Caudle/Cordel/Caudel

Sampson Caudle is supposed to be the father of Benjamin Caudle. Benjamin Caudle us supposed to be the father of Peter Franklin Caudle. Peter us supposed to be buried in an unmarked grave in the Danforth cemetery by Stafford, Missouri. A cousin of mine says that Peter was supposed to be a hard to control child. He was supposed to have left or been sent from home around the age of 4 or 5. Personally, I would have never sent my 4 or 5 year old child to live with someone else. This is hard for me to understand. Supposedly he went to live with a Jarvis Caudle. This census is listed below. Jarvis is supposed to be an Uncle of Peter. I have never found a census with Peter ever living with Benjamin. I do see a census of a child named Peter living with a Jarvis near Rolla, Missouri. I cannot make a connection between Jarvis and the Benjamin or Sampson. I find Benjamin and Sampson around Stockton, Missouri around the year 1953. Sampson owned land 1853 east of Stockton, Missouri. I was told that he homesteaded the land.

Sampson was supposed to have married a Cherokee Indian lady, Lis Hawks. She was supposed to have been the daughter of a Chief. As I suppose all stories go. This Indian lady was supposed to have cross the Mississippi on the Trial of Tears near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I suppose near the park named Trail of tears.

She was supposed to have had a turquoise bracelet. My grandmother spoke of this bracelet. I met a lady years later that spoke of the same bracelet. Supposedly Lis's daughter-in-law pusher down some stairs to take her bracelet. This push was supposed to have killed Lis.

In all the records that I have found about this Sampson Caudle, he moved to Stockton, Missouri near the year 1853. His wife was supposed to have been Elisabeth "Betsy" Ann Adams. I found their marriage record in the courthouse in Stockton, Missouri. I also found a Swingle lady married to a Sampson Caudle in the same court house. This group fo Caudle family have spelled the last name Cordel Caudill.

If anyone could help me with this mystery, I would really appreciate your help!

Venetia

Name: J Cordal
Age in 1860: 60
Birth Year: abt 1800
Birthplace: South Carolina
Home in 1860: Little Piney, Phelps, Missouri
Gender: Male
Post Office: Little Piney
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members:
Name Age
J Cordal 60
R Cordal 45
M A Cordal 14
E Cordal 11
Jane Cordal 10
Peter Cordal 5

Susie A. Caudle, Alabama

Susie Caudle was my great great-grandmother. She was married to James Monroe Moody. They were the parents of my great grandfather, Otis Houston Moody (Abt 1920-1946). I have had no luck with her family because I can only go by census at the moment, and the names aren't always accurate.

So I need help of course.

I'm seeking any information on Caudle's in Alabama. I think that might help.

This is the only census I found with her in it.
First Name: Susie
Middle Name: A
Last Name: Caudle
Name Suffix:
Birth Date: 3 August 1890
Social Security Number: 421-46-6455
Place of Issuance: Alabama
Last Residence: Athens, Limestone, Alabama
Zip Code of Last Residence: 35611
Death Date: 16 February 1995
Estimated Age at Death: 105

Thanks,
Laura Williams
Came across this at rootsweb.com

Name: Francis Sweet
Sex: M
Birth: 1808 in Burlington, Otsego, New York, USA
Death: BET 1878 AND 1903

Father: Jonathan Sweet b: 29 APR 1761 in West Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island, USA
Mother: Temperance Holdredge b: 12 MAR 1768 in Hancock, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA

Marriage 1 Anna Caudell b: BET 1806 AND 1858

Married: 1876 in Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri, USA

-- from http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

Just a note -- the marriage date above seems to be rather inaccurate, it would have Francis Sweet marrying Anna Caudell after she had been dead for about 18 years.

Scott

There is also another Stephen Caudill (sometimes referred to as Caudle) that was not born in Scotland, but rather in South Carolina. I've seen several different family trees on this site use them interchangeably which can greatly alter the lineage. If my father in law hadn't known the names of his great, great, great grandfather and uncles we could have mistakenly placed ourselves in the Caudill of Scotland line instead.

1900 census lists his wife as Lucy M b. 10-1867 in Mo. 1910 census lists her as Partsena b. 1852 in Ky. 1925 and 1930 census lists her as Lulu A. born about 1872 in Ohio. US marriage records indicate he was married to Lucille Bennett in 1890. Can anyone shed some light on any of these women? Thanks, Lisa

Grandma Roxie told me her daddy was hanged for something. I'm not sure but I think it was for helping a black man but I really don't remember. My sister knows more as she sent more time there. I went with my father often on weekends to see Roxie but I was a bit scared as I was shy. I saw my grandma more than you probably think. I was a kid and once grown up I jointed the Army.
My father, Charles Sr, took great care of his mother for decades. He took care of her yard and home, he took her medicine and groceries, and he visited often. It seemed more work than fun to me as I was a little boy. My dad worked a lot when I was young but I remember him going to visit her and help her nearly every week.
There seems to be some animosity to-wards us and I'm sure with some reason. I'm hear for one reason and that's to learn as much factual information as possible. I have some stories but I'd like to find written documentation if possible. Its hard to get the real story sometimes because it seems everyone's story is a bit different. Memories... interpretations are often different.

My dad knows Roxie was Indian and his dad was a first generation US citizen. He doesn't talk much about their early lives and I don't think he knows Sam's life before he married Roxie. I'm told he had a previous marriage and family.
I have a Keathely family history that was went to my father many years ago.

If you want to know anything about your grandmother Roxie Inez Chambless Caudle, there is a sign on the gate at Heffington Cemetery (our family cemetery) in Enola. They will know about her side of the family since their ancestors donated the land. Her father was Frank Chambless, an Indian. I think her Mothers name was Maggie Keathley, also part Indian. I think her Grandmothers name was White. Maybe Margaret. Roxie was Cherokee, Delaware and Blackfoot. You're great Uncle Walter Keathley made a death bed confession that he and others murdered Frank Chambless and weighed his body down in a stream.
Baia Chambless

I realize your father Charles didn't want anything to do with his family but when you grew up how did that stop you from talking to them? Our grandmother Roxie lived to be 92 or 93 and only died 8 years ago. Why didn't you ask her these things then while you had the chance? Even your Aunt Imogene probably knew some thngs to go on. But all our elders are dead now.
Our Uncle Howard told me when I was a little girl that Daddy (Sam) was Neufman. I don't know if that's spelled right and I never could find out anything about it. But neverless, since Samuel was "first born" in America, your research on his parents must be in France. I don't know of anyway to get their names except through your own fathers birth certificate which will show Sam's place of birth in Virginia. Then you can get a copy of Sam's birth certificate which should show his parents names and birthplaces. If you find anything please let me know.
Baia Chambless
P.O.
Yes I have heard of this book. I have seen postings from people who have read the book and I have contacted almost every single one, and the responses I have received were no help. So either our Caudle family was not in that book or I just haven't found someone who is linked to this family. It sure would be helpful if there werent so many spelling variations on the Caudle name. I think I have seen about 4 or 5 different ways of spelling. haha.. I will try the library, i havent thought of that. That book is very very expensive. I too cannot afford it at this time. Although I bet it would be so helpful if our Caudle family was in there.

Here is information on Francis Sweet and Ann Caudle that I have. Even as I am typing this I am trying to think of where ransom would fit in. Im not sure if it would be possible if Ransom was a descendant of ANN CAUDLE as her children all have the surname of SWEET. Unless that is of course one of her kids married a CAUDLE. I wonder what year Ransom Caudle was born.

Francis Sweet 1808 – 1876
(Ann Caudle 1814-1898)
They married May 9, 1833 in Morgan County Illinois.

CHILDREN:
Courtes Sweet
1836 –

Leonidas Sweet
1840 – 1880

Mary E Sweet
1840 –

Parley Sweet
1843 – 1899

Elizabeth Sweet
1845 –

Melissa Sweet
1847 –

Robert A.
Hi Robin,

Back then there were no birth certificates or death certificates. The only records normally kept were in family Bibles or family records or in church baptisms/christenings.

Depending upon where they were when they got married, there may or may not be county or state records on the marriage. There may not even be church records, because some parts of the country were settled far in advance of church and pastor or priest, which was one of the reason for Common Law marriage laws being enacted (and people today think living together without being married is a modern thing in this country).

If you can give me any more information on this Francis Sweet and Ann Caudle, such as children, descendants and so on, I can look around some to see what I can come up with.

As regards Ransom Caudle, you can pop up a few tidbits by searching on variations of the name, such as

Ransum Caudle
Ransum Caudil
Ransom Caudil
Ransom Caudill

and also using common variations of the Caudle name, such as

Caddle
Cuddle
Caddle
Cordle

Also search on common misspellings, such as

Cuadle
Cuadil
Candle

And so on.

There is not much out there on Ransom Caudle, I gave you all I had.

This DEFINATELY sounds like it ties in with our Ransom Caudle. The only information I have on him is that he lived in ILLINOIS and Married a WARD.. I didnt even know her first name. And as far as him being ANN CAUDLE father that was only a guess. Im not even sure that he is her father because she was born in 1814 either in ILLINOIS or NEW YORK. Ann Caudle married a man by the name of FRANCIS SWEET. And I know Ransom married his WARD wife in kentucky in 1810. It seems like you have more info than I do. =) I have to tell you I am truly excited that you responded to my post with this information. Please take my email address depmodegurl@gmail.com
It would be interesting to see where we lay on the Caudle tree. Maybe we are related. I have a GREAT AUNT her name is ALICE and she has been helping me with our ancestry and we have both been wanting to find info on the Caudles as it has been difficult. Here is her email address as well as she has more info than I do also.. amandfm23@yahoo.com I am wondering if maybe some details we may have might not be correct. I am going to try and get marriage certs and birth certs and also death certs. I am unsure if ANN CAUDLE's first name is really ANN because the only information I have on her is her marriage to FRANCIS SWEET and that she was born in 1814.. so maybe she was a grandmother or great grandmother to Ransom Caudle? Thank you so much for responding to me. This is so exciting.
My name is ROBIN by the way.

What I have is an ancestor by the name of John Lewis Caudle, b. 11 Mar 1823 in St. Clare County, Illinois, according to the best information that I have on that.

There were a few Caudles that were in Illinois at the same time, but only one was in St. Clare County in 1820, and that was Ransom Caudle. I don't know when he arrived there. My John Caudle is the only Caudle that I have been able to find born in St. Clare County, Illinois.

Curiously, Ransum Caudil married Susanna Ward in Kentucky, and the 1920 census for the only surviving son of John Lewis Caudle has John Lewis Caudle being born in Kentucky instead of Illinois, and I now wonder if perhaps they got John L. Caudle mixed up with John's father.

My John L. Caudle had, among other children, twin daughters both with the middle name of Ann.

My John Caudle also had black hair and dark skin.

Does any of this sound like it might tie in with your Ransom Caudle?
Caudle Help

My great grandmother was Elsie Caudle, she married Fred Scott. Her parents were James Joshua and Victoria Alice Caudle. I'm finding a lot of Amos and Moses Caudles and I'm having problems telling them apart, as well as their children. Any help on the family would be great. Her parents and a few siblings are buried at Vale United Methodist Cemetery in Fairfax Co Virginia.

Annie Mae Caudle Dillinger, DOB 1903

I am looking for information about Annie Mae Caudle, who lived in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, North Carolina. She married William Halcomb Dillinger. I am looking for date of death, date of marriage, residences.

I am also trying to find information about her daughter, Mary Naomi Dillinger (Contomarinos). (DOB 9/12/1931 - 4/8/2006)She worked as a waitress in North Carolina as a young woman, and met Peter Evers when he was discharged from the marines in North Carolina. They had 5 or 6 children together, but never married. At some point they moved to Long Island, New York. I would like to know residences, occupations, when they lived together, where she moved from New York. (she lived in Florida and died at her daughter's in North Carolina)

Thank you. I am new at genealogy and appreciate any help.
