I got quite a lot of CATER information from David MILSOM who has quite a large tree on RootsWeb and a Frederick CATER of Gloucestershire here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d... That page has a link to 4 Ancestry hints which may be relevant. He got his information from a Pam Brown.

Hello, Im searching for my gggrandmother named Lucienda Cater(1875) before she married my ggggrandfather William Robinson born 1869. They were both African Americans located in Anderson SC. I havent had much luck in findy any Caters in the Anderson area, cant even find her deat certificate. Any info you have will be helpful. Thanks.

Her sibs: Clyde, Rita, Harry & Stanley (1906)
Her parents: George Bernard Cater (born in England 1861) & Evelyna Jane Wand

Muriel died at age 45 in 1945.

Would love info on her sibs, parents or grandparents.

I am the ggggdaughter of Mary Ann Cater who is the older sister of John Smith Cater. I checked your thought on William being the same as the William Cater in Mississippi. I don't see how it is possible as there were only 3 children born from his first marriage to Emaline - Mary Ann, Wm. M, and John Smith Cater. Please take a look at my public tree and see if it helps you. It seems that we DO have a connection here!

My great grandmothers madien name was Lucienda Cater born 1845 in Anderson SC. She married William Robinson(1869) year in 1891. They both were children of slave. I have had alot of trouble finding Caters in Anderson SC, I was hoping you might have more info on some from around this area.

Who was the father of your William Cater, born abt. 1865 OH?
The only William Cater in my line was born 1857 in Belmont County, OH to George Cater born 1824, Maryland & Elizabeth Outland. His father was also George Cater born 1782 in MD.
I have a lot of information on the Cater's from Ohio, is your line from a George Cater or John Cater?

This would be interesting to have. My Cater family came from Berry Pomeroy Devon in 1640 to NH. After a few generations the name changed to DeCatur and Carter. We are currently trying to prove that our family came from Devon.

I'm asking because I also descend from William W. Cater B. 1806 and I haven't found a plausible and/or verifiable father for John Cater.

Besides his age at John's birth, my research has William Cater (b. 1688) as having died in 1749. So his death 27 years before John's birth would pretty much make it impossible for him to be John's father.

I think a William Cater was John's father, but not this William. William W. might be the grandfather or even possibly his great grandfather.

Hopefully someone can provide the missing information here.

This information was given to me at a Cater family reunion in Everett, WA in about 1995 or 1996. My cousin Earl who was a Minister and his family got all the information. It was in a booklet they handed out.

Jacob Cater of Steuben County NY

Trying to research a Jacob Cater who showed up in Hornell New York (Steuben County) in the 1850 and 1860 Census.

According to the 1855 New York State Census he was born in Dutchess County around in 1789 and had been living in Steuben Co. for 9 years.

I've run across conflicting sources, Some records the family name is DECATOR and others it is just CATER.

He was married to a Mary (surname unknown) and had 4 children:

Abram Cater

Eber Cater- born abt 1834 in Oneida Co. NY

Elizabeth Cater- born abt. 1839 in Seneca Co. NY and married an Ephraim ANDRUS and had one son Edward ANDRUS

Margaret Cater- born abt. 1842 in Onondaga CO. NY married Charles Norton and died in Springwater NY in 1897

James Cater- born abt 1844 in Seneca Co. NY. I believe he fought in the Civil War and survived it.

Any of this sound familiar with anyone?

Looking for information on Caters in Jamaica. My husband's grandmother, Alma Louise Cater, 03/25/01, had several siblings: Charles, Frank, Edward, and Vivian, who I think were born in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Alma went to Cuba where my husband's father was born, then returned to Jamaica and eventually came to Us. Anyone can help me on the upline? Hi, I'm also a Cater, and I have a Charles (?) Cater as a grandparent. His parents are unknown to me. He lived in Belmont, ohio, or near it, divorced his first wife, Dorcas Dew (cater), and seemingly disappeared (or remarried). He and Dorcas had three sons, Hollis, Clifford and Carleton. I would also know if your Charles may have been related.
