I know it has been many years since you posted this, but was wondering if you had ever gotten any info. I have in my research a Margaret Cather married to a William Howe. They were married in Vermillion, Indiana 6 April 1845. She is the daughter of Robert and Mary (Mosley) Cather. I don't have a whole lot of info on her, but I know that they ended up in St. Clair, Missouri and she died there in 1870. I am still looking for cemetery info and an obituary. hope you had good luck in your search.

Dah :-)
I have heard of Quincy before but I have never been there.
My mother emailed me and said that she beleives that your Cather line is a different line than ours. She has gone back as far as 1765 and doesn't have any ties to the information you have given me.

If for some reason I am going to or thru Quincy I will let you know.

Lisa Rossey

I forwarded that information to my mother to see if she can make any kind of connections. She has the software and everything and has been working on this for years and goes back pretty far..........
She lives in Western Pa., which is where I grew up but I live in Illinois now. Funny ha? Where in Illinois was your father from? I live in the south suburban area of Chicago. I don't know much about the ancestry except for what my mother has told me and like I said she has done alot of research and has gone back really far. Don't know how far just remember her telling me things. She hasn't quite reached as far back as when Christ was born, but she is getting there :-)
If I get any additional information I will let you know.
Thanks, Lisa

Lisa-
I would have to do some SEVERE digging to find the history line that my aunt - Melba Jean Cather (deceased approx,1994 - born if not mistaken July 15,1924) had uncovered.

She and my father (Roy Henry Cather- 4-13-1928--2-12-1997) were 2 chilren of Marie & Roy Cather - my paternal grandfather no middle name- born in Quincy, Illinois (my father and aunt) would presume Roy Cather would have been born 1894 roughly - he had left my grandmother and children when dad and aunt were little and returned after my father came "home" on leave from army -bought aunt who was in nursing school at time a car a took dad to a local bar ordered a beer and said "get the kid a pop". Needless to say my father did not have real great things to say about his father but I do recall him speaking highly of his grandparents, unfortunately I can not remember their names off hand. After service, dad located here in MD and met and married my mother having 2 children =self and older brother Warren Kurtz Cather- who has 3 daughters of his own, I have 2 boys and 1 girl, my daughter the only one to so far have the Cather name- Jillian Ashley Cather-Barth

Aunt Melba had traced the line all the way back, but never lived close, visited for short periods over yrs growing up, for most of my childhood she taught nursing at University of South Carolina , received her Doctorate in Nursing, and Tenior, and published medical books in the Medical/Nursing Field (another published Cather). Later, she and my grandmother moved to Fla. where she finished her teaching work, etc.. until first my grandmother Marie (nee.Fromme) Cather and then she passed. As far as my aunt = Melba Jean Cather - as young child grew up thinking she never married, until I found a wedding announcement in album in basement announcing Marriage of Melba Jean Cather to a (John Brown? -dont hold me to that its been too many yrs) when I asked about what I had found, I was told lasted about a yr and was annulled. My Aunt had converted to the Catholic Faith.

I do remember hearing alot about farmlands, being poor, "holy roller churches" etc.. in dad's days growing up in Illinois. But again, he is not a Jr., he was given the middle name of Henry but his father was only Roy Cather.

Hope that helps some- will try to find out more if mom can remember anything dad might have told her about his grandparents names (she's now 81-so her memory isn't always up to par) and I know packed away are alot of the original Willa works that Dad and Aunt Melba had collected so may be I might find something there. Your mention of Scotland/Ireland -- I do remember dad saying we are of the Welsh decent / Scottland which makes me wonder about Robert, although the name John also rings a bell- but again, Dad was born and raised in Illinois and did not move to MD until was out of service, my mother Jane E. Kurtz Cather was born and raised here.

Thanks again,
Carol L Cather

08-16-08
Our tree goes, Me (Lisa Ray Rossey, My mother Nancy Ray Kirkwood, Grandfather Harvey B Ray, William Byron Ray, William Cather Ray, 1843, Jemima Cather (Ray),1817 ,John Cather,1792, and Robert Cather 1765.
It appears, that John Cather, came to Pa after leaving MD, and was in the southern part of PA.

All born in PA, until John Cather 1792, wo was born in MD. and his father Robert Cather, possibly Scotland or Ireland.

As to Willa, 1873, Charles F. Cather 1848, William A Cather 1823, James Cather 1795, Jasper Cather 1739. Jasper married a Catherine Lawrence from Fayette County PA, but the Caspers were all born in Va. Jasper and Catherine, had, Mary 1775, John 1779, Thomas 1777, Jane 1773.
He then married Sara Moore, Hannah 1793, Sarah 1800, Mary 1806. Robert 1787, Wm 1789, David 1789, and James 1795,. Lastly he married Barbara Lawrence, and had Margaret 1781.

The time elements do not figure, so one has to assume that Jasper and one of his siblings, could be the father of our Robert(1765).

Hope this helps you and if you can give me any information would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Lisa
J.G. Cather of St. Louis, Missouri in 1883

J. G. Cather, St., Louis, face bruised and cut, not serious.

Cincinnati, Ohio, March 30, 1883

In the woods. a mile south of Mason, Ky., forty miles from Cincinnati, at 5:30 this morning, the northbound express passenger train met with a disastrous accident and its passengers suffered a rude and painful awakening. The train consisted of an engine, baggage, smoker, ladies’ car and two sleepers, one from Vicksburg and the other from Jacksonville. There is a sharp curve at this point and an embankment forty feet high. The train was going at full speed when the engineer felt a rail yield. He instantly applied the brakes and in an instant heard a frightful crash and saw his train, except the baggage car, hurled right and left down the embankment.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Catskill archives."
Re: Missing Data

Dear Liz::

Received your message and I hope tor hear from you again.

Joseph and Rachel Cathers of Helen, Clarion County, Penna. were my gggparents. Their son, Robert and Nancy Cathers of Winslow, Jefferson County, Penna.were my gggrandparents. Their son. William and Mary Cathers of Rathmel, Jefferson, Penna. were my ggrandparent, their daughter, Rachel Anna Cathers, was my grandmother. She married John Martin Wylam in Reynoldsville, Jefferson, Penna.

I beleive that Joseph and Rachel Cathers were the progenitors of the Cathers families in that part of Pennsylvania. I also beleive that they both were married in North Ireland and that they migrated to USA about 1760. I have no proof except for the family stories as told by my grandmother.

Another story that I picked up (at a later date) was that the original Cather(s) were one of the 49 line officers of Oliver Cromwell's Army during the invasion of North Ireland,. That one brother added the "s" to their name thus the surnames in North Ireland became Cather and Cathers. They came from Berkshire, England.

Would like to hear from you.

William A. Wylam

I am related to Rebecca Cathers, who is the daughter of Joseph and Rachel Blake Cathers. Rebecca married John Fuller. Her mom,
Rachel Cathers, was buried at the Fuller farm, Winslow, PA, January 16, 1844. She was 79 years old. I have a photo of her gravestone.
My records show that Rachel Blake Cathers' parents were Joseph Cathers and Rachel Smiley Blake.
Rachel Smiley Blake was the daughter of Joseph Blake and Rachel Smiley. I haven't been able to find much information on The Blakes or the Smiley's, or confirm this info. I received it from old family records.
Robert Cathers and Rebecca Cathers Fuller were quite close and his name appears on many genealogical items.

My grandfather was Clay Cather's older brother. His name was Henry Keirle Cather. He had a sister Alma May and a brother Thomas. Their father died in Augusta, Kansas where he died at the age of 36. I have been to the grave site where he is buried with his mother and baby son, Willie. All 3 died within a few months of each other. The wife, Helen Virginia Mallonne Cather returned to her parent's home in West Virginia to raise her four children. I have a good record of the family except for Uncle Clay's heirs.

I'd like to hear from you.

CATHER Deeds in California

I have posted a few deeds on the Santa Cruz County, California message board involving James CATHER. This CATHER line came from Tyrone County, Ireland about 1845. They first went to Michigan and in about 1857 came west to California.
The father, James, is reported as d. 1846 in Lampeer County, Michigan. (I am unable to verify the death and burial of him and could use some help with this information.) I believe the son, James, is probably the one involved in these deeds. There were 5 daughters, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, Mary Ann and Ellen. There were at least 2 sons, James and Thomas. A John is mentioned in the 1850 census in Lampeer County, but I am not sure this is not really James, although the birth years are off from other records.
Looking to share any information on the sone. The 5 daughters settled in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties (known as the Pajaro Valley).

Margaret Jean Cather

I am looking for the descendents of my Great Aunt Margaret. I know that at one time she lived in the S.F. area of Ca. I also know that she passed away in Hayward Ca. 27 Sept 1986. I have her as being married twice. So I am not sure if Cather was her first or last husbands name. Please reply here or email me.
John Shearer
San Diego, Ca.

Re: family tree

Just keeping everyone informed... the four girls that were born to Pauline Virgina Widak and William *Bill* Cather have been reunited after years of hard work. We are still missing one sibling that was born in between jan and feb of 1961. This female child was born by csection in detroit michigan and was flown to new york with my mother Pauline Widak and a nurse and brought to the adoptive family. This was a private adoption.

The Handley Library in Winchester VA is featuring the Willa Cathar history in September. Her family took in my orphaned grand mother and so I am very interested in your findings. She was taken in by an Aunt. So i am distantly related to the Cathers. Rosie
