Re: William Caudill, Colonel

My Great Great Grandmother was Sarah Jane Caudill, born 18 Sep 1854 - married William H. Holbrook on 14 Mar 1878. He died 7 Feb 1944. Both lived in Wilkes Co, NC; he was raised on Greenstreet Mt, Traphill Comm, Wilkes Co, NC. Sarah's mother was Jane Wood - born sometime in 1817. Her father was William Caudill - born June 2, 1815, died Mar 3, 1900,
Sarah Jane or her mother was supposed to be full-blooded Cherokee Indian. That's all the info I have about Jane Wood. If anyone knows anything else, please reply. Thanks.

Connection between Peter Franklin Caudle/Benjamin Caudle/Sampson Caudle

Sampson Caudle is supposed to be the father of Benjamin Caudle. Benjamin Caudle us supposed to be the father of Peter Franklin Caudle. Peter us supposed to be buried in an unmarked grave in the Danforth cemetery by Stafford, Missouri. A cousin of mine says that Peter was supposed to be a hard to control child. He was supposed to have left or been sent from home around the age of 4 or 5. Personally, I would have never sent my 4 or 5 year old child to live with someone else. This is hard for me to understand. Supposedly he went to live with a Jarvis Caudle. This census is listed below. Jarvis is supposed to be an Uncle of Peter. I have never found a census with Peter ever living with Benjamin. I do see a census of a child named Peter living with a Jarvis near Rolla, Missouri. I cannot make a connection between Jarvis and the Benjamin or Sampson. I find Benjamin and Sampson around Stockton, Missouri around the year 1953. Sampson owned land 1853 east of Stockton, Missouri. I was told that he homesteaded the land.

Sampson was supposed to have married a Cherokee Indian lady, Lis Hawks. She was supposed to have been the daughter of a Chief. As I suppose all stories go. This Indian lady was supposed to have cross the Mississippi on the Trial of Tears near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I suppose near the park named Trail of tears.

She was supposed to have had a turquoise bracelet. My grandmother spoke of this bracelet. I met a lady years later that spoke of the same bracelet. Supposedly Lis's daughter-in-law pusher down some stairs to take her bracelet. This push was supposed to have killed Lis.

In all the records that I have found about this Sampson Caudle, he moved to Stockton, Missouri near the year 1853. His wife was supposed to have been Elisabeth "Betsy" Ann Adams. I found their marriage record in the courthouse in Stockton, Missouri. I also found a Swingle lady married to a Sampson Caudle in the same court house. This group fo Caudle family have spelled the last name Cordel Caudill.

If anyone could help me with this mystery, I would really appreciate your help!

Venetia

Name: J Cordal
Age in 1860: 60
Birth Year: abt 1800
Birthplace: South Carolina
Home in 1860: Little Piney, Phelps, Missouri
Gender: Male
Post Office: Little Piney
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
J Cordal 60
R Cordal 45
M A Cordal 14
E Cordal 11
Jane Cordal 10
Peter Cordal 5

Kentucky Death Certificate at Ancestry.com lists Delilah as Dillia Caudell, d/o Delanie Gibson and Susie Combs, with Cordia Pennington being the informant. She died on 02 March, 1936 of lobar pneumonia. She is listed as married, with Jack Caudill being her husband. Burial was at Melvin, KY. She was 28 years old, according to that certificate, so b. about 1908. "Delie" Gibson had a daughter Juanita, b. in Letcher County on 16 Feb 1930. A sister, maybe?

No death certificate found for Jack. That might have been a nickname, but some people just don't have a death certificate on file.

I have a family history book. Issac Caudill is in it, but the one I have was married to a Julia(Judy) Slone. They had 11 children, Harve, Harden, Elizabeth, William, Preston, Sarah, Isom, Jarvey, Benjamin, Franklin, and Katheryn. He was a Confederate soldier. He was born 3/8/1846 and died around 12/13/1920? His mother and father were Abijah Caudill b. 1817 and Elizabeth Slone b. 1822.Hope this helps!

Mary Caudill (1755-1835) -- Wife of Thomas Joines

My family tree reasearch has run into a road block. I'm hoping someone out there can help me out.

Mary Caudill was the daughter of Benjamin Caudill (1730-1776). She married Thomas Joines (1750-1834).

The problem lies in the identification of Mary's mother. Various trees on Ancestry list different mothers. I have yet to pin down, via documentation, the true identity of Mary's mother (one of Benjamin's wifes).

It seems likely that Mary's mother was Mary Elizabeth Adams but I can't add her to my tree unless I definitively know that Elizabeth was actually Mary's mother.

Does anyone out there have any official documention on the true identity of Mary's mother ?
My great Grandmother is Laura (Parsons) Blevins. She comes from the Parsons who helped found Ash County, NC. She married Rily Blevins. Their house was at the confluence of Grassy Creek and the New River. My Mother was born in their home. The Caudills were also part of the original settlers in the region. I'm sure that my great grandmother and Sue Etta Parsons are related. I will look for the Caudills father in my searches and let you know when I find him.
Sincerely,

Russ Vollman.
(I am a direct relative of the Blevins, Parsons, Austins, and others in the Ash county area. My relatives founded the Ash County and later split it into two counties when Alleghany County was formed.)

I saw your post from 2003, I hope you are still on ancestry. You mention the name Paul Caudill from Hazel Park Michigan. I am from Hazel Park and we graduated in 1971 from Hazel Park High School with a Paul Caudill. Right now we are working on our 40th reunion and we are try to find all of our former classmates. At the time of our 10 year reunion in 1981, Paul Caudill lived in Troy on Parkton st. in 1991 for our 20th reunion they couldn't find him. Just wondering if you know where he is or what city we could look for him in. I did see that there was a Paul A. Caudill in Kentucky with a Michigan Social Security card, but that Paul Caudill would be a year younger than us. Anything you can help me with would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Patti

Re: Jeremiah Cordell/Caudill

Lenny,
My husband, Stephen Pruitt, is a grandson of Phoebe Caudill (we’ve emailed with you before about the Caudill Cabin and other topics) but this message caused me to wonder what you have learned from DNA testing thus far. I looked at the Caudill page on Family Tree DNA, but since “earliest known ancestor” is not displayed, I couldn’t tell which sample represents your (and his) Jeremiah Caudill line.

My husband Stephen also has Stephen Caudill (married Huldah Adams) in another branch of his tree, and Abner Caudill (married Jane Adams) in yet a different branch of his tree, both of which presumably go back to James Caudill (married Mary Yarbrough). I’m not certain of the paper trail for the other Caudill connections, but DNA doesn’t lie!

Have you written up any findings yet? Any help would be appreciated!
Debbie Hendren Pruitt
Parents' Birth and Death Dates in Family Trees

My biggest pet peeve in using family trees is incorrect birth and death dates for parents. Some people have the parents fathering or giving birth as 5 year-olds or, even worse, parents who were born and died after their "children", some by as many as several hundred years! So please do not include these people in your trees. Thanks.
