Hi, I am also researching the Casteel Line. I, too, trace back through Edmund Casteel II, but I am a descendant of his son Joseph. I have a problem: different trees I have seen have two almost identical persons at the level prior to Edmund II. One set has Edward DuChastel DeBlangerval (Capt) born in Flanders and married to Christian; and the other group has Edmund DuChastel, born in the Netherlands and married to Christian. One tree even has both of them married to Christian (presumably at different times) and children distributed between them. Birth dates of Edward/Edmund are either 1660 or 1668 and deaths are 25 May in either 1712 or 1713. Needless to say, I am confused by this. Are they the same person and differences exist in the details, or are there actually 2 families? If the latter, which one sired Edmund II?

Just started doing this, so I'm new to the genealogy thing. From what I can tell, I am related to him. My line goes like this: Edmund Casteel II, Zacariah Casteel, John Henry Casteel I, John Henry Casteel II, Mary Ann Casteel who married Nelson Martin. Nelson and Mary had Mary Martin, who married Thomas K. Pettiford. Thomas and Mary had Ella Bell Pettiford, who married Stephen Alpha Gray. Stephen and Ella had Thomas Audie Gray, who married Selma Oller. Thomas and Selma had Dolores Gray, who married Roy Lauderdale. Roy and Dolores had Cynthia Lauderdale, who married Robert Arthur and had me, Kimberlee Arthur Whatley. I hope I have gotten the lineage correct.

I am a descendent of Captain Chastel. My great grandmother was Hettie Casteel. I have the family history back to the Captain. Some questions I have are: 1. Why is there not a picure or painting of this man? Is it because he was a wanted man? 2. Did he commandeer the HMS Resolution and run it aground after taking loot from French and Spanish vessles? 3. By signing allegiance to America with William Penn as witness, did he perhaps give up some of his wealth to help the American Colonies? 4. Did not the King put out a warrant for his arrest, so was he not a traitor of England and a patriot for America? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Terry Moore

You need to join the Casteel Privateers Group and get a book on the Casteels newly published. You are out of the line of Capt. du Chastel who was from Flanders. If you have a Casteel to test with the Castle DNA Project that would verify your lineage to du Chastel.
John B Castell/Casteel of Washington DC

I am looking to confirm the parents of John B Castell who was born in Maryland and lived much of his life in Washington DC.

I have found different records spelling his name Castell, Casteel, and Castel, and Castil.

I know he was born between 1803 and 1807 in Maryland, according to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Washington DC censuses. His wife was Martha Hudson. On the marriage record his name is spelled Casteel.

I recently found a record here on Ancestry from Maryland Births and Christenings Index that says John Bradley Casteel was born on 15 Nov 1805 in Saint Johns Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland to Edmund Casteel and his wife Mary. He was baptized on 5 Jan 1806 in Saint Johns Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland.

I've found other information about an Edmund Casteel who had a wife Mary who died in Washington DC in 1831. I have not found solid information on who this Edmund's parents were but there seems to be some speculation that he was a descendant of Edmund du Chastel/Casteel.

Does anyone have any information connecting my John B Castell to the John Bradley Casteel born to Edmund and Mary Casteel? Or in connecting Edmund Casteel to the better known Edmund du Chastel?

The enumerator did make a mistake on the 1920 Census, showing Elizabeth as HIS mother.

Thanks to Cora Ward and Melissa Smith Simmons for all of their help!

Elizabeth Casteel (married name) bn. ~1839 Ky mystery woman!!

I really need help with THIS one!

The 1920 Census for Campbell Co.,TN (Civil District 5>District49>pg 7) shows an Elizabeth Casteel (line 25) as being 81 years old and a widow. She is listed as the mother to my GGrandfather James Ross. I know that his mother was Lucinda (unknown) and she was married to James W. Ross. No Casteel connection that I'm aware of.

Along with Ms. Casteel, are James' wife and children, including his son, Hiram Thomas Ross (bn ~1902). Hiram will prove to be a possible connection later in my story.

I have tried tracing this woman back through previous census records, but as you might imagine, there are plenty of `forks' which take me in different directions. Here is what I think is my best `path':

The previous Census (1910) -
Shown as Casleel
An Elizabeth Casteel is in Monroe Co., Ky (Martinsburg) > pg 9
She is born ~1837 and is widowed. Living with daughter Norry A (Nancy J as corrected by someone previously) bn ~1861. This wouldn't exactly match the age of Nancy J from the 1870 Census below, but we all know how inaccurate these can be. also listed is a Nephew, Capshaw Winford bn ~1892 Ky. they are next door to the London Casteel family and 2 doors down from the Mornan (wife listed as Head) Capshaw family.

The Previous Census (1900)-
An Elizabeth Casteel is in Laurel Co., Ky (Pittsburg Pct.) District 151> pg 20. She is born in Jul 1839 and is widowed. Shown as the Mother-in-Law to Head of household, Wiley Cole. Wiley's wife is Clerisa (Casteel?), bn ~Jul 1876 and married Wiley in 1892. There are two sons James M (bn Oct 1898) and William H (bn May 1893). There is also...a Hiram Casteel, listed as Wiley's Brother-in-Law (Clerisa's brother no doubt). He's shown to have been born in 1879, so he can't be the same Hiram that is shown as Hiram Thomas ROSS on the 1920 Census as mentioned previously. More on Hiram in a bit. :)

1880 Census- Rockcastle Ky./District 96>pg 6
Family is listed as Carteel

Elizabeth Casteel shown as the wife to James (he was bn ~1816 Ky.). Children include Granville S. (13), Mary A. (11), Margaret (8), Almirah (6) CLARA S (Clerisa??) (3), and Hiram T. (1)

1870 Census- Laurel Co., Ky./Kempers>5

Elizabeth Casteel bn 1839, wife of James (bn ~1816). Children include Nancy J. (15), Claborn W. (11), Eliza (6), Geanville (Granville?), (2), Mary A. (2). Family is living next door to Hellard family. Is Elizabeth's maiden name Hellard...maybe?

Now...Here's the `twist'!

I found what I believe to be the grave for Eliza (Cole) Casteel, in Roberts Cemetery. The Interment lists shows her as the daughter of James and Elizabeth (my mystery woman??).

Now...here's the weird part. There is also a...HIRAM THOMAS ROSS bn 01Sep1899 d. 22 Aug 1949 buried there too! He's could be MY Hiram T. Ross from the beginning of this story. My Hiram disappears after the 1930 Census for Anderson Co., TN. /District 10 (H. Thomas Ross). If he ended up in Roberts cemetery...I'd love to know how...and why.

Thanks for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

We are also researching Amos Casteel/Emily Clark, trying to tie them into John W. Casteel (1844-1941) married to a Cordelia Casteel (possible previous names Polk Wilhelm) We have the 1850 census index for Amos and Emily, then we found an 1860 census for emily married to Hiram Jocelyn, with John W. Casteel and a Mary Casteel listed within the same household (other Jocelyn members listed). There is another Casteel possibly Jammie also listed. We are not sure if we have the correct information to tie our John W to Amos and emily, so contact us and we can compare notes, any information will be greatly appreciated.

I don't have him in my direct line. However, there is still the possibility that he could be a cousin. My Casteel's have been difficult to find info on. On my line the name changed from Castile to Casteel. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. Let me know if there is anything else I might be able to help you with.
Have a great day!
Leslie

My great grandfather was John Daniel "Billy" Casteel and grandmother was Ruby Erwin. He was born in Kentucky around 1876. Are these Casteels related to your family?

Thanks.

y-DNA Match DOBSON-CASTEEL (Greenbrier line)

A 37-marker y-DNA from the line of Adam DOBSON born 1796 in PA has matched 36/37 to a descendant of John CASTEEL born 1814 KY and 34/36 to a descendant of James CASTEEL born 1816 KY, both sons of John CASTEEL of Greenbrier.

This Dobson line has been in PA for 6 generations since Adam Dobson, first in Schuylkill Co in the early 1800's, Jefferson Co in the remainder of the 1800's and in Butler Co in the 1900's.

These DNA results strongly suggest a common paternal ancestor in the 1600-1700 time period.

While there are several possible scenarios to explore, an interesting one is the union of an unmarried Casteel girl and a Dobson man, where the son of that union was raised as a CASTEEL. This son would have carried the maternal DNA of the Edmund du CHASTEL family and the y-DNA of the Dobson line.

If this Dobson man was of the Adam Dobson line, this scenario would explain both the 2 distinct CASTEEL lines present in the US, and the almost exact match of a relatively isolated Dobson line in central Pennsylvania with the Greenbrier Casteel. Should this be proven true then the 2 Casteel lines are related maternally, not paternally.

I am seeking CASTEEL researchers of the Greenbrier line to collaborate in the investigation of a Dobson-Casteel union in the 1700's and other possible scenarios.

Dennis Howard
Joseph Casteel b. c. 1800/1810 m. Elizabeth Eslinger 3 Jun 1829, Putnam Co., IN

I was wondering if there could be other children born to Joseph Casteel & Elizabeth Eslinger who married in 1829. It seems they started their family 7 years after their marriage, having 8 known children. It is possible Joseph is my gr gr gr grandfather, and I have been trying for years to reconcile the family members found living in Ephraim Duke and Jane (Eslinger) Duke's household. I know for fact one of these Casteel children, James M., is my gr gr grandfather. The others are his siblings.

I have been researching this family for 20+ years and any help you provide would be greatly appreciated. I also have a lot of information on this family that may be of interest.

Thank you,

Carolyn

carolyns-email@comcast.net
