Also doing research into the Robert H. J. Wardlaw and Artemesa Cauley family. I've just moved to Alabama and want to begin to search Chambers Co. records firsthand. Robert and Artemesa are my GGGgrandparents.

I have seen their graves; located in Cleveland co., AR ( this county was once Dorsey Co.) Bradley Co. is a neighboring one, but at one point, I think it was part of the same thing.

Their daughter, Minerva married John Dabney Treadwell and their daughter, Priscilla Eugenia Treadwell married Robert L. Brown and they, in turn gave birth to Lutie Brown, my grandmother.

Would love to keep correspondence going about them.

Thank you for your answer. I do have the census information and use Ancestry.com. The 1850 and 1860 censuses indicate their first two daughters were born in Georgia, so they were probably married in Georgia. I have not been able to prove the Indian connection. Rootsweb has a message posted July 11, 2000 Cauley Indian Heritage. I have not been able to connect this family to Artemece.
Martha

I think you can find useful information under Robert Hilliard J. Wardlaw who she married. They had about 13 or more children. Moved from Alabama to Arkansas and lived on a farm in the Rison, AR area, think they county was called Bradley at that time. Called Cleveland County now. They are buried in a cemetery also in that area.

The U.S. Census for 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880,1890 may tell you their county and children living with them at the time of the census. If you have the web site for Ancestry.com, some information is there.

I have heard that Artemesa Cauley Wardlaw was Indian but have not been able to verify the information. My understanding is that she and Robert H married in Alabama but cannot locate a record verifying it.

Their son Robert Miller Wardlaw (10th child) married Mandy Caroline Reed who I have been told was part Indian also. My search has not turned up an details to that effect.

Hope this helps fill in some blanks.

Re: Artemece Cauley GA AL AR

Martha,
I am also looking for Artemece/Artemesia Cauley. I don't have anything positive but am looking at Benjamin Cauley and Winnifred Taylor as her parents. As far as I can tell, there are only seven known children of this family and in the 1830 Covington, AL census they had 9 children. I am thinking Artemece may be one of these. Benjamin & Winnifred are from NC. They came to AL through Milledgeville, GA. Benjamin has quite a prominent person in Covinton Co. GA.
In 1850, he and Willnifred are still in Covington, GA and he died in 1859 at Camden, Ouchita Co., AR. So that means he left Al to AR sometime after 1850.(about the same time Robert H J Wardlaw and Artemece left Chambers Co., AL and came to AR.
Benjamin Cauley's parents were Roger Roderick Cauley and Mary Dove. It is thought but not proven that Mary Dove was Cherokee Indian.
Please e-mail me so we can discuss more.
Caroltn McKinzie

I just recently found out that Sarah Ann was born in SC.
I found her name listed in the death registry in the probate office. She died in 1915 in Wilcox Co., AL.
It had her mother listed as Molly McCauly and her father Wiley McCauly. For some reason she must have dropped the Mc off of the name. I have also found it spelled as Corley.
She was married to Alex McMurphy. I assume he was from SC also. If you have any other info I would appreciate.
They must have moved to Alabama when she was young. Also
need to found out who other siblings were.

Thanks, Pat

In 1812 Micajah Cadwell was in Laurens Cty when he place a legal notice cautioning anyone doing business with his wife Priscilla, as she had left his bed and board. In the Burch books by Marilu Burch, Allen Cadwell was father to Priscilla, Rebecca and Margaret with their mother being a Cauley who had a sister, Nancy Cauley, that married Lewis Hall.. Rebecca Cadwell Wright named one of her sons Micajah and a dau Priscilla.
Could this Priscilla, wife of Micajah, be the Cauley that was mother to Priscilla (Wright), Rebecca (Burch) and Margaret?
Could this Micajah be Micajah Allen Cadwell?

I find a Micajah Cadwell age 75 on the 1850 Ala census:
1850 Conecuh Ala
755 Micajah Cadwell, 75 NC
Mary A 44 SC
Mary A (13 or 18) Ga
Nancy A 10 Ala
Martha A 6 Ala
Jeps?? 3 male, Ala
Micajah Turner 13 Ala

Bernice
