1840 and when and where they died. Also if anyone has any info on Israel Pierce and/or his wife Jane, that might prove to be useful as well.

Re: Alvin B Cassity, KY married Sarah A Cantrell in MO

Just returned from a trip to Owingsville & Frankfort, KY trying to track Alvin's family down as yet to no avail.

Alvin B. and his children are mostly well documented from 1850 forward. Particularly his time in Hood Co TX. The best case for the accuracy of his pre-1850 info is how well his post-1850 documentation matches up with his claims on his Mexican War pension.

Born 20 Feb 1826 in Owingsville, Bath Co Ky as you mentioned. Enlisted 13 May 1846 in Mt. Sterling Ky where he was a resident. He is not listed as a head of household in Mt Sterling or Owingsville as of the 1840 census though he would have been old enough. After his discharge from service, 9 June 1847 he returned to Bath Co until the spring of 1850.

To date I have found no evidence of Alvin B. in KY for the 1850 census. However, there is an Alvin Cassada, occupation carpenter, in Kaw township, Jackson Co, Missouri in 1850 which I believe to be our Alvin B. Others have suggested that the Sally Cantrell on the same census is Sarah but I have nothing to confirm or refute that theory.

The problem with the pre-1850 search is that the Cassity surname is very well represented in the area of Bath Co KY. Some researchers tend to co-opt or confuse information for Alvin Worth Cassity, son of John Cassity Jr. and his wife Margaret Richards for our Alvin B. In addition to the confusing number of Cassity's in the area, Morgan's Raiders and others contributed to the burning of some twenty court houses in the state of KY, including Owingsville and Mt. Sterling, during the Civil War making documentation difficult.

At this point my lines of attack are thus:
1) A Cassity Surname Study of KY. By this I hope to clearly define certain Cassity family groupings and thereby exlude them as possible Alvin B. parents. I am not looking foward to this possibility!
2) St. Louis, MO. We have the affidavit of the pastor who married Alvin and Sarah but I wonder what the licensing/bonding issues were at the time. I am hoping there are additional legal documents and possible newspaper notices out there to find which may indicate additional family info for Alvin B. or Sarah.
3) Hire a professional.

I'm not ready to give up yet but I am out of fresh ideas on this one short of the Surname Study/St. Louis angles so I am open to suggestions.

Sincerely,
Rorey Cathcart
www.ihopetospeed.com & 'CassCath Tree for Website' here on ancestry

Also, I am about to send in a DNA kit on this Cassity line.....hopefully, that will help with identifying relatives, especially those in Kentucky.

Elmer was illegitimate. His biological Father and wife adopted him. Actual surname on birth certificate and date of adoption is unknown. In 1945 an illegitimate daughter was born to Elmer and Bonnie Ruth Boyd. The daughter, my mother, did not meet her Father until around the age of 12. She was once introduced to a Behula Diskin who was related in some manner to Elmer. At Elmer's funeral in 1979, my mother met a Brice Cassity, brother of Elmer. Brice either worked on or owned an apple farm in Missouri. I've never met this side of my family and interested in at least learning about them. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks for replying Linda, your site is very helpful to anyone doing Cassidy research, Thanks. My line goes back to John Cassady in Washington County Tennessee. He married Martha Young, the daughter of Robert Young Sr., who migrated from Virginia. I believe this John was the son of Neal Casidy, but have no direct evidence, other than Robert Young Sr. living in the same area as Neal Casidy at he time of his death and John's his mariage to his daughter, Martha Young. The Youngs lived in the same area of Virginia (Rockbridge Co) as Neal Casity. One of Neal Casity's sons, John, was taken in by the neighbor of Robert Young Sr. at his death. I believe this John is the same as Married his daughter Martha and later moved to Tennessee with them. I have looked at information on your site and information (Legal) that is available from early Virginia court records, but have never found any documentation that would support this Neal - John connection.
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
don

Hello again. I am Ken's (Butch's) daughter, Kathy (Hutchison), now Sumner. This is wonderful. I am so glad to be in touch with you.

I currently live in Hawaii and was able to make one trip during Grandma's illness. I went to Aunt Sue's and spent a week with Grandma in June of the the same year she passed. When she passed I was not able to go to the funeral. My husband was deployed and I was in Hawaii with my girls, Chelcie and Cassity. It really hurt to miss it.

I have always felt close to the Cassity family line. Because I was always petite in stature. My sister convinced me I was adopted because my family towered over me. Grandma lived with us for a time, but when I went to Illinois as a child I met your father, Jo Bill and the other Cassity's. Finally, I realized where I came from. So for me, the Cassity line has always provided me with a definition of "self". Which brings me to another topic.

I have recently been in touch with your father, Jo Bill, Lela and Sal. I am trying to get Ione's address. I am a writer (of sorts). I am now working on my second book. It is about the Cassity family during the late 1920's through the 1930's. I intend to write about the family traveling together as children, from track to track with horeses in tow. So if you have any stories your father told you of his days traveling as a child with the family I would love to hear them.

Again, it's great to be in communication with you. I bet having James for a father was quite interesting. You must have spent many years at the track. What a childhood!

Take care and thanks for responding,
Kathy

Hi. By any chance is your father Jo Bill or Jimmy Cassity? I know Jimmy's son is Darrel but I'm not sure of the rest of the family. You said your father and his brother were jockeys and your great grandfather was Leonard Cassity, his father William Cassity. If so, I am a cousin. They lived in Oklahoma. Her husband was William Franklin Cassity. His parents were: James Albert Cassity and Mary McNabb. His parents were Stepen Cassity and Sarah Crouch. I have so much info, but don't have here with me right now. I get SO excited when I find a cousin!! So, email me and I'll give you all of what I have. The family was very much into horse-racing.
Don, that would depend on which Cassidy family you're refering to. In general, although all the Cassidys in VA would probably connect somewhere back in Ireland, I don't think anyone believes that all the Cassidys in early VA were closely related. But I do suspect that the ones who lived in the same vicinity... and/or migrated together... were probably related. Which line are you working on?

Linda Cassidy Lewis

In the Henry Wells article (which is the source of the idea that Garner was a descendant of Pocahontas) the proposed connection goes like this:
John Rolfe/Pocahontas------Thomas Rolfe/Jane Poythress------Jane Rolfe/Robert Boling--------John Bolling/Mary Kennon------Jane Boling/Col. Richard Randolph------John Randolph/Francis Bland--------John Randolph/female Peters------female Randolph/male Ashby-------Garner Ashby/John Cassity.

But it is documented that the John Randolph who married Francis Bland was born on 26 JUN 1742 in "Curles", Henrico County, VA and married Francis on 9 MAR 1769 in "Cawsons", Prince George County, VA. Their son John, who Wells claimed to be Garner's grandfather, was born on 2 JUN 1773. We don't have an exact birth date for Garner, but since we know that her first child was born 14 Jan 1766, we estimate that she was born 1745-1748. Obviously she cannot be the granddaughter of a man who was born nearly 30 years after she was.

So, I'm not saying it's impossible that Garner has some distant connection to Pocahontas; I'm just saying that she absolutely is not a direct descendant as it was shown in the article written by Henry Wells.
Maybe we could exchange a little info concerning the Cassitys. I'd love to see the tintype.
Also some people try to link Garner Ashby with the Randolph family, saying she was descended from Pocahantas by way of her mother "Female Randolph." I've spent some time trying to prove?disprove this. Any info? So far I am extremely skeptical.
